Laver Cup is a glorified exhibition using the Laver name to promote and anoint with importance, faux though it may be. It garners viewers, sponsors, broadcasting dollars and is certainly a good payday for the players. As long as it checks all the financial boxes it stays. If fans like it and believe it "important" so much the better.
If the Grand Old Gentleman, two time Grand Slam winner can see a few more dollars in his pocket from it, so much the better. He's deserving.I was surprised when it the Laver Cup first appeared. Fed had said many years ago that Rod L should be honoured for his achievements, something that we may not see again in our lifetime. So we see the L Cup amongst many other Rod L endorsements in the last few years. That gold Rolex is always on Rod's wrist whenever he's in attendance on the front row seats in tournaments, a gift from Rolex with Fed being the brand ambassador.......?
Prize money were peanuts and endorsement were non existence back in the Laver era. So he has been presented with another chance in the 20th century to get as much $$$ that he could have got if they existed back in his days. I don't agree or disagree with it.
Hmm. Fed himself is the organizer, he is an owner of the tournament.I like watching the Laver Cup. So it's not a 'real' tournament. It's entertainment. And it can be fun watching the guys interact on the sidelines.
It however does need to be fixed for a better distribution of talent. But I doubt that will happen this year - mainly because the organizers want Fed and Rafa on the same team so they can play doubles again. After that, who knows?
We could at least get Russia to play for World. That might help.europe vs the world has no sense, its too one sided
It's Europe vs the World? For Europe, Zverev likely will still be out. Tsitsipas isn't at the top of his game. Besides doubles, will Rafa and Fed play singles? Will Djokovic or the Russians participate? Will Sinner and Berretini be healthy? Is Alcaraz old enough to join the adults??
Apparently Alcaraz has been asked to play. Whether he said yes, no idea. It's Europe vs the World? For Europe, Zverev likely will still be out. Tsitsipas isn't at the top of his game. If the world team is short of players, maybe Laver himself can play.
As long as there are fans to pay, the event will continue.
