Somehow, I think Venus will win, even though Lindsay has been the steadier player and Venus has played awfully in several matches this year. Venus wins in an upset if Serena is not there. If Serena makes a surprise appearance (I believe she is in the US right now?), Venus will lose.

*******: American tennis was the big winner yesterday at Wimby. The Russian Horde has been stopped for now. Let's hope Serena gets back in shape and does anybody know if JenCap is due back by US Open time? It will be a tri-international battle royale, Rooskies v. Yanks v. ...um, Belgians.

I think Lindsay will give this one all she's got. I hope after the past few slam disappointments (mental vacations) that she'll take advantage of being in a Grand Slam final again.

Venus has been playing really well, but she still has some technical flaws (serve & forehand) that may will creep back into her game against Lindsay.

I think the matchup is an interesting one. If Lindsay is hitting her spots, Venus will be forced to come up with a lot of "special" shots for the match to stay competitive. If she starts missing, Lindsay could run her over. If Venus is playing well enough to counter Lindsay's power consistently by running down balls and hitting angles, Lindsay won't be able to track down nearly enough balls to win the match because she's so darn slow.

Venus is making very much unforced errors. Davenport is moving very bad because of the age. I respect both.

I think Venus will win. 4:6, 6:4, 6:2. In 3 sets.

Not exactly. Remember Venus knows how to beat Lindsay and it wasn't until Venus was in the dumps, that Lindsay gained the upper hand.

I think Venus's strategy agasint Lindsay will be similar to the one she used in their 2001 semifinal, overwhelming force. If her forehand is on, or stronger than it was last year, this will be a running match. Lindsay's movement has been impressive so I can't say Venus will necessarily have the advantage.

I don't really understand specifically what you disagreed with. Lindsay was having injury issues when Venus was beating her. She's now healthy and in better shape.

Even though Lindsay is moving better than in the past, she's still one of the slowest players on the women's tour, IMO. Venus has the edge on movement by far. Lindsay doesn't even try to run down some of the balls that Venus gets to.

Go Davenport...I can't wait to hear the stupid comments out of Richard Williams mouth after you beat Venus...

Lindsay has pretty much had her way with Venus lately, now would be the time for Venus to put that to Retirement and regain her championship runs.

You are probably right, but Venus should be looking to get into the net, anyways. Her forehand has looked just good enough so far, but it has been historically unreliable and Lindsay has been approaching the net MUCH more than she used to. At the very least, Venus should enter the match with a mindset to attack the net should that forehand falter and she cannot sustain long rallies with Lindsay. Actually, Lindsay might be doing her a favour by trying to shorten the points.
Venus does move better, but that isn't quite as important on grass as it is on clay or hard court. A slight edge to Venus on that one.

Venus is playing much better in this wimbledon obviously. But she has been playing the best I've seen, after the Sharapova match. Her serve isn't that big a factor in the last two games. She's making her first serve percentage real high, so I don't expect it to suddenly dip in the Finals. She has a defensive game, and Davenport doesn't.

Davenport is getting old, she's still a great player, but even if both players are at their best, Venus will come out winning. She erased all my doubts of her skills in her match against Sharapova. She's back in tennis hopefully, with her playing doubles and singles competitively. This should be a great match.

I hope lindsey destroys her, I can't stomach venus twirling around on centre court smiling and waving and after she wins matches. If she only knew how much of an idiot she looks like when she is doing this!

Venus Williams.

This was difficult, though. I'd like someone with Davenport's class to be rewarded ... and I'd like Venus' "comeback" to be complete.

This is what I was disagreeing with. Lindsay's strategy is to hit to Venus's forehand. Venus usually counters (when herforehand was working) by hitting up the line. Lindsay would hits a weak return allowing Venus to come in and finish the point at net.

After their 3-set classic at BOWC last year, Venus used this strategy to perfection the following week and raced to a 5-0 lead before getting injured.

Her forehand has looked just good enough so far, but it has been historically unreliable and Lindsay has been approaching the net MUCH more than she used to.

True, in addition to hitting to the forehand I expect Lindsay will try to take the net away, the way Venus used to do to her back in 2001 (Acura Classic stands out). In the 2004 BOWC, Lindsay approached the net down break point in the crucial third set. It was rare, but I expect to see more of it tomorrow.

I think the winner will be whoever can handle the pressure better. It's a great story that a veteren like Lindsay and a semi-veteren like Venus are in the final. The more interesting part is that Lindsay hasn't won a slam in over 5 years and Venus in almost 4 years. I'm rooting for Venus. If Venus wins the 1st set, then she'll win. But things shall become interesting if Davenport can pull out the 1st set. If there's an edge in intangibles, it belongs to Venus, because she is a terrific fighter. Davenport tends to get down on herself;however, she willed herself through the Mauresmo match, down a set and 3-1 and later down a break again with Mauresmo serving at 4-3!!

