Level of Tennisrecruiting 4-star recruit?

I just played a USTA men's open tournament and lost (badly!) to a 17 year-old, who is a "4-star recruit" on tennisrecruiting.net. I am curious, what is the level of a 4-star recruit? Is he a high/medium/low level D1/D2/D3 player?

Thanks!

Don't feel bad. A four star is usually ranked around top 100 in the nation or top in his section. The best colleges take 5 stars and blue chips usually, but a 4 star would have a good chance to play on a lower D1 school.

rafabull, thanks for the info. I entered this tournament purposely to play up, and it turns out I ran into the #1 seed in the 2nd round (the 17 year-old). It was a good learning experience! He won the tournament without dropping a set, beating a former world #700-ish in his 30s in the final.

chalkflewup, the score was 6-0 6-1 =D I hope he did not get too bored!

The 4-star recruit I know accepted a scholarship to a smaller D1 school in california. He wins open level matches and can work over 5.0 level players.

Stars are updated twice a year. I don't know when that is but you can find it easily on the TRN website. When the stars are updated you will be higher and he will be lower.

Approximately:

1 - 25 in graduating class: Blue chip
26 - 75 : 5 star
76 - 200: 4 star
201 - 400: 3 star
401 - 600: 2 star
601 on down: 1 star

The definitions of 2-star are now relaxed to take into account how many ranked players are in each graduating class, so it goes below #600 for most graduating classes.

I would say 4 star is about medium level d1. it depends, because a 4 star could be a good junior, but not have a good game for college. I know a 4 star that will play high level d1 because he has a huge game, whereas a 4 star I beat probably won't play very high d1 college because he's just consistent, but no weapons.

The best 4 star of all time is probably one of our former players at UGA, Drake Bernstein. Drake was the highest ranked 4 star probably ever coming in at #15 nationally. Sometimes tennisrecruiting makes mistakes in handing out their stars. That is a good
example. Drake turned out to be a pretty solid player with over 100 singles wins at UGA
