List of rackets that can be capped/ capping guide

My caps should come delivered to my door with the next 41 minutes. My grommets and strings are taken out of my lm radical mp and I'm really excited to cap it.

I just posted this today in another thread. I figured it should go in here also:

I used the customization worksheet to do this one time. To simulate the addition of the CAP, I added the following:

*4 grams @ 18 inches
*4 grams @ 15.75 inches
*4 grams @ 20.25 inches

The swingweight on my racquet increased by ~12. (343.60 to 355.57)

So does this mean 12 grams (.4 ounces) is how much more the cap grommet weighs compared to the regular grommet?

Do I just add 12 to my swingweight if I'm capping my LM Radical?

Yes, CAP grommets weigh about 12 grams more than regular grommets.

IIRC, Radical grommets are approximately 18g... Prestige CAP grommets are approximately 30g.

Ok so wihout heating it up anything, I literally got every single grommet but 4 on top in the holes in 25 seconds. So how long should I put the grommett in the microwave?

hi, just bought iPrestige MP XL grommets, and they weren't the CAPs. They were regular bumpers and strips, like the old Trisys 260. Is that right?

I'm not sure if it's exactly the same. Trisys 300 has 102 sq in head but says midplus. The normal grommet is just brown strip with bumper guard on top.

So you can't cap this racket?

Is it possible to cap prestige tour 300? (660 cm^2 head).

Which grommets will fit?

FXP Prestige Team or MG Prestige Team CAPs will fit the 102 sq. in. Prestige with the 18x19 pattern.

Here you go...

wow i want to do that to mine. so what grommets are these? and how much lighter/more HL would that make my MGMP's?

would teflon grommets like on the radicals work for the prestige too?

thanks

no you cannot cap the rap pros or the microgel radical pros
head sizes are 100 with 16x19 string pattern there are no caps that are 100 sq inches

for anyone interested you can use the new teflon grommets from the youtek radical series and stick them in the older versions of the radicals, the white grommets with black strings look pretty sick

could you by any chance... cap a microgel extreme? Obviouslt there would need to be some work done to make it fit? It is only off by 2 sq. inches...

I think it's about time to make a definitive list of rackets that can use the Head Prestige CAP grommets, because there are tons of threads that tell what can be capped but no thread that has a list of all the rackets that can use the grommets. (i'll get some pics later)

so to start off what are cap grommets?

They are the bumper guard used in the Head Prestige Line of rackets
they aid in full racket head protection, they do add a little bit more weight to the racket head as opposed to regular grommets.

How do you install cap grommets?

Materials:
CAP grommets
Awl
Heat gun/blow dryer/ hot water (optional)
*you can use a heat gun/blow dryer or hot water to somewhat ease the process by making the grommets more soft and flexible

Here are 2 ways to install caps:

Capping version 1. To install CAPs start at the shoulder. 5T and 6T grommets are the longest and will need to be inserted FIRST. CAPs will finish easily at the 12 o'clock. I also recommend that you use Scotch tape to tape down the CAPs to the frame as you move upward. This method will keep the CAPs from popping back out as you seat more and more grommets into the holes.
*kudos to psp2 for this

Capping version 2. So heat up a cap strip (optional) and start from the top (12 o clock position) and push the grommets through the grommet holes, use the awl to help push them into place, just do this until you get all of the grommets in the holes, if you need to use some kind of easy to remove tape at the top after you get the first grommets in so that they stay in place better

Which rackets can be capped?

well there are few rackets that can use the prestige cap grommets, they are mainly in the Head radical series

this is the list of Midplus rackets that can use the midplus prestige grommets, you can use either the liquidmetal, microgel, i.prestige, or flexpoint prestige MP grommets, i find that the i.prestige grommets are the hardest to install, the other ones are pretty simple though

Head Microgel Radical MP
Head Liquidmetal Radical MP
Head flexpoint Radical MP (uses the head Flexpoint Prestige MP grommets)
Head Intelligence i.Radical MP
Head titanium ti.Radical MP
Head Radical tour/trisys 260/bumblebee MP
Head twintube radical tour MP
Head Pro tour 260/630

Head Graphite professional
Spalding atp tour stock 200
Head Elite Pro
Head Elektra Pro
Head Tour 600
Head Club Pro
Head Magnum Pro
Head Comp Pro
Head Team Pro

Head Pro lite tour

Non head:
the Volkl Tour 10 Generation II can be capped with little modification
instructions and pictures of how to cap the racket are located in the link before

FOR ANYONE INTERESTED:
you can use the new teflon grommets from the youtek radical series and stick them in the older versions of the radicals

there are probably other rackets that i don't know of so please inform if i missed something
NOTE: The T-fight cannot be capped without adjustment to the caps, thank you to Gimmick experimenting for us

Sorry if this is already covered but i don't have the time to read all posts.
If i cap a YouTek Radical MP and put a leather grip and 2 overgrips will it be enough to keep the same balance? Or what will it be (in mm please)?
Also what will the overall weight (in kg please) be in this case?

It should be very close... additional weight will be approximately 1 oz. Both mods add an additional 0.5 oz. at nearly opposite ends of the stick.

