Laver Cup starts Friday

Olympic athletes are chosen based on their performance history in various tournaments through a rigorous system of qualifying trials.

Laver Cup participants are not. They are chosen based on factors like geographical representation and marketing value.

You first said because it doesn’t award points , it is exho. When I pointed to Olympics and Davis cup, you are now going somewhere else .

Very low ranked player can get in Olympics based on their country . Not so with Laver Cup.

The main intent of Roger was to honor legends , the money is a by product

It was an ego trip so that he could announce his retirement there instead of after losing the last match like players have always done. He knew that Nadal and Djokovic had surpassed him and he could not do the usual retirement thing due to ego. Now it is about money.

So he planned all that.....six years before his actual retirement?

Nostradamus has nothing on him!

Meh if you don't like it don't watch it. I'm sure the titanic battles in Hangzhou and Chengdu are gonna be far more entertaining and valuable for the sport globally.

It used to annoy me that there were so many versions of a boxing world championship, but having different organisations running competing events is called ... capitalism.

Id like all these exhos to be removed from the tennis calendar. They are not my cup of tea
It's not an exhibition. It's an official ATP event with significant prize money. Exhibition matches involve zero prize money.

Get an actual clue before commenting, thanks.

6 Kings Slam exhibition event has a prize money. The winner takes home $1.5 million + $4.5 million.

Each of the six participants is guaranteed a participation fee of US$1,500,000, with the winner taking home an additional $4.5 million, for $6 million total.

Ok, I should have specified that MOST exhibitions offer no prize money.

Still the main point is that the Laver Cup is NOT an exhibition as "Nappa" was trying to claim it is. It's an official ATP Event.

I still ask him to get an actual clue before commenting in a Laver Cup thread.

Carry on...

It became an official ATP event after the fact when the ATP realized there was money in it.

It awards no points and does not have a fair selection process and is geared towards getting the currently marketable players, meritorious or not.

In Trump's language, it is a DEI program for Europeans, with some others thrown in to show otherwise.

It is a fair process per country (hopefully). Laver Cup selection is completely arbitrary.

That is a quota system without talent . Europe vs Rest of world provides opportunity for top talent .

You don’t like top talent being recognized and want tennis to be socialistic benefiting everyone equally ??

Yes, but not a 50% quota for European males
