If the Laver Cup is indeed an exhibition then it's the most serious and epic exhibition that I have ever witnessed!! I was lucky enough to attend the day session today and will be attending the day session tomorrow. I must say that this event can't be put into words at all! It's the best thing that has happened to tennis since I don't know when! Now whether it will last or not after the greats have retired remains to be seen, but as of now it's incredible!! Nobody and I mean nobody is treating this like an exhibition!! These guys are competing and playing like it's Wimbledon out there!! I will tell you this, and that is that Federer's performance today was the best performance since the Australian Open this year!! He played incredibly well!! I can say for sure now that the match against Millman was truly a fluke put down to Roger becoming ill in the heat and humidity. The first time that's ever happened to him!! Look for him to play very well in Shanghai, Basel and the Masters Cup!!

Glad you enjoyed the play. It was far too expensive for my tastes. Is it really legit when the 3rd "set" is a tie break?

I think it's here to stay for a long time. Players and crowds enjoy it and some good tennis being played. let's just hope team World will make it competitive.

It will be here for as long as they throw money at it. The prestige will wear off, there won't always be the best players playing and there won't always be legends captaining.

When that happens with its position in the calendar Davis cup and the race will take over priority.

Mac gets "angry" and Fed is smiling. That tells you everything you need to know.
Pretty much yes but if it was an exhibition surely Federer would have given Kyrgios that point off the unreturned serve? I think the matches are competitive but the atmosphere more relaxed than regular matches. In a more important match Djokovic would probably have smashed his racquet to pieces after that double fault on set point.

After Jmac’s tired and stale performance with the Umpire during Fed-Nick, Nick confused about what is real and what isn’t actually acted like a jerk toward the Umpire.

There is no prize money (I think?) or points, so it is an exhibition.

Doesn't mean the level of play can't reach or even exceed that which you see at the average pro event.

Since there is nothing at stake except pride, yes it is an exho, but a very serious one at that.

I would love that they put something at stake in the future, something big (maybe not money, but something important legacy wise) cause I think this format is great.

And you are the opposite? :p
He said it was fun, not stunning. ;)
This.

I don't expect an event like Laver Cup to reach that level. The score system makes sure there will probably be a dramatic ending all the time regardless of how many match wins there are on each side, and it's obviously not worthy of pursuing for your legacy or anything remotely similar. But the actual tennis is rather competitive, players and viewers are hyped. What I have noticed as well is that this might be the one tiny part of the year when most of the tennis fans get along, it's a nice short break from all the sh1tposting waves we see throughout the season. Even if you are fully behind Team Europe or World, this isn't serious or important enough for you to be even a little bit upset by a different outcome. Slams and some other tournaments can be totally nerve wrecking if you are passionately cheering for your favorite player(s), but this isn't. Call it all scripted but for all the reasons mentioned earlier, I say I still like it.

Something like this year's Wimbledon is what I call stunning. ;)

I am starting to think that what separates this from an exho is the team element. They want to impress on each other and don't let their teammates down. It seems that being part of a team make them more nervous in some situations compared to when they play for themselves.

Yes, but also they can be team mates with players they are rivals with on normal ATP tour. Format is simple as well and ratches up over the weekend and gives the weaker side a chance to catch up. The fact it’s only 2 sets and a super tie break adds to it as it gives players lower ranked a better chance to beat higher ranked players. The shorter format will also attract a new generation of fans with short attention spans, who find best of 5 sets too long.

There will be legacy. Time builds it, give it a few more years. DC doesn't give points anymore but the nations still love winning it.

OK It's not an exho!!!!! All the poor players are so desperate to win the 6000 points and the prize money! It's very serious!
