Looking for some points to improve (video inside)

I've played with a buddy of mine yesterday and we decided to film some of our practice hitting and our 2 sets. Unfortunately my buddy really sprays the ball all over the court, so I didn't get nearly as much footage as I wanted to. The video contains a collection of some of the practice hitting and some of the match.

Tennis Video

I ended up winning the match 6-0 6-0 btw.

I dunno, man. Looking at that video, it seems like you should be giving people here tips for improvement instead of the other way around.

Pretty much. But the opponent wasn't really good; against an higher level opponent it may not look that loopsided. The video indeed makes him look great.
Although I think there could be some tweaks on his service motion (high elbow at trophy pose+not high/straight enough left arm). What is ironic is that there's still lots of juice on that serve anyway... And sometimes he looks late on his forehand too. If it's because the prep' is late or because the incoming ball is slow, I can't honestly tell.

Little to be said indeed. However I'm eager to see you hit against a better opponent... with a better camera angle too. If you try to fix it to the fence or something it'd be nice.

I agree he is a nice ball striker, but in the vid it appears he is very loose with his targeting. Hard to say from video like this, but seems he is more focused on his swing than where the ball goes. Not all a bad thing, but as you progress to his level of hitting skill, putting it in the right area is key. As for technique, he is good enough that it would be better to be with him in person to help or get better video/conditions as you mention.

You seem like a really solid player and you hit a lot of really sick slices. I did notice though that you tend to hold onto your racket with both hands (kinda like holding it at the beginning stage of a backswing) as you run up to the net to chase down drop shots and otherwise short shots. I used to do that too. Most people don't realize that if you just hold the racket in one hand and free up your arms, you'll be able to cover a lot more distance.

That Fh is pretty nice, but that Bh is sweeeet. Is it as strong a shot for you as it looks in this short vid? I agree the slices are very nice as well.

You look great! Your technique is very similar to mine, only you do most stuff much better than me. If I could take from your game one thing (to make my own better), it would be the way you bend your knees. I try SO HARD to bend my knees on EVERY SHOT. But, every time I record myself, my legs are basically straight.

It's one of the most frustrating things, really. I spend so much time practicing bending my knees, but it's like I "feel" like I'm bending them, but I'm not really.

Real nice stuff. I'm liking the all court game and that nice combination of relaxation and aggression. Now what I'd really like to see is you playing someone your level since this seems almost too easy. :)

nice hitting, love your stroke forehand/backhand.

but i did notice that you play tennis standing high, thus making you struggle to get balls that are hit wide away form you. play a little low and you'll be able to push off either leg to chase down those balls.

Nice hitting.
You bh slice looks nice and appears it would be able to hold up under repeated attack.
Lots of good shots in there.
Base looks a little narrow at times.
It was a good watch. Thx for posting.

he is probably feeding his opponent to make it a rally. if he would play closer to the sidelines his opponent would probably hit everything out making it a boring match for him.

we would need to see him against a better opponent to judge him but the video looks good.

First of all thanks for the nice comments everyone. I think playing a "weak" opponent makes me look good one the one hand, because I'm not under a lot of pressure and get enough time to hit my shots. On the other hand, I don't get a lot of opportunities to build points and that is one thing I'm usually pretty good at, so that's something that doesn't really show in this vid. This friday I'm playing a match against a player that's way closer to my level and I'll ask him if he doesn't mind me recording the match. If not, I'll post it here.

Nice vid Buffster, what's your forehand grip?, your friend needs to hit a better rally ball.
I think it's semi western, but I'm not really sure to be honest. Might lean toward western as well?

I agree on the service motion, it's still work in progress. Until a year ago my serve was my weakest stroke BY FAR, double faulting a lot and not really being able to do much with it. I agree on using the left arm more though and same goes for using the legs. Another good point you make is about my forehand. I don't think I'm late when I get a ball with normal or high pace, but sometimes I'm to passive with my movement when a slow ball comes to my forehand. Something I'm working on as well.

I actually think my placement is pretty good, but considering the level of my opponent, I try not to go for the corners too much.

Very interesting point! Never really focussed on what you're saying here. I will rewatch the vid and see if I recognize what you're saying.

Backhand slice is my steady stroke, that I hardly ever miss with and can actually attack with pretty good as well. Double handed is good when I receive medium/fast paced balls, but less good with slow balls.

It's really tough and something you'll just have to keep focussing on during practice. I'm still working on it myself, because my kneebending could be much better as well.

I'll play a better opponent this friday, hope I can record that match.

Totally agree, I'm way to stiff as well. I should actually do some regular stretching or yoga, but I'm too lazy.

Nice hitting.

Thanks and yeah my base should be wider, something I'll need to continue to focus on.

True, I was feeding him quite a bit.

Ideally that's what it should look like. Click to enlarge.

Right elbow in line with the shoulders (highlighter with a red line), left arm raised and fully extended. Don't think too much about the legs. I took Serena because you seem to have a pinpoint stance and she has a good serve.

Good stuff Buffster. I think u could improve moving in more aggressive on short balls. Seems u reach and end up with a lower contact point on short balls rather than attacking with feet. Maybe u were taking it easy on ur weaker opponent as some else has mentioned.

Looking good, will keep that in mind.

Cant say anything bad. But I sure do like how you keep your feet moving all the time, never caught flat footed.
Thanks

Your friend is very slap happy :)
I know :)

That's actually a weakness of mine. Will be working on that.

You hit great.
On serve, most coach's would lower your elbow on the trophy position, to allow more swing before impact, resulting in more spin and or more speed in the serves.
On movement, it's possibly hard for you to play seriously, so you do start out leaning towards where you need to run before the feet get going. A wider, more balanced stance would give you quicker starts and recovery.
As the match progressed, there became less and less need for you to run, so you do look more balanced.

Butter-smooth effect on the serve.

I take it the balls weren't bouncing very high because it was so cold out there.

You look like a very good player.
