This will be the thread of the mighty Texas Longhorns tennis program. (mens mainly). Also known as the Shamehorn tennis thread. Remember when Texas was in the national title vs UGA and could have won? I would forgive you if you didn;t because now we are a shadow of that team. We have fallen hard. Now a team in the 10-15 range each year and this year will go even firthur south.

Looking at the 2012 upcoming year I see no cause for optimism.

It;s time for Center to go. We have regressed heavily. I warned back then not to recruit Ben Chen. i know he was a Texas boy but I saw his results. he loses to mediocre players all the time. got double bagaled by Blake Davis last year. Sitaram has been a bust. Olesen is ok but a plyer than should be playign for Texas Tech not Texas.

Meanwhile A&M, baylor get better and now Oklahoma is much better than us. We are the 4th best team in out conference now.

But still this thread will be for anyone wanting to discuss the Longhorn tennis team. We will root for them to do well despite the unlikely event that they will be succesful.

Ben Chen. is a good player. He beat Marcos Horny of Baylor. That is a great win.

I also want to see Texas recruit more players from India and South Korea. There are some great players out there that wantst to study in USA. This if done right, could make Texas top 5 team in the nation in 2 years or so.

Why India and South Korea? I don't care where they come from we just need more quality. Texas has good players but Center stays in state too much. Those players are good for filling the bottom of the line-up but not the whole line-up. If we don't get Shave Vinsant, Center should be fired on the spot.

He should also look at transfers like Diaz does. Get Idan Mark from Tulane, Andre Dome from Cal Poly and Enej Bonin of Denver.

But we need a top ace. Vinsant could give us that.

Other than Manny Diaz, NCAA coaches know that you cannot recruit other teams' players.

Besides, some guys (like Andre Dome) go to a second-tier school so they can get more scholarship money. You seem to be assuming that a top player at a second-tier school is a good candidate for leaving. Texas might have a hard time offering enough scholarship money to get this kind of player.

Look at what Indian connection has done for Virginia. They became #1 soon after they started to recruit actively from there. but undiscovered country is South Korea. There are ton of Young talented players that play davis cup for S korea. and many of those guys want to come to USA and study abroad and speaks Good English already.
I don't mean recruit the entire team,,,just 3-4 more guys from Indian and Korea combined. This will make Texas not only top 5,,,could make them #1 in just 2-3 years time.:)

hard to imagine a south korean or an indian enjoying the austin, tx life over a San Francisco or LA lifestyle..

Taiwan as well has some young talented players that would probably like to come to the US and play tennis while studying at a University. But I would expect an up and coming team( like an Oregon) to unlock that market rather than a team like Texas.

not really. they have the Spanish connection. Verdasco's cousin played there.

I think you are being harsh on some of your players. You are underrating the quality of them. But this does look to be a down year coming up for the Longhorns

I wonder if they were banking on having Jack Sock to help with the "transition year". I'm not sure if Jean Andersen going pro was expected (maybe it was eligibility stuff cuz i think he is 22 now??). If you had them at the top 2 and then w/ the supporting cast, i think they would be Top 5-7 team.

I was kind of sad to see Kellen Damico to have the kind of college career that he did. He had some good early Freshman results but kind of dropped afterwards.

I agree that they really need either Shane Vinsant or Mitchell Krueger. Anyone know where they are considering???

I'm a little surprised that there are only 8 guys on the roster right now, but I heard someone is coming in after the semester break. Did Mladenov turn pro or just leave the program, I think they were hoping he would be another Kutrovsky but it didn't happen I guess. Losing Andersen definitely hurt, especially when you lose Corrie and Damico at the same time. Center is s good coach, he gets the job done.

Careful with my username there ;)
As an A&M grad, here's my take on Texas tennis.
You have a bunch of mid to bottom of the lineup players on the roster. No foreigners to fill in the top spots like previous years. Anderson leaves early I guess, Vlasko transfers and Sitaram is just not very good. You crap out on your foreign recruits and bad things happen.

Whitehead
Sitaram
Chen
Olesen
Hilliard
Holiner

Is that the lineup? It doesn't look good. 4th in the conference would be a great result. You'll lose to Tech for sure. Should be a battle w/ Nebraska for 5th. 30-40 rank in the country.

But surely there is some help coming in at mid-year?

I know that there have been Koreans doing well in 12s & 14s recently. Is there a pipeline of 19 y/o Koreans going to other universities & making an impact?

& regarding India....UT used their one (& only) scholarship last year for an Indian (from India) who was a bust. With probably 20% of all SuperChamps in TX being second generation Indian (& 40% total being second generation Asian)....like Chen.....not sure why the bevos need to go abroad.

Wouldn't it just be easier to tell the top 10 Indian & Asian SCMZ 8th graders to repeat a grade if we wanted 19 or 20 y/o freshman Asians (who are older & tougher than their 18 y/o counterparts & just as tough as any 19 y/o from India or S. Korea)?

Ever been to Austin?

& fwiw......40% of my kid's HS is Asian.

So what is it about a "San Francisco lifestyle" that would attract a tennis athlete. ;)

Ben "bicycle" Chen gets beat by Ed Corrie 6-0 6-0. This is a sad result. Corrie playing well out of school. Corrie was a weak #1 last year even at 2 he lost a lot. But he can still whip his former teammates:confused:. Olesen almost beat Zavala, which is somewhat encouraging. But Olesen should be playing 5 or 6 but because of our weak line-up he will play over his head at 3.

After seeing his behavior on-court against Tulsa in the NCAA team tourney, I wasn't AS heartbroken. He was just too immature as far as I could tell.

Shane is likely going to A&M, Mitchell is being heavily romanced by OU, A&M, & TCU.

Texas does have Korinek in a year.

Slightly off topic, A&M has a very promising team...Ore, Winthrow are excellent additions.

Texas was devastated when Sock turned pro, they were seriously after him.

Yeah, A&M looks very strong, although Ore did lose to Soren Hess-Olesen at ITA regionals.

Michael Redlicki and Shane Vinsant have Texas on their "list" on tennis recruiting, but i believe Mike is a Duke Commit now..... and Shane i would be surprised if he didn't go to A&M.

Texas needs another Stud to play 1 or 2. They could be pretty good next yr w/ players at 3-6 with Swayland, Whitehead, Korinek, Soren... I don't know much about Naumann but i heard his game has gotten a lot stronger, hence his ranking improvements..

Vinsant quote after signing with A&M when aksed about the switch to SEC.

"I think seven of the top 10 schools are SEC right now in tennis."

um... false. Is that what the recruiters told him?

Georgia and Kentucky will be top 10 this year. After those two, there will be some marginal top 20/maybe #9 or #10 schools like Florida and Ole Miss. I really cannot see the SEC getting more than 3 schools into the final top 10 this year.
