Lead/tungsten tape in throat?

Hey guys, my 2013 APD GT is 330g stringed and I'm thinking to add some weight to it. I tried to add 6g to 3-9 (each side 3g) to the head but I didn't like the feeling. Racket flied harder through the air. I'm thinking to change synthetic replacement grip for leather grip. That might add ~ 8-10g to the handle, and maybe 3g inside the throat? What would you recommend from your experience? Thanks

Leather grip makes the feedback harsh on this. I would recommend Skinfeel replacement grip if you want more feel and putty or bluetac in handle and maybe 2-3 grams at 12. The weight at 3 and 9 on hoop makes the stick swing weird and sluggish. The racquet takes weight at tips very well. For ref, I played with APD for many years.

Thanks, I'll try the Skinfeel. How much of blue tack in the handle?

Yep, Skinfeel is very nice actually. I used it for a while too. I had 12g in handle, 3 grams at 12. Total static weight was close to 345g, balance came close to 6-7 point HL if I recall correctly. Swung very nicely.

Instead of a leather grip try Wilson's Shock Shield replacement grip. Helps reduce vibration and similar weight to a leather grip.

...why? What are you trying to get?

Skin feel is a good grip - just keep in mind that it is likely a few grams lighter than most grips. I’ve never used the shock shield grip but compared to skin feel, that’s about as different as they come.

I add bluetack in the trapdoor and lead at 7” on the handle. I’ve messed around with different weight locations and weight at 7” seems to keep maneuverability the best for a given amt of added weight. I usually add a few grams at 12 too.

Skin feel is quite nice and so is ResiPro which I am switching back to on my Beast frame from leather. Really loved the feel and feedback on that frame with the ResiPro grip

I realited that my grip is already probably smaller than it should be, so I don't want thinner grip but the difference is Skinfeel 1.55mm vs Syntec Pro 1.9mm so not big really

We don't have bluetack in europe but I think I can find similar thing

It’s amazing to me that players add weight to here, there, and everywhere not knowing what the want or what they’ll get when they do. Then when it doesn’t work for them they ask everyone for more suggestions because they think it if works for someone else it might work for them. Albert Einstein - Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again, but expecting different results.

Do you always put at 7 or sometimes at buttcap only?

More mass behind the ball?

Mass below the contact point if I remember correctly doesn’t transfer into the ball nearly to the degree mass above does.

I recently played with mass in the throat after finding my timing to be much more consistent with a wood frame.

I find in some frames lead in the throat helped it swing much more smoothly which helped with timing, but in others the weight made it harder to make RHS.

I used to only add weight in the buttcap. I think it’s necessay for balancing, but if you add too much right at the bottom I think it negatively affects maneuverability. If you only need to add a few grams to reach your spec, that’s probably all you need. If you want to add a decent amount, give 7 a try.

More mass, if you dont like that polarized feeling, you can put at throat and at handle 7 inch from end of racket. It will make your racket more depolarized and hit flatter ball plus a little bit loss of manuverability

Before changing grip, you can try to add tungsten tape from babolat or wilson. Those tungsten tape is very heavy compared to lead and suitable for application at throat and upper handle.

4 inch of wilson tungsten tape (1 strip) can add to 2.5 gram, while 1/4 inch lead tape need 10 inch to get 2.5gram