I personaly feel the Mauresmo-Davenport semi was much higher quality than the vastly overrated Venus-Maria semi. So after watching yesterday I think Lindsay should win. However Davenport has been a clunker in big matches of late, she almost gave away the Wimbledon semi vs Sharapova, U.S open semi vs Kuznetsova, and AO final with Serena; with a big lead in all three. I dont know, it depends on Davenport's nerves, she has the power to break down Venus's forehand, there is no doubt she hits the ball harder than Sharapova, and returns and serves better than Pierce. She doesnt move nearly as well as Venus though so she had better be hitting extremely well. I will go with Lindsay in 3 sets.

Harder groundstrokes than Sharapova? I think they're about the same. Maybe Lindsay hits slightly harder, but not by much. Sharapova does go for more extreme shots han Davenport, though.

What she and I know and you don't is that we fans with cameras appreciate this behaviour very much. Fan-friendly players (Agassi, Sharapova, etc.) do the very same thing. So, you see, instead of her being ignorant, you now know that this very popular player is very aware of and accommodating to the fans in this respect. More players have been doing this in recent years, some photography people I know say that many agents tell their players to do that now. If you look for them, some photo sites have pictures of her and other players posted, they don't look like idiots. Pictures of the victors turn out to be VERY flattering, actually (ok, maybe not boxing or somesuch!). People flush with victory tend to look very attractive, anybody who has done sports photography will tell you that.

I've always hated the "beauty pageant hand wave" and twirl move. Now she's even added that stupid fakey "I love you" gesture to her repertroire.

I don't mind Venus at all, but she looks like a jacka$$ when she wins a match. Sharapova's post-win routine isn't much better....

What's wrong with that. Almost all of the marque players, men and women, do the exact same thing!

I think its endearing actually, when Venus or any other player does it.

I think you've hit my feelings as well KK. I'll be happy if either player wins, and I find it difficult to root just for one or the other. Davenport deserves also because she's getting towards the end of her career.

I'm hoping for Lindsay but if Venus plays like she did against Maria it will be short match.
lindsay's older and this could be her last chance. I'll go out on a limb and say an American will win.

I dont know why people think if Venus plays the same as she did against Maria, Lindsay will be that much easier. Is Maria automaticaly better then Lindsay because she beat her in the Wimbledon semis last year? Had it not been for the rain delay, Lindsay would have crushed Maria in straights in last years semis, and probably been last years Champion. Lindsay beat Maria 6-0, 6-0 earlier this year. I dont know if Lindsay will win tommorow, but I fully expect the final to be even closer than the semis.

Because prior to last year, when Venus was in the dumps, Venus owned her. And based on her play throughout the tournament Venus has been playing like her old dominating form. And, had Maruesmo not been a choker she would've beaten Lindsay. Also, Maria hits the same flat deep shots Lindsay does.

I personaly feel the Mauresmo-Davenport semi was much higher quality than the vastly overrated Venus-Maria semi. So after watching yesterday I think Lindsay should win.

True, Lindsay has won her last three matches against Venus and fully expects to beat her again tomorrow. She could very well pull it off. Also true that the Davenport/Mauresmo semi was cleaner, the same way those Graf/Vicario matches were clean, Amelie is a moonballer.

Well, Venus conquered Maria yesterday. An opponent that she has never even taken a set off yet (although they did play in Hong Kong in January 04 Exhibition tournament with Venus winning). Venus has Lindsay the last time they played at Amelia Island. Up 6-1 and a 15-40 chance to serve for it, but choked. That was on clay. I think it would be a great story for women's tennis whoever wins. But what is more interesting is that Venus and Lindsay have recently became closer friends. Lindsay will not play Fed Cup if Venus doesn't. Not to mention, they have a Fed Cup tie against Russia following Wimbledon! Perhaps this could decide who plays no.1 singles? LOL.

You are joking arent you, Venus and Lindsay friends, LOL! I always thought of certain pairings who could not stand one another. Serena's was Jen. Martina's was Amelie. Venus's was clearly Lindsay. Maria's is every other Russian it seems.

Venus.

Just like with Dementieva, nobody on the tour is taking advantage of Venus' week 2nd serve. I hope for Lindsay and the WTA's sake she can win, but I expect this will be the 22nd!! consecutive GS not won by the world's current #1 player.

Go Lindsay!

Lindsay will take this in 3 sets. It has been proven that she has been the hardest, smartest and most consistent player throughout this tournament. Venus will give her a run but if Davenport plays like she did against Clijsters and stays calm, hits the crap out of the weak second serve and finishes a ton of points at net, she will take this away from Venus. Venus will try and move her around but Lindsay proved she has increased in speed (think about the Clijsters match!!!). She was hitting winners on the run. Lindsay is confident especially after her semifinal match against Mauresmo. Lindsay is going to win her fourth slam here!!!

I'm rooting for davenport. I hate watching venus win .. she does that thing with her hands, dances around, and has a big smile that is really annoying... I remember when she beat hingis, she was all prancing around the courts doing a dance, and hingis looked at venus like.. "hmm okay"

Combine Venus' pirouette with Richards' victory dance on the cabin and you have the new show "Fiddling Venus on the Roof" a ballet in 3 acts.
