Lindsay Davenport comeback ?

After watching Lindsay beat Mauresmo rather easily yesterday, I was thinking that it's too soon to retire. If she could get fit and move a little better, there's no reason she couldn't dominate the WTA again.

Even though Lindsay is a huge ball striker, I find her classic technique and style beautiful to watch. The motion of her serve and groundstrokes remind one of Chris Evert and Pete Sampras. Her power comes from timing and mechanics, there's no muscling the ball like many of the other big hitters (Williams, Henin, Sharapova, Kuznetsova).

Anyway, looking forward to seeing Lindsay work her way back in form.

Yes, I think it is a mistake that she is retiring. She ended '04 & '05 as the #1 player, had she played more this year she would be at least top 5.

But she wants children more than another slam it seems.

According to reports, Davenport was going to retire at the end of last year. She rethought it though because she wound up finishing the year #1. I think she may fly under the radar at the Open this year in more than one respect. She'll let Agassi have the spotlight with his retirement and she'll make the second week of the tournament without drawing a lot of attention. Then, after she wins/loses her last match, she'll announce her retirement.

She is playing some good ball when she is healthy but she cant get over the hump of winning a grand slam. She seems to lack the mental toughness and self belief to win another slam, what has it been, 6 years or something since her last? Even when she is in position she cant ever close, so that is probably why she is retiring.

Linsey has great technique but i find her game incredibly boring. Her game is to basically crush the ball from the baseline. There not much more to her game. I'd much rather watch a player with poor technique but trying to play a more varied game. (Henin, Mauresemo, Hingis, Kuznetsova ..)

Different strokes for different folks i guess.

I dont find Kuznetsova plays a varied game. She plays just with power like Lindsay, except she muscles the ball alot more to get that huge power, rather then using calmer technique to get it like Lindsay. In fact Lindsay can hit some nice angles too, so she is not only power, Kuznetsova if anything is even more one-dimensional, although Lindsay is not really that complete a player either.

I orginally thought Sharapova would take the Open. But when I saw Davenport take out Mauresmo. I thought Davenport could beat Sharapova. And it's shown.

She shoulda beat her at Wimbledon two years ago.

Davenport is a great, great player--really under-rated, but a lot of that is her fault for being a flake in Slam semis and finals.

I'd love to see her get one more Slam. She can totally do it, with a little help from some of her opponents.

Davenport is going out to Henin in the quarters of the Open. I would be shocked if Henin did not win the Open since her whole year is riding on winning it. I really hope she does too to shut up alot of the people in here who outrageously underrate her abilities(eg-she is weaker then Capriati, LOL!).
