Laver Cup..Whats the point?

idk people never had a hard time attaching themselves to a particular team the last two years. there is still a cup involved and when you watch it and see the competitive spirit, atleast for me it draws me in. im not saying there arent issues with it, but i truly dont get people beign so up in arms about basically a tournament in its third yet that is 3 days
I am not up in arms, I don't mind the event at all, but it's realistically speaking just an exhibition event.

They need to throw in women in there. From the WTA, or just random topless...

Yea but that's Nadal. It's still not a good look either way and it will be interesting to see how Nadal handles having to be around this idiot. I think it's a slap in his face as well. There are other players who are decent and higher ranked than Kyrgios.
Djokovic wasn't coming anyway. No one else is going to generate the same interest as Kyrgios or have a better shot in singles against Fedal than Kyrgios. Have to give the people what they want to see. Nadal doesn't have a permanent chip on his shoulder, so he moves on.

No Djokovic wasn't coming anyway but this sure isn't going to make him rush to sign up for it again. Just saying. Nadal made his choice to come months ago anyway before this announcement and we already know how he feels about this dude. How are you so sure about where his stance is? I don't expect someone like you to get what I'm saying anyway so why waste your time and mine?

The only reason I replied was because there was insinuation that Djokovic would be a better judge of character than Federer and you have to expect some type of response to that.

Sorry but Kyrgios is a Federer a-$$ kisser and he kissed his a-$$ so he can cash in. I guess it worked. The way it looks is Federer rewarded him for his efforts even though he disrespected two legends and his peers this year. I expected for him to be invited but I'm just highlighting what I think is a difference between Djokovic and Federer. You are a Federer and Kyrgios fan so of course you don't see anything out of place. Why are you wasting both of our time?

Fine, I'll stop wasting our time Nolefam. It's not like we're gonna get any likes for it anyway

Its purpose is to have fun playing and watching tennis. It helps to expose the sport to make it more lucrative as a profession for the top players. It attempts to advance the sport by inventing creative formats that players and spectators enjoy. If you don't enjoy it, you don't have to watch it or play it. There are plenty enough players who decline to play it, and apparently plenty who refuse to watch it as well.

Op is a weird question. It’s the same as the point of any tournament - to get top players to play against each other, so that fans can watch.

For the players, the point is the money they are paid for it, plus potentially the chance to play acompetitive match against other top players in a lower pressure situation.

For the fans, the point is to see top players play against each other.

For the organizers, they presumably make money, if the amount they paythe players and for the venue is less than they bring in from ticket sales and advertising.

This is all about the same as for any other tournament.

It's fun. It's like the All-star break in others sports where players on separate teams get to play together for a change.

It's an exciting exo and should've stayed that way. Inexcusable that it retroactively counts as an official ATP event.

My sentiments exactly about it.

Yeah, but it means nothing even as an ATP event. No points, don't think titles, and only h2h (worthless anyways).

Laver Cup is Tennis version of the Harlem Globetrotters vs the Washington Generals. It a little entertaining, but the results are baked in the cake.

Don't see the problem here. Tennis is entertainment. Tennis matches don't cure cancer. They don't achieve things of benefit to the world intrinsically. Their value is in that they are enjoyable to watch.

The Laver cup is entertaining. The players seem to enjoy it and it's fun to watch. I don't see why people take issue with it.

The thing would be really cool if they didn't pretend it's a competition. Watching them being so fakely happy disgusts me. Last year they didn't play the last match (Djokovic/Kyrgios) because Team Europe had already won... This is so disrepectful for the spectators who absolutely don't care which team wins but only wants to see some crazy tennis.

They don't show these kind of emotions even in most competitive matches.

If Novak was such a noble man like you’re making him out to be in your imaginary scenario, he wouldn’t still be backing Gimelstob

Despite it's name we all know it's really The Federer Cup and, instead of persisting with the Europe vs Rest Of The World nonsense (absurd because the vast majority of the best players are from Europe) why don't they simply follow the practice of the WTF and divide into 2 teams with the name of a former tennis great or a colour to differentiate them?
What they need to do is have 2 legends of the game (like Borg and Mac since they were the captains last edition) be captains and have a draft where all the players participating would be on a draft board. They way teams are way more balanaced, and it places a greater emphasis on the captains decision. There would be a lot more strategy involved to as you could pick a guy to play against a guy he matches better up with.

Two different situations since this is about someone publicly disrespecting your peers. Novak is reluctant to shun Gimelstob like some would like because he thinks he did a lot of good for the sport before his recent downfall. He was on the board since 2008 after all. I do know Djokovic did not defend Kyrgios like some others did when the Wawrinka situation went down so that is a similar situation.

Exactly. One is far more severe than the other and Djokovic is reluctant to do the ‘right’ thing in the more severe one. So how are we supposed to know what he would do in feds position in a matter of just some bad words?

In my view, the wawrinka situation was worse than this, but let’s say they’re comparable. Then I’d make the judgement that Novak is fine to say a few words and condemn a person, but isn’t as strong when it comes to actually laying down a punishment and condemning the perpetrator when he has control, or that he isn’t as willing to do so if doing so would take away from his personal aim, both conclusions that can be made based upon the Gimelstob debacle. So saying Novak wouldn’t have done the same as roger who’s in a similar authoritarian position as Novak, is pure fantasy.
