Asked if it should be considered an exhibition, Nadal said: “No, is not an exhibition at all. No, no, I don’t think, no, guys? No, we are here to try our best, no? I wake up today since 4:00 in the morning to practice. An exhibition match, I don’t practice before an exhibition match normally, no. We are here to try our best. We are here to try to win. Not at all like a friendly match, no? We are here to really play with passion and to play for our continent, no?"

It's partly owned by Federer's management agency, what do you expect him to say?

Definitely its now a team competition like davis cup than exhibition.
They do some celebrity doubles usually on the first day. But after that its all business

Are your normal in the head? No points, no prize pool....and it's not an exo? Lol
Sounds like Wimbledon 22, Olympics, and Davis Cup. I guess all exhibitions, right? And what's this you say about no prize pool? Winning team gets $250K each team member.

Not to mention, Asked if it should be considered an exhibition, Nadal said: “No, is not an exhibition at all. No, no, I don’t think, no, guys? No, we are here to try our best, no? I guess Nadal is not normal in the head, right?

Uh oh. Team World screwed next year unless they leave Denis and Felix out.

Am I reading that right? You want Felix and Shap to be left out of a team competition taking place in Canada?

And in their place who? Schwartzman, De Minaur and Paul were on the roster so I don't see how Felix drops and Shap considering the home crowd will almost certainly be there.

I think it will be:

Felix
Shap
Kyrgios (unless he declines)
Tiafoe
Fritz

Guaranteed, then Paul, Cressy, Opelka, De Minaur, Cerundolo, Baez whoever is doing best for round out.

Unfriendly reminder that it's not. Even the players say it's not. No more an exhibition than 2022 wimbledon, the olympics, or davis cup.

Genuinely can’t tell if you are joking.

Divorced of ranking points, all of the tournaments you named have historical prestige and are governed with the sole intention of competitive play.

The Laver Cup - which I enjoyed, btw - manipulates the game mechanics and scoring system for the purposes of spectacle and showmanship. It’s not a serious competition and that’s okay.

It was a joke based around the two of them tending to be nut garglingly bad in front of their home crowd. I think they each have one good run there, and otherwise barely win matches :-D but yes, I'm sure they'll both be there if healthy. They might even roll the corpse of Milos out to sit there as an alternate.

Don't just give up on him. Tough year overall but he is young. have patience. He will bounce back. I believe he will.
I’m just so disappointed as a fan. It’s very frustrating to watch him mentally regress and lose to mugs like Rune, Galan and then lose every single close match. I’m also kinda mad at him for ruining Fed’s farewell. I know it’s not entirely his fault, but man just can’t step up. Super frustrating.

Pospisil is quite active playing qualifiers and of course got a WC entry to Montreal this year. He's from BC (not Vancouver but in the area) and just recently made Semifinal at the Vancouver Challenger. So despite Raonic's wider appeal he has the obvious downsides of not playing in Canada for over 4 years by next LC (even if he plays Canadian Open), he had a pretty damn solid run at Cincy in 2020 losing the final in 3 sets to Novak and if he gets to that form he's a shoe in but otherwise he'd be a liability. Pospisil has his issues but is a stellar doubles player despite focusing more on singles in recent years he did play well with Shap at the 2019 Davis Cup.

So what I'm saying is Canada have two options for a 3rd player to be in the alternate wing if it's not a hindrance. I mean frankly Jack Sock hadn't been playing much either recently but made the team and played played well, Pospisil plays quite well in team competitions likewise.

The players say otherwise. LC is only 5 years old. You expect it to have the same historical prestige as the slams? It is a team tournament. Yes, it is also aware of its own entertainment value but so is pretty much every other tournament. That's why almost all tournaments arrange and manipulate the draws to make it more entertaining. Who wants to see the #1 and #3 seeds meet in the first round of Wimbledon? They manipulate the draws for the purposes of spectacle, showmanship, and entertainment as much as for competition.

This is a team tournament with some players being invited and others earning their way in through their rankings. Not all who qualify or are invited will play but that's the same with every other tournament.

So listening to Roger, he doesn’t seem he will be the Euro captain as I and others hoped or thought for LC Vancouver ‘23. But he did say he will be there, at least.

Sad to say its the truth. Neither of the British players contributed any points for the team. Murray fought hard as usual and kept things close but the fact remains is that he's just not able to close out matches these days (or only now and again). Norrie was no better. Unfortunate as this was the maiden appearance at the Laver Cup for both but it doesn't seem likely that either will be invited back (unless Team Europe gets desperate for people to play). Murray may be out of the game by this time next year anyway. :(

Anyone know what's the player fees and appearance fees for the players at lc? Federer owns the event, and the big 2 probably get paid a ton, with others further down the totem pole.

Finally a competitive Laver Cup. It's what we've been waiting for. Way more fun than an event in which the outcome is decided before they even step on the court. Maybe they knew that, but I like to think all the players tried.

If Laver Cup was invented when Sampras, Agassi, Guga were dominating, would have it been team America vs team World ?

Ryder Cup been around a while so it's possible that would have been copies but there were plenty European players of note during that era. You've actually picked late 90s I guess? Then gotta think of exactly when because things changed around quickly. Kafelnikov, Ivanisevic, Pioline, Moya, Corretja, Enqvist if 99. If in 01 you have Safin, Norman thrown in, maybe Clement.

Point is how the competition would be run if it was still the same with points distribution. As it is you really need a good doubles team and 3 trusted players. So Team Europe could always manage that. 1993 would have been pretty epic Sampras-Agassi-Courier-Chang-Gilbert? against Edberg-Ivanisevic-Becker-Stich-Lendl?

In hindsight why did Europe not use Ruud more? One of the most in form players he should have played on day 2 and earlier on day 3 instead of Tsitsipas.

I think this was probably based on the assumption that Novak would win.

In this situation Tsitsipas would have been playing with less pressure and Ruud would have been playing the high-pressure must win game.

Because Novak lost the job fell on Tsitsipas who crumbled, as we saw.

Putting Novak on last match would have meant taking the risk that one of Ruud or Tsitsi would lose before Novak got to play (assuming the doubles is lost).

I can see how it happened.

Ruud is the highest ranking player on Team Europe.

So it makes sense that he was schedule to play last as their anchor.

So assuming he and Djokovic are the clear best 2 right now, it makes sense to put one early -- and one late.

Here’s some salt to rub in the wounds of the namby pamby crew crying foul at Sockafoe high heat: if they had tanked that STB the whole dynamic of Day 3 changes; Tiafoe could not have clinched by defeating Tsitsipas and it would have opened the door for Ruud to beat Fritz FTW.

Thankfully tennis still isn’t scripted like it’s entertainment instead of competition.
