laver cup is officially dead

I love the format, I love the camaraderie, the team atmosphere is great putting folks together who are not normally close, interesting matchups, exciting doubles, tribute to Laver, Borg and McEnroe, refreshing change from the week to week mundane crapola..

What is there to not like ?
Fed had a lot to do with it.

Lol I have no idea about the exact breakdown.

In this post @BeatlesFan says Roger makes all the money from Lavers cup

The inaugural Laver Cup in Prague didn't make a profit. Later, they probably found more sponsors.

Fed's agent Godstick on Laver Cup: "Over the first year in Prague we lost money, in Chicago we were already up and we expect it in Geneva too ":

You think Laver would just take handouts from Roger personally? You must not know many Australians.
There are probably many, many easier ways to set Rod up with a trust fund than to create an entire ATP tournament for him

I like Laver cup matches, fast surface, short and exciting matches.
Sometime atmosphere is too much scripted but I like the matches.
My problem is it should not be official, it is Invitational Tournament, should always be exhibition.
It should not be counted in h2h

I've enjoyed some of the Laver Cup matches. It's tennis, it's entertainment. But if Kyrgios is going to be a part of it with lots of air time, I won't be watching.

Laver's Cup is wrong for so many reasons

01. It has nothing to do with Laver, it should be renamed as Federer's cup
02. It is a dishonest attempt by Roger to mint money at the expense of ATP
03. It is not even real competition, it is an exhibition type nonsense

Laver's cup should be cancelled and a proper tournament should be put in its place or maybe shift other tournaments to its slot.
I’m sure there is a legit tourney out there that would love to Brand with Fed… makes way more sense

The Laver Cup would have been a great charity exhibition tournament in the 2000s when we could have had some real stars taking part.

Not just the big four of Europe with Roger, Rafa, Novak, and Murray, but also Ferrer, Tsonga, Santoro, Monfils, Safin etc.

Team World could have had Hewitt, Roddick, Del Potro, Blake, Nalbandian, Gonzales etc etc.

In other words real popular crowd favourites who knew how to whip a crowd into a frenzy and had grit and tenacity in spades.

Unfortunately it started about 10-15 years too late, and without Fedal playing doubles together there's no real reason to watch it aside from "ooh is there tennis on?"

Last year I made sure to tune in to see Federer's final match, and I'll forever kick myself for not tuning in to see the Fedal doubles a few years ago, but this year for I've got no desire to watch it at all.

I don't want to spend my free time watching a bunch of bored looking athletes not caring about what they're doing or making any effort to interact with each other, especially when you've got Federer and McEnroe on the sidelines who despite having a broken knee and a bus pass between them, could still put on a better show than anyone else there.

It’s not a terrible idea in theory but the more it doesn’t go off ranking and just used some entirely arbitrary team selection, the faster I think it should end

The teams are not selected arbitrarily. The four players are selected by ranking and the captain for each team gets two captains picks. This ATP event has been around long enough to know how the teams are selected. You guys don't even try understand the rules, just want discredit it because of your own bias. John McEnroe selected Nick as Captain's pick.

the captain’s picks are the definition of arbitrary…

I don’t see the problem. Each team gets four ranked players then the captain gets to pick two players that may not highly ranked but can help position the team to win. Just because you guys want to discredit the event as a mere exhibition, it’s not. The ranked players who want to play will play, those who don’t will not, simple as that.
