Let's appreciate John Isner

Isner > Raonic
Raonic just rubs me the wrong way with his ridiculous serving motion and how much he extends his whole arm setting up for a forehand. Isner is just a cool dude who wears his cap backwards.

Never been a fan of backwards caps. I believe it was Lleyton Hewitt who started that nonsense (bad Lleyton). You never see the top players today ever wearing a backwards cap whilst playing. Big John should take note that if he hopes to progress to winning a Slam he should lose the backwards cap. He has short hair so what does he need it for anyway?

Jack Sock? I do kinda agree with the backwards cap... But anyways the point I was trying to make is that Isner doesn't really bother me at all even if his whole game does revolve around his serve. Maybe I just like his face and attitude better. Maybe it's just something about the energy he gives off. Whereas Raonic... *shudders*

Kiefer, Grosjean, Haas all did it.

They're all older than Hewitt. I was pointing out that Hewitt didn't start it. It was just the style around the late 90s/early 2000s.

But you still see many players doing it like Isner and Sock but I can't think of any Slam champion of the last 20 years or so who wore one on court with the exception of Hewitt.

That's because top players get endorsements and most companies don't want their sponsored athletes wearing their hat backwards. In part because it doesn't show the logo.

They should put logo on back also, and include some moisture absorbant material too. When the sun not in your eyes, backward makes sense, there are other options, but less control is better I don't think its a hinderance

Maybe Marcelo Rios was the 1st ATP player to do it. Here's a young Marcelo Rios in 1993.

The Guy is like one of the Top 10 players in the freaking world.....How can anyone really knock him or his style of play? I mean he is one of the 10 best humans on the planet at tennis.

The Guy is like not very interesting to watch for some tennis fans. There is like no relationship between being like Top 10 in the world and whether someone enjoys him or his style of play. If your like principle held you wouldn't have like a bunch of teens on this board spewing endlessly about Fed or Nadal who are like two of the GOATs. Your last sentence is like redundant. Also, John isn't like one of the Top 10 players in the world. He is currently one of the Top 10 players.

So like you can't please all the people all the time. For some you can always find something to complain about, or you can choose to recognize something positive. For some glass is always half empty. I can understand always wanting to improve yourself, but for some they need to improve everyone else too. So what's title of the thread. His serve is awesome and he even jumps, like he needs to. Against delpo in semi Miami he played multidimensional game. I enjoy watching great servers ace their way through a game. Not like its all i'm allowed to watch.

I very much appreciate you clearing that up for me. I also appreciate a good dose of sarcasm. I also appreciate a smart @55. oh wait was that redundant???

Sure, but only if that 7'4 player happens to be among the best 10-20 basketball players in the world. Porzingis or Yao Ming are the best comparisons to Isner that I can think of.
Shaq is the best comparison. Although, Shaq was a great athlete. Still, he couldn't have played in the league at 6'2. No shooting skill whatsoever. At 7'2 and playing his game, unstoppable.

Shaq was one of the greatest ever so that's not a great comparison for Isner. If Isner won a bunch of grand slams and spent a decent amount of time at #1, then I would agree with it.

Team sport vs individual. One on one basketball would show shaqs ability vs other top nba players. Might show fitness issue. isner is actually one on one at a higher level. Still its apples and oranges.

Let's not.

Let's not be mean and acknowledge that he managed to land at least 1 big title before he hangs up his racquet. It must have stung for his fellow-countryman, poor old Mardy Fish who lost 4 Masters finals and lamented that he couldn't finish his career with at least 1 Masters title to his name!

Can't believe Big John lost to a stinkin servebot. He'll regroup, do some bass fishin, be back in no time.

Reilly - 90/8 career. 90% of service games, 8% of return games.
Isner - 92/11 career.

John in 2007 - 91/6
2008 - 88/8

Similar stats, bookend bots. ;)

Will probably be interesting to see where Opelka ends up. Given that he's gonna play his full ATP season I expect to improve a bit this year, but he'll also play touther opponents, which will halt the stats

Seems like a pattern for these guys. They start off winning around 90% of service games or close but not much more than 50% of games. They have an advantage in regular sets, just have to keep holding serve, but not so good in TBs. For example, Karlovic has a 52% TB record, career, which is not much more than pure chance. Isner is 60% career, a lot better, but that's still not super impressive. Roanic is 59%. Kevin Anderson, 55%. But 65% for Fed. Turns out the best predictor of a good TB record is a balanced game, although in any given year it can vary radically.
