Leverage The Reps More In Practice

I wanted to share this practice tip with you weekend warriors and junior players out there.

If there is any stroke or pattern of play, that you haven't developed yet, that means you need to get in more reps during practice.

I had a girl yesterday in Nara, tell me after a lost.

"I practiced the slice backhand approach shot, but I still can't hit it in my matches."

Then I asked her.

"How many reps do you get in a day"?

To which she replied, " Maybe 10 minutes or so".

Well.

HELLO.

That's not nearly enough.

She should be getting tons of reps in every day, until she gets a good FEEL for the backhand slice approach.

Back to you though.

If there is any stroke that you need to develop or haven't developed yet.

Start leveraging the reps more in practice.

If you are getting them in and not seeing any progress in your game, it means you are either doing 2 things wrong.

You are either not making the needed adjustments after every rep or you are not getting enough reps in, in each practice.

So, figure out which one it is and fix it today my friend.

This applies to 90% of the players reading this.

And remember this.

The stroke will start to take shape on it's own while you are doing the reps and adjusting your swing after each one.

Just get out of your own way and allow your unconscious mind, to do the work through YOU!!!

As my first coach would say to me and my teammates.

"When the student is ready, the stroke will apprear".

Why would this tip apply to WWs and Js but not anyone else?

How does one figure this out? What if the student doesn't know what adjustments to make? What if more and more reps aren't accomplishing anything?

This applies to 90% of the players reading this.

Why wouldn't it apply to the other 10%?

The stroke will start to take shape on it's own while you are doing the reps and adjusting your swing after each one.

You contradicted yourself: "adjusting your swing after each one" is a conscious act [unless you can adjust unconsciously; I can't]. But then you write to allow your unconscious mind to work. Which is it?

You couldnt write this stuff any better than it is! The constant cavalcade of freaks from Taiss to Pomo to Collo and now Thomas Daniels never ceases to amaze....

I'll be honest. "put in a ton of reps until the stroke appears" is better than 95% of advice most coaches give you and 99% of MB advice.

And the farther I go down this road, the more simple advice comes back to be useful and takes on deeper meaning.

"Have fun" meant one thing when my daughter was 6 and the two of us were kicking around. It means something much more profound at 10 playing much older kids and having people expect something from her. But the base meaning of it is still the same. And a very deep feeling sentiment.

"Practice a ton and don't get lost too much in the details. Build your shot through reps" is how I interpret the OP. That is very sound advice. And something most people don't do. I highly doubt most people have a grasp of the sheer number of reps it takes to build a true weapon.

Side note. "Keep an even keel" sounds like the simplest advice in the world. And it is. But it's so much more....One of my favs.

I don't think Thomas has an idea of the amount of reps needed to learn world class strokes either. [emoji23] [emoji3] [emoji3] [emoji3]

I don't think it's hard to figure out.
At least 200 every training. At least 250 training sessions a year. Say ten years. 8-18.
Somewhere near 500,000. If the training is really focused and the right things are emphasized.
Per stroke.

Have you read his posts? I don't think he hit 250 balls in his lifetime.

I haven't read much. And I'm not really commenting on him. I saw one earlier where apparently he was trying to sell some ridiculous ebook. And was rightfully catching flak for it.

I just think that simple advice is often the best advice. And gets to deeper truths than alot of the WTA vs ATP FH, ISR,.....you get my point.

How could you forget oserver?
I want nothing more than to forget oserver...

But yeah Thomas seems to be a fan of teaching open grip pancake serves. Dude i am not a coach but damn i find it hard to walk by courts with pancake serves and not do an intervention.

Its an existential crisis really these pancake serves. Like the tennis equivalent of Neitzsce's eternal recurrance when one hits a pancake serve. I know, no one understands Nietzsche...

I'd rather be served pancakes; the double chocolate chip with whipped cream and dulce de leche, for example.

Buckwheat blue berry here with kefir and cinnamon

Could you keep the pancakes down while watching an oserver vid? Think of the reps hes getting when with his serve magically appear? Enough reps and he will have a great serve according to TD!

That ebook has been read by 1000s of players and many coaches are using the playing philosophies in it, dumb Sh&%$T. Start thinking before you comment!!

@pittsburghdad actually went out of his way to NOT criticize you but to agree with what you're saying. And you attack him as if he criticized you. Are you trying to deter anyone from supporting you?

I dunno. Lotta meanderings upchucked to the web purported as knowledge - with knowledge being a relative thing based on who is giving it and who it is intended for. So is this thread and its pearl of wisdom particularly fecund? Well, it depends on who you are. Without getting elitist about it, no matter from how low somebody starts, it’s OK as long as the future direction is up afterwards. Maybe somebody out there got something good outta this. Hey, you never know. If the OP’s intentions were good, nuthin’ wrong with that either.

"I practiced the slice backhand approach shot, but I still can't hit it in my matches."

Then I asked her.

"How many reps do you get in a day"?

To which she replied, " Maybe 10 minutes or so".

I am not fond of the OP’s use of the straw man as a setup to his revealing of the insight and hence the point of writing this thread. That’s just cheap. Any athlete that thinks progress is achieved in 10 minutes isn’t a real person with a functioning mind worthy of anyone learning from their mistakes - how low can you set the bar?

Lotsa junk knowledge on the web. Nothing is as simple as it looks. Everybody gets to figure it out for themselves, if they are so inclined. If you don’t wanna figure it out for yourself, dontworryboudit, threads just like this one abound to fill in the void.

You miss the whole point like most of the clowns on this site, which was" The more reps you get in during practice, the faster you can develop the stroke!!Man, I feel like I'm talking to a bunch of 5 year olds on this site...
