I dunno, the CV 18x20 is growing on me. It is very comfortable for my elbow and the closed string pattern helps keep the ball in play, it isn’t perfect, nothing is. Plus it is going to be a little cheaper now with a new one coming out,

Yep, I did it on mine. And you could probably use the old green insert from your ‘15 without having to put all new grommets. Also, you can lol to see if you can make the black insert work. Sometimes a hair dryer or heat gun works wonders.
I would love to see a picture or walkthrough.Even the 2 grommets side by side would help.

Any help guys ? Or can somebody confirm that I can use grommets from Blade CV 2017 on my blade 2015?

Thank you !!
I have. The only thing you need to use is the green top insert from the 2015. Everything else fits. The bottom bridge grommets are a little snug, but go in fine with a tap from a rubber mallet or just press them in and the string tension will snug them up.

Thank you ! However I purchased a blade where there are absolutely no grommets at all... Also I am not sure which green top insert you are talking about since I can't see them... Do you think I can still use grommets from the 2017 cv version or I absolutely need this green top insert ? Do you know a place or a website where I could buy this green top insert ?

Thank you

I'm testing the upcoming new blade 16/19 right now and i have to say it is the best racquet I've played this year, including new radical and upcoming new pure strike. Very close to my first gen pure strike, with a bit more power. Spin is not as good as my first gen pure strikes and the feel is not as clear but way better than last blade with CV. and the new blade is surely more comfortable than pure strikes. Swingweight is a bit high though. The one in my hand has 333SW.

If you have a 2015 Blade 16x19 (with the green grommets/ headguard), the top 8 main string holes of the grommet are an insert that fits into the headguard grommet. So if you pulled the grommets off, the headguard would have a space in the top that the insert for the 8 mains would fit in (that's the best way I can describe it). If you purchase the CV grommets, the insert is black and the string spacing is only slightly different. You can probably get it to work on the 2015 with a hairdryer/ heat gun, or you could use a Dremel tool to widen the holes. I opted for the Dremel tool.

Thank you very much ! This is very clear now ! :)

Can anyone explain to me the color differences in the 2015 version? Some are a bright green and there’s some that have a more minty green color? Were they made in different batches or something?

There are two paint jobs for the 2015 Blade. The shiny paintjob which is bring green is for the 16x19 model and the minty green is for the 18x20. I have been using the same racquets for the past 4 years and UV has literally made my 18x20 Blades look so faded. I can actually tell which racquet has been used the most due to how light the color looks.

If you plan to use the green insert, you won't necessarily have to buy new green grommets, you could just used the existing insert (since the holes don't get widened/ flared from use or stringing) and only get the CV 16x19 grommets.
I wonder what Mackie MacDonald did when he used his '15 Blade 16x19 when he played at UCLA, since he had black grommets?. He then used a CV pj in the pros.

Anyone have any recommendations for a slightly "softer version of a 16x19 blade?" I'm currently using the 2015, love everything about it but it a little stiffer than I'd prefer. Maybe something in the 62 range. I was using a Pure Storm Team GT (leaded up to Blade specs) but need just a little bit more power out of the racquet. Tried the 104 blades, power and feel was great, but didn't like how cumbersome it felt as a 104.

Easy answer is the blade v7? I have used the CV blade and hated it. Thought it felt too cumbersome/head heavy

The CV felt sluggish at the same SW as the 2015 model and lacked feel so most of us coming from the 2015 stayed with that model. I should be able to provide some insight once I hit the courts with the new Blade v7. What string were you using in your 2015 Blade?

After 4 hours of hitting between the new Blade v7 18x20 and 2015 18x20, the jury is still out on which one is better which is a good sign unlike the Blade CV which I didn't like after hitting with it for an hour.

Initial thoughts is that it is going to depend on what you are looking for. The Blade v7 and 2015 model play slightly different and it may come down to preference as which is one you prefer. For me, I still need more time to figure out which racquet works best. I can't really go wrong with either one and each racquet has strong points and weak areas as well so it's just splitting hairs at the moment.

The Blade v7 feels like a Head PT 630 but with a bigger sweetspot. It hits the same type of ball. I am not saying it is the PT 630 as there is nothing like it but for a retail racquet, it comes close. I like the feel more than the 2015 model which says a lot about this racquet since the 2015 is pretty good.

