Laver Cup 2021 Official Thread

Maybe it's because I'm an American but I've always considered Russia part of Europe. But for competitive balance of this current era they should definitely consider it.

Considering this basically like an All-Star game for tennis, they really shouldn't be having the likes of Opelka and Schwartzman having to match up with Top 5 players.
If Fed wants to host the Laver Cup in North America again, something needs to change. People aren’t going to continue to buy tickets to see the home team get blown out.

and he chose Kyrgios willingly over say someone like Harris?
Nick was a bad choice but I don't blame him for going to the well once again and seeing if the guy could still summon something for today. Nick has a history of actually taking LC seriously. And let's be honest, this is still an exo and Nick puts on a show.
I would have made the call to add Harris, but that said...the World Team with that one adjustment, the only one that makes any sense at all, would result in how many more wins??

People want to see top tennis, especially if they keep hosting it in cities without big tournaments.

Americans get their butt's kicked while the Europeans have been sweeping up US Open, Indian Wells, Miami and Cincinnati wins for 15 years now. Hasn't caused any downswing in ticket sales.

Team competitions are different though. And I don’t think there are many Americans tennis fans who dislike Med or Rublev cuz they’re Russian. Med certainly won over the US Open crowd in 2019.

Looking at the "World" ATP rankings. It's so barren, lmao.

62Federico CoriaArgentina

That's their top 20. Korda might have high upside. Harris has decent upside. There's not a lot of talent coming up through. though.

Not exactly traditional doubles but exciting 1st set. All these guys volleys stink so they are deathly afraid of cutting off balls in the middle with their volleys... so they are just letting all the balls go right thru in the Middle.............LOL :-D :-D

Rublev has some solid skills at net. I thought he was hopeless at net. I think rublev can reach the next level if he develops a transition game where he actively comes up to the net to volley away weak replies. It seems like he has the tools for it.

11-1, up to 13, a day to go. What a joke. So disappointing. This going to be so anticlimactic for the winners.
The blame is totally on the US of the A, the most relevant part of the non-Europe world. I remember the time when Sampras and Agassi were there for US/us.

Not only that, John McEnroe said if he lost this year, it would likely be his last. How many North and South Americans will ever want to play after this? It was embarrassing and sad for the players who took time out to do this.

Finnish have finally conquered the Americas.

Maybe they can turn it into something like a fantasy sports draft where two captains have a certain amount of "money" to build their team.

Not sure if Sock was considered or available, but he's the best doubles player in "the world" right now, I'd take him over Nick every time.

Smart move to have Rubles play with Tsitsipas. Picking two from the Medvedev/Tsitsipas/Zverev group seems like it could cause some conflict.

He was in the pictures at the event, so he was in Boston at the time. Not sure if he still had any lingering issues with the problem that made him pull out of the USO. I was hoping they would sub in, too, even in the Zverev match.

I can understand his frustration, for sure, and I never thought it was a good idea to copy golf in splitting up the teams....However, there is also a selection problem with the lineup. Why pit Kyrgios to play Tsitsipas? Why have FAA play Berrettin?

Anyways, could you imaging how all of these Laver Cups would be different if Delpo was still in action? Or Chung? And where's De Minaur? Not sure if it would be quite as one-sided. Which non-European will stand up to pick up the mantle?

He looks like he’s not letting go of the HC mantle any time soon. I honestly don’t think he will lose to anyone in a HC Slam unless he has a poor serving day.
Let's NOT get crazy here. Novak is a STRONG favorite on every HC slam over Med. Novak lost UsOpen because of CYGS pressure and tiredness.
If he is fresh there would hardly be a contest.
Also Theim could beat Med, as the Austrian thrashed Med in STRAIGHT SETS in UsOpen 2020.

He's definitely not going to be a strong favourite over Med at the USO, if favoured at all. By the time the next one rolls around Novak will be well past 35 while Med is only coming into his prime.

He is definitely on the bench cheering and stirring up the crowd. During the Isner/Kyrgios match some people started chanting “we want Jack Sock”

Well he did just win the Gold in mixed doubles iirc

The format definitely needs looking at.

The Ryder Cup itself changed from being UK v USA when that format became uncompetitive.

On the other hand, I guess it makes it unlikely the results are fixed as I don't think this is the way you would fix them.

Med's 120-130mph 2nd serves are by far the most interesting part of his game.

Such a weird dichotomy of one of the slowest defensive pushers on tour also being one of the biggest risk takers. It's like he only wants the point over in 1 shot or 20. No in between.
If he didn't blast serves his matches would be insanely attritional, which would be even more fun, though he'd be about the ninth best player. Slightly better than Ruud.

You sure about countries like Georgia and Kazakhstan being Team World? If so, I'd like to see Bublik get a chance next year. I think he would thrive in a team atmosphere.
