And so a great new tournament appeared to have been born. But it has become one of the most irregardless tournmanets of the year. 4 editions has been held, and Europe has won them all -
15-9 in 2017
13-8 in 2018
13-11 in 2019
14-1 in 2021

It's obvious that apart from 2019, there is no question who will win before the tournament. Currently in top 13, there is one player for Team World, and 10 for Team Europe, the last 2 being Russians.

It's obviously a problem, but the Laver Cup is a great idea, and we can continue seeing Federer in the tennis world, if the tournament becomes a succes, which it isn't right now.

So what should happen

Should they change the teams?
Cancel the tournmanet?
Keep it as it is?

Eliminate or ignor it!

Should be league way where bidding etc happen and multiple teams are formed with a finite purse with each team owner. Will be ultra fun.

Reactions: vex
europe vs the world has no sense, its too one sided

It would have been one sided the other way in the 90s when Sampras, Agassi, Courier would have all been on the 'world' side. Of course back then they could have done the US vs the world. But the talent balance shifts, it just takes a bit of time. Do you redesign the format every year? I think the Borg vs McEnroe idea would be best. And just let them 2 draft teams. It would be even better if 1 of them could draft Rafa and Fed and the other drafts Djokovic. Talk about a ratings bonanza.

Yeah what would be difficult is that the teams were balanced, thats why a draft based on the ranking system or another kind of idea thst makes it more interesting would be better

They need a normal draw, that's it. Players teaming up under the lead of ATGs should be the core concept. Not Europe vs the World which is just a horribly imbalanced matchup with peactically the same teams time and time again.

Surprised Roger and his agent didn't think this through. Guessing that the first edition was an experiment and because it went really well, they decided to just leave things as is. Not particularly shrewd decision-making.

Make it Big 3 against anyone else. Same format as now, 12 matches in total, 4 matches per day.

Every day all of the Big 3 play one singles match.
The 4th match every day is a doubles match, so that every Big 3 combination will play together once.

Given how many podcasters, youtubers, commentators, tournament directors cash in on Big 3 name, it's a shame that big 3 themselves aren't using this cup.

Big 3 + Kyrgios vs the world. Even more drama.

It should really be EU vs Rest of the World., I mean they even use the EU flag for team Europe. At least this way players from Russia, Serbia, Switzerland, UK, Norway etc would be playing for rest of the World. Might even the teams up a bit

Have the #1 and #2 ranked players captain the two teams and the two can then take turns drafting players for each team. Players must be ranked in the top 20 or something like that. Maybe even reserve one spot on each team for a recently retired player (Delpo, Tsonga, etc). Then have the McEnroes, Borgs etc serve as senior captain/coach.
I completely agree that the current setup with something like 70 slam titles on team Blue and zero on team Red is an absolute joke.

Sounds similar to the NBA All-Star game method, which is way better than the old East/West format.

Poland and Russia in the same team. Oof.

I like watching the Laver Cup. So it's not a 'real' tournament. It's entertainment. And it can be fun watching the guys interact on the sidelines.

It however does need to be fixed for a better distribution of talent. But I doubt that will happen this year - mainly because the organizers want Fed and Rafa on the same team so they can play doubles again. After that, who knows?

Laver Cup is a glorified exhibition using the Laver name to promote and anoint with importance, faux though it may be. It garners viewers, sponsors, broadcasting dollars and is certainly a good payday for the players. As long as it checks all the financial boxes it stays. If fans like it and believe it "important" so much the better.
