Longhorn Tennis

Kind of perplexed by the line up. As much as siem and Jonah can be up and down , I feel like u have to play either if healthy. Siem had a solid doubles win at 1 today too

Lost the doubles point again.
What’s the story with Woldeab being in and out of singles lineup - I know injuries have been a notable part of his career, but, any specific injury he’s struggling with that makes dubs more manageable than singles?

I’m sticking with my Texas pre-tournie prediction

Texas going to take 1,3,6

and one of the Braswells is going to clinch

Shouldn’t have come down to that Ct. Gorzny’s just the better player. Was looking for Spiz to deliver. He came back for his fifth year explicitly to win it all and should have finished it. Oh well.

Yes I agree, the loss by Spizzirri was unexpected but I suspect that he just didn't have anything left. I feel like that doubles lineup wasn't the best either.

Felt like Coach BB put out a suboptimal lineup. Can't argue with the top 3 of Spizz, Micah, and GA, but after that, a lot of head-scratching/second guessing. PY beat Maxted, but how healthy and match fit was PY? I thought Jonah wasn't ready for the moment, so maybe Cleeve was the better play there with Lucas at 6...

What do you Longhorn fans make of the last few years?

Very good seasons and teams but did not capture a 2nd national title despite maybe being the favorite the last two years. Are you a bit disappointed to not capitalize on this window with at least more natty?

I suspect similar to how UF fans felt two years ago in 2022 as they watched a whole bunch of guys graduate after a missed opportunity, ie

awesome that they won one, as it's not easy at all to do...but could have won 2-3 (the year Texas won their title they beat UF in the semis, in a match where UF's Andrade-Vale had two match points to more or less win the dubs point with #1 dubs being abandoned with UF sitting on 3 match points...I still believe this flipped dubs point would have led to a UF victory...then two years later when UF had their perhaps best ever team trying to go back-to-back they were a little flat and ran into a hungrier buzzsaw of a UVA team in the quarters)

but, always celebrate the one you can get, as you're always only a couple points (sometimes one point), or a single injury, away from not getting it at all...as many teams like tOSU can attest to

not to speak for our Texas fans, but I think UF and Texas are very similar in this regard over the last 5ish years...got 1, could have had 0 or 3...but if you asked me if I'd be willing to flip a coin to get to 2/3 but also risk dropping to 0...no way I'm flipping that coin

I'm pretty disappointed in this years result, mostly because I think UT really should have won it. Last year I think UVA was the better team though.

Definitely a strange decision, also weird how everyone says he's "from Austin" when he was only here for a few years before college.

still seems too soon to be promoting him already. at least they didn't put 2024 ncaa team champ on there. freshman of the Yeah lol

almost forgot but congrats to P Stearns. That's big win for her over Kasatkina to make it to the 3rd round of French Open. Her next match is against the young russian Andreeva.

The rich get richer. Texas tennis is a role model for other programs on how to recruit and how to sustain success. There’s rarely a dip in roster quality. On the contrary there’s a seamless transition to the next group of players that can keep them title contenders.

Gorzny supposedly received $115k in NIL for signing. Not sure that makes Texas a role model, but being able to throw around that kind of money certainly makes it easier for them to maintain roster quality.

They are playing by the new rules. A lot of traditionalists pine for the past but we have to live in the present. NIL is reality. Other big football schools should be setting aside finances to attract quality athletes to their non revenue sports. Am pretty sure they will. And if they don’t they won’t be the ones being held up as examples to follow.

FYI. Speaking with a player transferring for his 5th yr and could play just about anywhere. His experience is the private schools don’t come close to the publics when comparing NIL $’s.

Not surprising. I’d also say almost without exception athletic facilities and amenities at public schools are way better than at private schools.

I'm not so sure about this. Texas's NIL program, at least for tennis, seems to be underdeveloped. I know a few of the guys on the team and they seemed to indicate they got basically nothing in terms of NIL. Additionally, he never really opened up his recruitment and only focused on Texas. My belief is that he is going to Texas on a full ride now

True, especially at public schools that are not contenders. At P5 schools that are not contending for conference and NCAA titles, often there are little reason for good players to go there. Most good players want to practice and play with people who will make them better because they want to maximize their pro aspirations. I know of multiple players from mid-majors who would be at best line 6 or 7 had they transferred to a top 5 schools, but instead, took a full ride and 10k+ to be at lower tier P5

They have so many holes to fill, I would be really surprised if they are a top 5 program next season. Does anyone know if the Bailly brothers are coming back ?

The info came from a very widely-known figure in college tennis. Not sure where they got it from.

On a separate-but-related note: if a state resident goes to state school on a full ride, does that count as a full scholarship (of the 4.5) for the coach, even though it's a lot less money than it would have been if the player had been from out of state?

My understanding in TN is the student can add academic aid to the partial sports scholarship, but the coach/athletic program can’t influence any academic aide. Student has to get it on their own. May vary state to state .

Yes. But at Texas, where Alston money is prevalent, the player wouldn't need 100% to be on a full scholarship equivalent. Rather, the player might only need 75% if the 5,900 from Alston will cover the remaining 25%
