If you work USTA stuff, well yes, the pay isn't very good. I work almost exclusively college tennis, and I have no complaints with the compensation. Of course, the level of expectations for quality officiating is higher. It is getting more and more difficult to find enough qualified ones. And, I know that in my area, some college requests for officials go unfilled.

I'd say it's been ten years since I last worked a USTA event. Not looking to ever do it again.

But before you can become an umpire for college matches, you have to work up from the lower junior and adult tournaments.
