Murray is #1 in the world, and the least declined of the 4. Rafa barely won 15 matches off clay this year, if at all, and he's not coming back to win 3 1000 and higher HC tournaments. Federer is gonna be 10 years beyond his peak and is not winning MC and Rome, never mind Tokyo, at 39. Djokovic has one unrealistic shot at Tokyo, and still has to win Cinci, which seems far away now that he's seemingly declining.

Murray is getting the best results on his career right now, and is the only one that is likely to improve on previous best results.
Crazy how quickly things change..

Now Murray is the most declined of the 4.

Nadal has 0 chance of making another 1000 final on a hard court and may not even qualify for London, I don't think it's likely. Same for Fed on clay.

I don't think you should count OG as it only occurs so infrequently. Unfair on Novak and Fed to have a go at them for not winning on the 3 occasions each that they played.

If you disregard OG I think Murray and Djokovic both have chances. Djokovic is obviously finished as dominant #1 but he's hardly out of contention anywhere. If Murray can stretch his domination for another few months he could wrap up most of his missing title quite fast. Winning AO and one of the missing 1000's this year is definitely feasible. Then if he can somehow pull off the French this year and possibly sneak a cheeky post-prime IW/MC in 2018... He's done it.

Nadal has zero chance of making another HC 1000 final? What do you think about this now? LOL

Nadal:
  • World tour finals
  • Miami Open
  • Paris Open

Djokovic:
  • Olympic Gold
Murray:
  • Australian Open
  • French Open
  • Indian Wells

Nadal can win Miami and Shanghai. Paris and WTF at the end of season would be tough. Will WTF be moved to clay?
Murray can maybe win IW and AO. FO is unlikely though.
Novak still has an outside chance to win the gold medal.

As has become the norm, Djokovic is the one who is closest to plugging that last hole in his resumé. He is still only 1 title away. 2020 is very doable for him as he will still only be 33 by the time Tokyo comes around, younger than the other 3 (even a week younger than Murray). Federer, who will then be 39, can safely be counted out. Nadal at 34 still a possibility. Murray is a gigantic question mark given the uncertainty over his ability to return to form. I feel that Djokovic will be super motivated to make good in Tokyo like he just did in Cincinnati, the more so as he will realise that 2020 will probably be his last realistic chance of nailing that title (by the time 2024 comes around, he will be as old as Federer is now ). History has shown that when Djokovic sets his sights on something, he will it achieve it sooner or later.

I also think 2020 Olympics will a major goal of Novak's although no ATP points are awarded for Olympics anymore.

Don’t see how Murray ever wins any of those unfortunately.

Thanxs for adding Shanghai bro. Rafa fans count Madrid, making substitution on Shanghai. With that in mind, everyone who won Madrid or Hamburg don't have problems on counting MASTERS that his favs players don't won it! Also, TMC on China was never won it by Nadal.

Djokovic won't care about ranking points, he just wants that Olympic singles gold medal. Then he will truly have accomplished everything there is to accomplish in tennis.

I hope he does win the gold at Tokyo. But that would majorly depend on his condition next year. If he plays 2019 tactically by skipping a few tournaments like Rafa and Roger have done recently, he will definitely be in good shape to actually achieve it.That includes concentrating on GS's obviously.

If he were still playing like it is 2016 I would have been cautiously confident about his chances. But sadly he isn't.

Neither is likely, but Murray is the likeliest.

Federer is too old to win clay masters, let alone 2020 singles OG.
Nadal is too declined to win indoor masters/yec, since he was always at his weakest indoors.
Djokovic is the closest, but has only one chance in 2020 to win OG, because by 2024 he'll be too old.
Murray needs more than others, but he is currently primed to dominate for a while. If he manages to extend his peak into 2017, he may tick off the requirements quickly.
Now it feels like he was in that position way more than 3 years ago...

Please add Hamburg to djokos list. Dont tell he never played it. He played it 3 times. If you count madrid in place of hamburg then a madrid title in place of shanghai should count

What's this "counting other tournaments in the same slot" nonsense? Rafa hasn't won the Miami, Shanghai, Paris Masters or the ATP Finals as of today, Wednesday 21 October 2020.

Until a player wins a particular tournament at a particular venue, he hasn't won it.

Nadal has won Madrid when it was the 8th Masters. Shanghai replaced Madrid as the 8th Masters that should be the equivalent. Right now only Miami, Paris and WTF as the major Titles Nadal has not won.