Beware though... you'll probably like it alot more :)

I suppose we are talking for one heavy stick to swing. What would the SW be on that thing?

Not as much as you may think... most of the weight is being added from 3/9 downward toward the throat. The Radical already has a full headguard.

I play with the Head Liquidmetal radical midplus and was wondering where you buy these racquet caps?
Are they called "Grommets" or something else.

Capping a MG Radical? I'd like to try and maybe use a leather grip

MG Radical MP CAP'd specs:

Weighted with lead and leather... 340gs, 6pts HL.

MG Prestige: 348gs, 8ptsHL.

How much lead?

oh yeah... items used to pull this off...

straight awl - making sure grommets guide into the holes

small flat head screw driver - help press the grommet into place through the narrow CAP slit

vasoline - helped with some of the nasty grommets, especially with the tie off (larger ones)

grinder awl (file or sand paper) - cleared the way of any burs or hole defects

microwave - to heat up CAP, made more pliable

(i did not need these items, but just in case i have used some scrap string to loop through two holes and pull the grommet through, then hold the loop in place with my speed clamp, keeping pressure down on the bumper/grommet)

and also needed, brute strength. again, my fingers are killing me, but definitely worth it and not difficult to do... just have to take your time... grommets can bend and break easy.

for the MG Radical MP i used the CAP for a MG Prestige MP... the CAP size/spacing (besides the beam width) is very, very close.

How long did you microwave for?

what's your address...:)

i will take better pics next stringing... there are two grommets i'm not to happy with, they could be better. (the ones up through the shoulder)...

i can't wait to hit with it!

What happened to them?

Other q's:
-I've heard that some of the individual grommets don't full get through the frame, so some people have salvaged a couple of the original MG rad grommets to use instead. Did yours reach all the way through?
-What type of leather did you use?
-Was the capped and leaded/leather radical softer and/or better than the Prestige?

I'm curious because the MG Rad had a really nice soft feel, but just too light.

^^^ sorry bro, didn't see this post... next time shoot me off an email :)

how much lead... the lead was added to the handle under the leather grip. i will have to go back and research exactly what i used (or break down what a stock MG Rad specs are and go with my add-ons for an approximation).

microwave... i do this for some grommet replacements, but definitely for CAPS... at least heat them, microwaving is easy and quick... start with about 10 seconds on high. take it out, it won't be hot so you can handle it... see how it feels, if it's still stiff, go for another 20 seconds and that usually does the trick... makes it a little pliable... i will be replacing CAPS this weekend, we'll see if i need to microwave any.

i sold those sticks! but damn did they play really nice!

grommets not making it... they will, TAKE YOUR TIME don't do anything stupid (like forcing a grommet etc.)... with the grommets near the yolk/shoulder/throat area it's a little tricky for this set up. it takes some muscle, and i used some scrap string to help pull things along (also used some Vaseline, different awls and a small flat head screw driver to help push through the CAP opening to get the grommet as far as possible).

leather... i use Babolat leather for almost everything, sometimes Head Calfskin... for this project it was Babolat (stretched and trimmed)

the Rad in this case became a beast in a good way. it possessed a ton of pop, decent control, felt more solid than stock. the swing weight jumped up a bit. this Rad played like a soft feeling iPrestige MP. solid, but softer.

i noted somewhere, that the day i hit with this stick in the pics i was playing in a round robin style club event. my last opponent during our warm up snapped his strings. he was playing a Yonex then pulled out a Dunlop to replace it, took a few hits with the Dunlop then reached in his bag and pulled out an APDC. I told him to stop and hit with the Rad in my bag and he loved it so much i made him one... the one in the pics i sold through the boards... btw the my opponent beat me 7-5, 6-2... i learned my lesson... :)

No problem, thanks for the reply :D

I remember buying an N95 from you (for my cousin) and the grip feels pretty small. I'm guessing the head calfskin caused that? I just put TW 1.3 mm leather on mine, and the grip size feels the same. Would you say the head leather is pretty thin?

I don't know if it is considered thin but I know babolat leather is definately thicker by a pretty good amount. I played with them on my psl gts and when priority one customized my sticks i had them put head calfskin on and it definately feels a whole thinner. I can feel the bevels a whole lot more.

tru dat... the Calfskin is thinner and softer than Babolat ... and the width is thinner.

Head Tour leather? not sure never tried it.

I do remember the N95... nice stick! :)

Are you going to CAP a Radical?

If I can get my hands on an MG rad, loved the flex of that stick, did not love the light weight.

mg rads are pretty easy to find and not that expensive :)

Yea, but i'm only 16 and most of my transactions have to go through my parents. I've got the cash (personally, i'm not rich, just birthday money savings). I'd love to get another racquet to play with (my dream is a prestige classic 600!!!!), and i've had my eye on three frames (PB10 mid, MG Prestige mid, and the MG rad mp as of late) to mess around with and if I liked them I would switch.

But......i just got another AG100 for my birthday yesterday, and if I were to switch, that's 100 bucks gone. I could always trade, but i'd want to know what i'm getting into first :D