Forehand of both slices and topspin were better on the v7 model but backhand slice and topspin favor the 2015 model. Perhaps I need more time to adjust to the new racquet.

On volleys, the v7 model was more solid and stable.

For those with two handed backhands, you will be happy with the new v7 model. It has better ergonomics with the throat not digging into your top hand when using a two handed backhand. But I struggled hitting my two handed backhands and slices weren't as low or penetrating.

I had both racquets strung up at 48lbs mains/44lbs crosses using Hawk Touch 17g.

If you have any questions, ask away.

Forever Blade!

I have been using Signum Pro and Volkl Cyclone 18L. Sounds like your review is pro V7, how were the serves?

used two different tensions and it seems the blade likes 53, which i hate to say because I usually like higher T. OHBH is probably the most fun of any racquet, i think someone else said that. I really like it. I have a TT310 tour in 18x20 a 2014 PS in 2014 and while this not that feeling of the 15 blade, i specify feeling vs feel, because you feel the ball you dont get that pinging that the 2015 gives you.

I recently got 2 blade 98S to string from a client and after stringing them I wanted to test them out. Read up on them, compared models from 2013, 2015, and 2017 and decided to purchase the 16x19 2015 version. Hopefully I'll fall in love with it like everyone else. Will be following this thread.

I currently play the yonex duel G310.

Question to all Blade pro's. It's hard to find a second 2015 blade 16x19 on the market right now, find more 18x20 though. Has anyone tried to string an 18x20 wilson blade as a 16x19, and does it play similarly ? thanks

I guess you talking about leaving off the 2 outside mains and a top or bottom on the cross? You could certainly try it. Maybe guess is that it won’t play much differently. The string pattern is pretty uniform on these, so I can’t think of another way to string it, where you wouldn’t have large gaps.

I gave myself 3 hitting sessions with a 2013-14 16x19 before rendering a verdict...and know I understand why you guys enjoy the blade so much !! I love the way I'm able to slice my backhand now, it stays very low. The 2015 is being delivered, so I can't wait to try that one as well, the feedback from the forum suggets it's the best in the series before the v7 came out. I'm totally sold on it, so much so I'm thinking of selling my duel G.

Yep, I like this one (BLX black and silver) the best. I wasn’t impressed with the Clash technology. Grommets are getting a little hard to find though.

No. The 2015+ Blades switched to parallel drilling so these grommets won’t fit the older versions.
It’s just the middle main strings that are a little off. I’m not sure if the parallel drilling affects it. Either, the 2015 is pretty similar to the ‘13, so you could just find these racquets. Here’s the part number for ‘13 grommets WRT71620U.

The parallel drilling does affect it. A customer gave me six.one 95 16/18 grommets for the parallel drilled version to install in the six.one blx 95 16/18 non-parallel drilled version and they definitely did not fit. I tried.

Okay I guess it does. I have green grommets on my 2013 right now (the guy sent me the wrong ones) and the only holes I had troubles with were the mains in the throat (8 I think).

I took out the throat grommet piece of a 2013 and compared it to an 2015 piece. The 2015 grommets appear to be thicker.

Yeah. It was the center holes that would not fit. I’m sure if I cut the individual grommets off of the strip, they would fit.

Alright, hit two hours with the 2015 Blade 16x19. Comparing to the 2013 version, the 2015 has a more mute feeling. Not sure which one I prefer more, going to hit with both tomorrow and switch after an hour to compare which one is better.

About the grommets, the 2015 version I bought came with black grommets (2013) on the head and throat, and green grommets on the side.

What is the consensus on stringing the 2015 Blade 18x20? String, gauge, and tension. I'm going to try Hyper G 17 (1.20m) at 50 lbs.

I found hyper g 17 to work perfectly perfectly with this frame. Probably the best string for any 18 x 20 pattern in my opinion.

I would recommend not using a shock absorber to have more feel and feedback. Still extremely comfortable, and I have a history of shoulder issues.

I took your advice and played the 2015 without my dampener and the vibrations were minimal, I continued playing without one.

I was going to buy a reel of hyper G as well, but not a full bed though, needs to find a good cross to go with it.

Anyone still rocking the 2013 Blade as their main? I just bought a brand new 18x20 online and can’t wait to get it. Stunned at the 2HL. Definitely slapping a leather grip on it.

I’m gonna try 4G on it but will l likely revert to Hyper G 1.20.
