2002 US Open 4R - El Aynaoui def. Ferreira - 36 75 75 76 - 2:14 AM

I stayed until the end of several but I wanted to mention this one because it is up there with my favorite in person matches.

I think it was the last match to go that day just pushing the envelope on when they'll let a match start. It was one of the those great USO days that happen (used to, F.U. Ashe roof) because the schedule was backed up from rain delays earlier in the tournament. I'm pretty sure it took place on old court 6 (several iterations ago). I have a good memory for this type of trivia. ;)

A small, but very vocal crowd stayed until the end. There was a bit of us (pro El Aynaoui) verse them (pro Ferreira) cheering going on. It really was one of those classic USO matches. Late, a small field court. Most people were long gone. The diehards staying on for the last drop of tennis. I also remember Brian Early came out to watch toward the latter part. I guess he isn't allowed to leave until the last match finishes. Or else he's just as into it as the diehards.

The following year El Aynaoui IMO entered USO historical stardom certainly among the diehards. It isn't measured by career rankings or results in general or at USO. You get by laying it all out on the court at the USO. His R3 match against Jiri Novak (old Grandstand court) was an absolute classic.

I was there for his final USO match as well. Verse Paradorn S. Out in straights. :(

Very interesting list, thanks to OP!

I was always interested in it as well, because somehow I like these kind of matches. I only knew about the Hewitt vs Baghdatis match being the latest, but it is nice to see all the others now.

However, I am very surprised how many best of 3 matches are in the list (many even near the top). They must have started way after midnight in many cases.

First time that 2 matches finish after 2 AM at a year's US Open. Also, Nadal's 4th match on the list, the most among all players, and with a perfect 4-0 record as well.

2019 Davis Cup Italy-US tie ended at 4:04 AM

The U.S. failed to advance despite beating Italy 2-1 after a doubles match that ended past 4 a.m. local time in Madrid, the second-latest finish in tennis history.

Sam Querrey and Jack Sock won the decisive doubles match 7-6 (4), 6-7 (2), 6-4 against Simone Bolelli and Fabio Fognini, but it wasn't enough to secure the Americans in the quarterfinals as one of the two-best second-place finishers from the six groups.

The doubles match ended 4:04 a.m. in the Spanish capital (10:04 p.m. ET, 0304 GMT), the latest finish in U.S. Davis Cup history and second in tennis history behind Lleyton Hewitt's victory over Marcos Baghdatis at the 2008 Australian Open -- that one ended past 4:30 a.m. local time.

What in the ever loving FFffffppppffft???? I mean as you an see the Best of Five set matches is what you might expect. One of the USOs I think in 2016 there was a Karlovic match that ended past 2am and it was ridiculous because a lot of matches got pushed back by rain. But they are all best of five. I don't understand how best of threes can run so damn late, regardless of the freaking rain. It's stupidity at its finest. You know that with a shorter format you're better off starting the following day instead of piling it on so damn late. Had to look up why that Davis Cup match went so late and think it's nutty. But freaking Mexico why????? And it was a first day R1 match to boot. No reason it couldn't have gone on in the morning. Bonkers.

Actually one of their best songs. People just don't get raves man.

The OP hasn't posted since September, so here's a link with exact time for whenever he returns.

Finishing at 4:05 a.m., just two hours from daybreak in Melbourne, the former World No. 1 rallied past home favourite Thanasi Kokkinakis 4-6, 6-7(4), 7-6(5), 6-3, 7-5, advancing after five hours and 45 minutes in the longest match of his career. Murray withstood 102 winners, including 37 aces, from the South Australian.

@vbranis here's another one for the list:

March 16, 1987 – In a match completed at 2:35 am, Victor Pecci of Paraguay defeats Aaron Krickstein 6-2, 8-6, 9-7 to give Paraguay a startling 3-2 upset of the United States in the Davis Cup first round in Asuncion, Paraguay.

The article also says this, if you want to do more digging: A comprehensive list of all of the latest finishing matches in tennis history can be found in the book “The Bud Collins History of Tennis”

Hewitt vs. Baghdatis at the 2008 Australian Open comes to mind immediately. They didn't get on court until about 11:50pm, apparently because one of the Williams sisters refused to switch to another court. By the time that Hewitt won in 5 sets, it was 4:34am. The match was nicknamed "the dawn showdown".

I blame the feminists. The Bencic match started at 7 in prime time. Nobody wanted to watch that. Same as the Hewitt Bagdhatis match was preceded by a women's match that nobody cared about. The WTA should be grateful for the equal prizemoney but get out of the way of the scheduling.
