Lead tape under grip?

When I put strips of lead tape under the grip, (right on the handle) the adhesive of my replacement-grip sticks to the lead-tape.... And everytime I remove the grip, the strips are stuck to the grip's adhesive and get ripped from the handle.

I intend to keep using replacement grips since they are tougher than overgrips; is there anyway to prevent the lead-strips from getting stuck to the grip?

jmsx521,

I don't think there is any good solution to your issue. That is sort of a well known limitation of putting lead tape under the grip. As long as grips are held down by adhesives (forever?) this will plague folks.

I personally think putting weights into the handle via the butt cap is the best way to go. I've never seen anyone use lead tape under the grip wrap work out very well.

I assume you know what I'm talking about - if not, just holler and I'll be happy to elaborate. Sorry I can't be of more help on the lead tape under grip thing.

Cheers.

Yes, a very simple way.

Just use your finger to lightly "smudge" some powder (talc) on the lead prior to placing the replacement. Make sure that the talc does not get on any other area.

Putting lead tape under the grip is actually my preferred way of weighting the handle.

To prevent the problem you're describing, I've used Saran wrap (or Glad wrap). Cut enough to go around the handle a couple of times over the lead tape, and then wrap you replacement grip over that. It's a bit fiddly, but it really works.

Good luck.

A Prince tuned racket (Can i called it stock form ?)

i just bought a Prince Air DB midplus. and its grip is melting, must hve laid in a hot warehouse for a yr or two. That's why they re all out on sale. I don't like the real mess of the melted grip so i took it out. Guess what ...

There is a 6" (0.5" wide) Lead tape along the whole grip. A single one, not in pair, should be about 3g. No protection over it, so it almost come out with the replacement. Just like the OP said.

I am a Poisoning expert :D, and i don't like ppl adding that for me. It's my job ! So i cut it into 2 halves and put in at the bottom end of the grip.
Man, i forgot to put clear tape over them as usual, b4 putting layers of overgrip on it. Hope they don't come out (through the grips) over time.

BTW, the repl grip is so thin, that 2 layers of overgrip already get the size bigger than the original one. (and it's a tad smaller than std i guess)

When you guys put lead tape under the grip, where exactly on the handle does the tape end up? That is, do you only put it at the bottom of the handle, or do you evenly space it out along the handle, or do you only put it at the top of the handle?

I'm trying to give my racquet more of a head-light feel, and so I have some lead strips inside the handle at the base. I also have some strips at the top of the handle, under the grip.

I dunno, it doesn't feel right. Any recs? I guess I would like it to feel more like a 6.1, any idea how what the weight distribution in Wilson's handles is like?

Thanks!

The method I've been using the last several years (found it on racquet research dot com, I think) is one of the best, imo. It results in the added weight being directly under your hand as you grip the racquet, which to me feels much more natural than concentrating weight under the butt cap or at the top of the handle.

The lead tape goes on longitudinally along the 3:00 and 9:00 bevels of the handle (racquet lying flat on a table). On these bevels, mark the points 7 cm from the butt cap end of the handle. Take your strips of lead tape and mark the midpoints of the strips. Apply the strips with their midpoints aligned with the 7 cm marks. Replace the racquet grip.

Hope this is clear. Ask if not.

Good luck.

naturallight

some ppl like to add some above the handle. i really don't like the feel.

Feel is one thing, it feels heavier to swing (which is not my desire).
Theory is another, if u put more towards the End of the handle, it shifts the Balance most with given amount of weight. It also provides the most moment of Inertia against ball impact. (more polarization).

So i like to keep the grip shorter, like the new K90. and only add lead strips towards the bottom 12/13 cm. (I like to grap the very end of handle when playing. So if U grap the racket higher, then u may adjust that distance higher.)

This preference may not work for others, try it and find out yourself. good luck.

BTW, some ppl don't like tail weight at all. In that case, any added tail wt would slow the swing, reduce the power and make the racket less "enjoyable" (easy to play with) for them.
