Lendl on 1HB vs 2HB

This just in: A two handed backhand is cheating. I was at the gym last night and one of the tvs had bowling on. I saw more two-handed bowlers than one-handed. It looked like adults were reliving a birthday party from when they were five-year-olds.

Yeah it's like stealing candy from a baby! :)

I'm doing exactly this now. As a junior, my 2hbh was my best shot, but I also had a OHBH slice. I stopped playing after high school, picked tennis up again in my 30s, and always wanted to hit a OHBH, so I switched. Big mistake in retrospect. Quit again after our 2nd son was born, and restarted after 7 more years, when my sons showed interest in playing. Got TE, played lefty for a year, then relearned the 2hbh due to the TE. Now, kept the 2hbh for returns and topspin lobs, but back to OHBH.

sad so many pros don't get how to return or hit high balls with a 1 hander. IMHO that "Nadal/ Fed highball is a 1 hander weakness" idea is a myth that has more to do with using a 90" on clay than the type of BH stroke.

High backhands are hard to hit. I don’t understand how it’s easier with two hands with a shorter reach.

It’s not easier but with a 2h hitting it on the rise or slightly out of the strike zone is better. Definitely on the rise or a bit out of the strike zone or off center the leaky shots with 2h imo go deeper or less attackable than a bad 1h. Even in the strike zone a return of serve with the 2h is better so much more stability, disguise, ability to wait and flick it.

Your 2hbh bad shots, on the rise off center , slightly high off center, returns slightly off center, all slightly late 2hbh are all going to be much better than 1hbh off center or slightly late.

It comes down to more control when your dominant hand does not need to go across the body. When you hand over something to someone, do you do it with crossed hands?

Sometimes, it is also a matter of time, like in the service return case.

Next time you handshake, adopt a neutral sideways stance and take your hand back in a unit turn before shaking hands, and let me know the response
sure if you do a unit turn and get in the pat the dog position next time you shake hands and let me know.

I suppose there may be some rec players where their OHBH backhand is THE glaring issue causing losses in matches...but...for the other 99% of players, it's more than that.
