Laver Cup 2021

Interesting weekend as the Laver Cup goes up against the Ryder Cup. I am in the tennis business but I know that all my attention will be on the Ryder Cup, it is legitimate golf with real passion and the Laver Cup is pretty much professional wrestling. I will give you a heads up the Laver Cup will come down to probably the last match on Sunday ;).

Not to defend the Laver Cup which I absolutely hate, but previous results have been so different from what you say that it suggests that the tennis is actually honest, contrary to everything else the Laver Cup offers.

On the last edition, the most waited match, programmed to be the last match, didn't even happen, because the event was won the previous match by Zverev.
 
Who cares about this arbitrary quasi-exo "tournament"? It's a complete and utter joke.

The Ryder Cup is happening this weekend. Now that's a genuine and historic transcontinental sporting tussle.

What are you talking about ??? 2017 the last match between Fed and Nick clinched it after the miracle of miracles happens, Isner "beats" Nadal. 2019 Zverev beats Raonic in a super to clinch in the last match. Ok I will grant you 2018 which made it all the way to the second to last match.
Don't forget they have concocted this wacky scoring system to make sure one team doesn't get blown out. In the Ryder Cup you have had blowouts because it's legit, the Laver Cup is made for tv, like wrestling.

Berrettini v Felix looks like the most interesting match-up.

Shame we're not going to get Med and Tsits playing Doubles but maybe they're keeping that for later!
 
The only reason there’s hate for LC is because Fed was involved with it’s creation. If it came from the ATP or ITF or Djoker or Nadal were it’s inspiration it would be hailed as this great tennis innovation. I wish people would stop comparing it to the Ryder Cup. The Ryder Cup has been around for decades. Of course it’s going to have more prestige.

I could care less who created it. The players **** and moan about the schedule being to long and yet they show up for this unnecessary money grab towards the end of the season.
As I said before, the Ryder Cup is real golf, this is made for tv. Also, guess who made the comparison first to the Ryder Cup, the people involved in the creation of this disaster.

Berretini is a great guy. Try if you can to chat to him if you see him around. He is super funny and laid back. My favourite player currently.

And the Ryder Cup isn’t the same thing? Just because it’s been around for a lot longer doesn’t mean it too isn’t all about money.

Oh my god! Please excuse yourself from this conversation. Are you comparing the Ryder Cup to Laver Cup??
Just as a little FYI the players don’t receive the prize money at the Ryder Cup, it’s divided up and given to the players charities of choice.
 
All I know is that the Laver Cup is in my home town and it's an opportunity to see several of my favorite players. I only will be at it tomorrow so whoever plays tomorrow I will get to see play but I will get to see all the team players rooting for their teammates. Do I wish it was the French Open or the US Open or Indian Wells? Of course but they aren't in my home town! I regard this as a fun event and nothing to take all that seriously. I will be going tomorrow and my seat is pretty good, I will have a good view in the middle (facing the side of the net) so I am good to go!!!!
 
Kyrgios and Sock are stealing livings. John McEnroe is a criminal for continuing to call them up over players like Seb Korda, Christian Garin, Yoshi Nishioka, etc..
 
Why is Jack Sock only an alternate? Guessing it's to do with his low ranking. Sock/Kyrgios is actually a very high quality doubles team and team world need all the wins it could get in doubles.

This is an exhibition after all. Those guys have flashy skills and are good at doubles, plus they play a crowd-pleasing style with their personality.

No one and I mean no one wants to watch Christian Garin. Not even his mother. lol

Korda I think is a bit too young for it but will likely be a mainstay once he gets into the top 20 or so
 
I wonder what an Isner and Opelka doubles team would look like. It would literally be a wall at the front of the net.

We get this every year - the threads become full of people telling us how much they're not interested in a tournament they can't stop going on about.
 
Have fun! If I lad Laver Cup in my home town I'd over the moon! Seeing the games, all of the players, their interaction. It's amazing. Btw, I went to a GS finale traveled for it and honestly it wasn't that great. I'd never take it back but sometimes you get one-sided finale and you can't just go home.
View is really important so I wish I were you!
 
The only way for team world to pull an upset imo:


-Get lucky in a few singles matches

-Cannot lose in doubles. Team world actually have a very solid doubles team to choose from with a lot of chemistry. I don't know why Mac picked shapo for doubles though when he has nick and sock


Also fwiw I have a courtside tix for Sunday that I likely won't be able to make it to. Lmk if any TWers here interested
 
I prefer seeing the old legends (retired for how many years) than the new stars somehow. I know I know but without the Big 2 there is less spark.
 
Tell me the hard truths. To be honest players seem to not be interested. Our commentators didn't help while narrating the previous game lol.

This just isn't true.

It's the arbitrary and inorganic nature of the LC which most people object to.

Men's tennis has been dominated by Europeans throughout most of its history - and especially in the last couple of decades.

Nobody is authentically passionate about representing a "rest of the world" team.
 
I'm not trolling. Could someone tell me who came up with the idea that Europe is not part of the world? there should be a switch up europe would win easily and they used to have fed nadal and novak.

I don’t think they mentioned him during the opening ceremony either. Maybe that’s how he wanted it. I wonder how many ticket holders even know he’s there?

WRONG, except for the caveat at the end "last couple of decades," which hardly constitutes "throughout most of tennis history." Tennis from the 1930's to the 1970's was dominated by Australia and the US. No debating the point, just check the winners of the slams in those 50 years and should be well known to anyone who follows tennis history.

For a reference point, here are the men's winners at Wimbledon from 1930 until Borg came along in 1976. In 38 years, a European won Wimbledon 6 times. An Aussie or a Yank won it 32 times.

All of you talking negative about Laver Cup should be here. The atmosphere is awesome. Love the court and love the lighting. My friend is American so she’s rooting for Team World and I’m Scottish so it’s Team Europe for me. We are both hoarse after Felix and Matteo. What a match. These guys are taking this seriously, I can tell you that.