Looks like Nadal can do the set, followed by Djokovic then Murray. Fed is out of contention for clay masters and I don't think he will win Single OG.

Pardon. Who remove what? is it up to me? :-D

I don't care about taking sides.
Players have won what they won, but Nadal has not won the present-day Shanghai Masters tournament.
And by your logic, Djokovic hasn't won the 'present-day' Miami since it moved from Key Biscayne to Hard Rock stadium in 2019.

You stated that "Until a player wins a particular tournament at a particular venue, he hasn't won it". Using that rationale, only Federer can claim having won Miami.

Masters throughout the years have undergone changes and replacements. ATP will just establish the EQUIVALENT tournaments from past MASTERS series equivalent. Whether they are called ATP 1000 or Super 9.
Currently Novak has won ALL, Nadal have Paris and Miami, Federer has Rome and Monte Carlo. Got it?

Nadal won the Madrid Masters when it was an indoor hc court event.

The Shangai Masters is an outdoor hc event.

They're not even quite equivalent tournaments.

Now, my point is, Nadal has not won the present-day Shanghai Masters tournament as the calendar stands today, not talking about past events from years ago. He's been in previous Shanghai finals and hasn't won it.

To date, he's not on the list of past winners because he has not won the Shanghai Masters. Got it?

Refer to that link, Smart Guy. It says Rafa has 7/9 STRIKE RATE. Got it? Set your FACTS straight unless your FACTS are BETTER.

Of the CURRENT big events missing from Big 4's resumé:

Murray lacks 4: AO, RG, IW, MC.
Nadal lacks 4: WTF, Miami, Shanghai, Paris.
Federer lacks 3: MC, Rome, OSG.
Djokovic lacks 1: OSG.

I know what the link says, but who cares about old tournaments like the Madrid Masters in 2005 for instance? This discussion is about current events for me and not about events not even played today.

Shanghai outdoors is a different tournament from Madrid.

As of the official ATP tour calendar played this day today in 2020, Rafa has not won the Miami Masters, the Shanghai Masters, the Paris Masters or the ATP Finals. Facts. Sorry if you have trouble dealing with them.

Regarding the current Madrid Masters today, its played on clay.
Rafa is missing the Miami, Shanghai and Paris Masters from his trophy haul. Plus the ATP Finals.

Terrible take. So if the ATP moved the Shanghai Masters to another location on indoor hard we'd now say Djokovic was missing a Masters?

Right. If ATP did not change Hamburg to Madrid Clay and Madrid Indoors to Shanghai, we would not have this discussion. Masters are designated 1st-9th. Now if we will TAKE that argument, Novak has not won HAMBURG and Madrid Indoors. Actually their Take is lame and stupid.

No.

Djokovic has won all the different Masters there are to win at this point. He completed the set and that doesn't change

If the ATP moved the Shanghai Masters to another location on indoor hard, that would be beyond Novak's control.

Ok, Daniel. :)

Let me explain the way I'm looking at it.

The difference between Novak and Rafa regarding the Masters titles is: Novak has won every Masters title available in the calendar. He completed the Masters set. That can't be taken away from him.

Rafa hasn't.
He hasn't completed the Masters set. He won the Madrid Masters in the autumn slot years ago when it was an indoor hard court tournament.
The Shanghai Masters is an outdoors hard court event, so they're not even quite equivalent imo. I personally don't regard Rafa winning the Madrid Masters indoors years ago as the same thing/equivalent as winning in Shanghai outdoors. It's a different event.

In addition, the Shanghai Masters has been held since 2009, iirc, a fair amount of time, over 10 years, so in Nadal's prime years, he hasn't won it. He's been in the final twice and lost. It's not like he hasn't had chances. Aren't a lot of people calling him outright GOAT now? Let's have high standards for him then.

He also hasn't won Miami, or Paris, but he might win this upcoming 2020 Paris event as I believe he's entered it.

What I meant is that both Madrid and Paris are indoors (I think), so we could swap one for the other IMO.
As for the rest I agree we can't swap it for Shanghai, from my perspective he has won one indoor masters tournament in the end of the year and that shouldn't change because the atp changed the place where the tournament is held (I would apply this same logic to slams). Are the weather conditions too different comparing Madrid to Paris?

So for me, Nadal needs to win one of the autumn outdoor tournaments and Miami, and the WTF.
