And Prequels...
Which sequels were better than their predecessors? Which were worse? Which Prequels blew your mind?

1. Empire Strikes Back
2. The Dark Knight
3. Spider-Man 2
4. Terminator 2: Judgement Day

just to name a few.

Which Prequels were worse?
1. The 3 non-existent star wars movies we don't talk about.

Which sequels were bad?
1. The non existent Indiana Jones movie we don't talk about.

On the top of my head, Avengers 2 > Avengers (watched it the other day).

I also think Psycho 2 is one of the greatest sequels ever. Of course, not better than the original, but still pretty damn amazing. And heavily uderrated.

I see the usual suspects have been mentioned already. Some more.

The Donner version is superior to the Lester version. I think they are both better than Superman the movie. The ''General, would you care to step outside?'' line was missed on the Donner version.

A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors is better than Freddy's Revenge.

What else?

I think Rocky got better as it went along, up until Rocky 4 at least..

Jaws 2, wasn't that better too!

Agree with the Superman 2 consensus as well.

The Bond franchise arguably got better over the years. Casino Royal with David Niven was not as good as Dr No, nor was than in turn as good as Goldfinger, which was probably the peak in bond movies.

As much as I love The Godfather II in all honesty it wasn't as good as the first. As is the case with Superman 2. Superman: The Movie actually explored arcs and did a decent character study on the internal conflict of Superman. As well as ground breaking visual effects that changed cinema. And the production design was off the charts.

I can agree with that.

I thought Avengers 2 was awful.

The Up Series of documentaries,I think they got better and better until about 35 Up. Terminator 2 was definitely superior to the original. You can make a strong case for The Godfather 2,but when it comes down to it,I don't think it quite has the power of the original. I actually preferred Clerks 2 to Clerks,I know I'd probably be in the minority on that one. Popular responses to this question might be Before Sunset/Midnight and Toy Story 2/3. I've never seen the Toy Story sequels, but I didn't like the Before sequels as much as the original...

I thought The Winter Soldier was better than Captain America.

Winter Soldier IMO is the best Marvel film to date.

Wasn't a big fan of AOU. Didn't like it much at all tbh. Which is a shame cause I thought it could've been something special.

Age of Empires II was a winner.
Heroes of Might and Magic III likewise.
Diablo III was a bummer.
Phantom ****** was never going to live up to the hype, was it. Episode VII is doomed to face the same fate.
Champions League is a flop as a sequel to the European Cup.
Whirlwind disappointed as a "sequel" in Clavell's 'Noble House' series.

I'll try to think of more prequels and sequels.

I agree with a lot of these.

Winter Soldier is better IMO.
Superman 2 is better IMO.
Mad Max 2 is better IMO.
Aliens better than Alien IMO.
Shot in the Dark is better IMO.
Die Hard with a Vengence is better IMO.
Wrath of Khan is better IMO.
Mission Impossible 2 is better IMO.
Most Harry Potter sequels.

Some debatables (but I prefer them)...

Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade
Terminator 2
The Dark Knight Rises
Bourne Ultimatum
X Men Last Stand

The Godfather part II and Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade are the only sequels I think are definitely better.

Possibly Toy Story 3, Rocky IV and Magnum Force.

What do you think about the Dollars Trilogy? Do they count? Because isn't The Good, The Bad and Ugly actually a prequel? That and For a Few Dollars More are both superior to the first film.

I'd agree about The Good, the Bad and the Ugly but not necessarily about For a Few Dollars More.

Nonetheless, all great films in my book. FWIW, High Plains Drifter is my fave of the "genre" (Clint films) even if Leone wasn't involved.

Yes of course....Magnum Force is a great film.

And I agree...FAFDM and TGTBATU are superior to AFFOD.

Empire Strikes Back
The Dark Knight

As far as Aliens being superior to Alien...no. Just no.

I think we should treat them as stand-alone films in the context of this thread.

The Casino Royale with David Niven wasn't part of the Bond series, it was a satirical take on Bond after the producer couldn't come to an agreement with Broccoli & Saltzman, the producers of the real Bond series.

The whole thing is a shambles. Nothing could be further removed from the original charm of Moore and Connery. It really is shameful that these long advertisements are billed as installments in the James Bond saga.

I tend to agree with this. Those are the two that spring to mind. I'd add From Russia with Love. I dig it, and it's a clear step up from Dr. No.

As far as Alien(s) goes, I also tend to agree, although I guess the case can be (and has been) made for Aliens. But I definitely prefer the slow-burner that is Alien.

Unbelievable:shock:

You are talking about the contemporary Bond movies, aren't you? They are talking about the 60's Casino Royal movie with David Niven and Peter Sellers. Pardon if that was indeed what you were referring to.

Recently, I say How To Train Your Dragon 2 is better than the first, wow what a fantastic follow-up.

ugh, completely disagree.

also, Kung Fu Panda 2 was much worse than the original which was fantastic.

i think they both were Dream Work films. they had issues with their animated sequels.

Yeah, I think both are great but I prefer Alien. I would say this is one franchise that rigidly adheres to the law of diminishing returns. With that in mind I expect the Prometheus sequel to be the worst film ever made!

Personal favs:

Alien > Alien³ (note: Assembly Cut, not the original Theatrical Cut. Two completely different movies) > Aliens > Alien: Ressurection.

As far as Prometheus goes, I think the idea behind it is very good and it had the potentional to be a great movie, but... it failed. Still, I like it, mainly because it brings out interesting questions and thoughts.

Sequels in great series don't have that newness factor that makes first films extra special, thus it if difficult for sequels. The novelty factor of Star Wars vs Empire is not to be underestimated, when it came out. Sure nowadays when you can download them sequentially and bingewatch over a weekend, Empire is a better film, but at the time, nothing (not even Empire) beat Star Wars within that genre.

Here in the US the obvious answer is Road Warrior vs Mad Max, since no one saw Mad Max.

As to Alien(s), that is a special case since they are in two different genres. They are both excellent within their genres but fewer patrons prefer the two genres equally so it is difficult to find an unbiased reviewer.

The Hobbit trilogy will go down as solidifying Peter Jackson's legacy of descending into George Lucas-territory awfulness. Dreadful movies, especially the last two. Random love story between Kili and Evangeline Lily, along with dumb video game physics? lol ok. I'm putting it up there with the Star wars prequel that no one should acknowledge as existing

I love The Hobbit films. Not as good as LOTR but still great. I admit I can see the problems that you and others find with them, but I just have a blind spot when it comes to the movies flaws. I love the world too much!

I don't mind the Star Wars prequels, though I don't think they're in the same class as the originals.

One sequel to a classic that I really don't like is The Godfather part III. I'm surprised that a lot of people now seem to like it. I think it is vastly weaker than the first two in every department.

I think when all is said and done,Heavenly Creatures will probably go down as Peter Jackson's best film
