Of this afternoon for my annual pilgrimage to Tarbes for this years Les Petits As. I am travelling with a player to the World Junior Wheelchair Masters, which runs along side the Les Petits As event.

The best under 14's in the world will be competing and as before I will report on any tactical or technical trends I see whilst there - if anyone has anything specific they would like some insight on let me know on this thread.

1) Any one handed backhands and any trends with their technique?
2) Player Height, are they taller than previous years?
3) Net Play, More or less than previous years?
4) Physical Condition, Even though it's under 14, do you think speed of movement, and general physical conditioning is any different to previous years?

Any girls hitting ATP style forehands (more compact stroke in general)? Are the boys primarily double bend?

Are serves moving toward abbreviated take backs?

A bit different subject- is the wheel chair competition in the second week of Australan?

I am interested in how much slice is used on the backhand side and if there's any noticeable difference between the sexes in this regard. Enjoy your trip.

Apologies for my recent absence, but it was out of my hands!

I will do my best to get back to answering q's and updating from here after play has finished for the day.

Quick update - don't feel the quality overall is quite as high this year as in previous years and no single player has really stood out to me yet. Watched a great girls match yesterday between a Chinese-American girl and a Chinese girl (12th and 8th seeds respectively) which went to 3 sets. The American girl has phenomenal movement - very fast feet and with great balance, even when on the run. The Chinese girl is about 6ft tall and very rangey, she hit the ball big (very big), but very smooth and with clean contacts. As usual with the girls the down the line backhand was important and the Chinese girl hits it beautifully. On this instance the American girl came out victorious, showing some good touch at the net and the ability to retrieve enough balls, but I would hazard a guess that of the 2, the Chinese girl will be the more likely to transition into ITF's and maybe beyond - she has very clean strokes and some weapons.

Not seen much of the boys yet, will try and catch some today.

1) Have seen 2, 1 boy, 1 girl - neither made the late stages of the event (not that that necessarily has any correlation)
2) Overall the mixed bag you would expect from a 12-14 event, those in the later stages are the most physically developed (as you might expect)
3) Boys are playing a very all court game, looking to come forward (especially those that have gone deep in the draw). The girls are staying back more and only really coming up the court when they have to.
4) Most kids here look like athletes - they take their physical prep seriously from what I can see (diligent warm-ups, band work etc). One player I've seen has perhaps not the ideal physique (was the number one seed actually and lost to a player with excellent movement skills)

Lots of the girls have pretty efficient swing paths, boys are hitting whatever their contact point dictates - straighter arm if the contact is further forward, less so if not. Girls are nearly all double bend and both bent arms on backhands (a couple of exceptions, who have the best backhands in my opinion).

Serves are mostly variations of abbreviated take backs.

Boys are more than happy to mix in the slice, both offensively and defensively (and some very effectively too). Girls seem to be more likely to slice when they have to rather than through tactical intention (generalising).

The player I am here with is now the Junior Wheelchair World Doubles Champion and has the singles final in the morning, hopefully can make it two titles from two.

Well, it's all over for another year. Gut feel is that the standard in the boys and girls events wasn't as high as in previous years, but the four finalists are definitely those who deserved to be there, given the quality of the tennis they played over the course of the event. The girls winner was a player I picked out in the first round as I like they way she approached the game, enough intensity, but not enough to boil over, good athlete and technically very sound. The boys winner I didn't actually get to see until the final today, but he is a class act and happens to be from the US of A - your future is sound there! Great off both wings, cannon of a serve and very mobile too, with good hands at net.

As for us, well we came away with the doubles title and a runner up in singles. Had a solid game plan, but couldn't quite execute in the first set breaker and ran out of steam in the second set against the top seed - will hopefully be back next year to go one better!

Last pics of finals day...

Great photos, thanks for the updates. Its good that there still are people here that are actual professionals and live what they talk about, instead of the usual vocal armchair coaches without any experience and knowledge.
