Lorenzo Musetti - The True Crown Prince of Tennis - A 1HBH-er?

Earlier on Sunday, in third-round action at the Masters Series 1000 tournament in Miami, Lorenzo Musetti scored a three-set win over Felix Auger Aliassime. The Italian is the no. 16 seed, and the Canadian no. 18, and there wasn't much to choose between them in the first set, which went to FAA in the tenth game after one break. After that, however, Musetti raised his level and dropped only five games in the last two sets. The final score was 4-6, 6-2- 6-3.

In his next match Musetti will face the no.4 seed, Novak Djokovic, for a place in the quarter-finals. The Serb currently leads their head-to-head 7-1.

Prime Musetti was once again humiliated by a nearly 38-year-old Djokovic.
Vergogna!

A real battle of wills earlier on Friday on the main court at the Monte Carlo Masters 1000 tournament where no. 13 seed Lorenzo Musetti took on the no. 6 seed, Stefanos Tsitspas, for a place in the semi-finals. The Greek player ran away with the first set, taking it 6-1 with some typically swashbuckling play.

In the second set Tsitsipas saved two break points to hold to 1-all and had Musetti 0-40 on his serve in the next game, but the Italian, showing great character, held to 2-1 and then broke through on the Tsitsipas serve for the first time to lead 3-1. However, Tsitsipas broke back immediately before Musetti took the Greek player’s serve for a second time to lead 4-2 and then held to love for 5-2. In the ninth game Musetti served out to 15 to take the second set 6-3.

In the final set Musetti, demonstrating great self-belief and skill, saved four break points at 1-2, and at 3-all broke through on the Tsitsipas serve at 30. Both players held serve to 5-4, when Musetti, with admirable coolness, served out to 15 for a memorable 1-6, 6-3, 6-4 victory. In the match as a whole Musetti got 74% of his first serves in and saved 14 of 17 break points. In the semi-final he will face Alex de Minaur; their head-to-head is currently 1-1.

Lorenzo Musetti's strength of character was on display again on Saturday afternoon in Monte Carlo as he took on Alex de Minaur for a place in the final. As in his semi-final against Stefanos Tsitsipas, the Italian lost the first set 1-6, but won the second to force a decider. In that final set Musetti led 5-3 with a break and served for the match at 5-4, but went down 0-40 and was broken to 15 as the Australian leveled the score at 5-all.

Almost inevitably the match ended on a tiebreak in which de Minaur led 2-0 before Musetti won seven of the last nine points for a memorable 1-6. 6-4, 7-6(4) win in 2 hours, 40 minutes. In tomorrow's final Musetti will face Carlos Alcaraz, who currently leads their head-to-head 3-1.

Very close, but needs a win tomorrow in the final to replace de Minaur at #7 ATP.

Nah, he just doesn't have two things pretty much everyone who is great has - a solid serve and forehand. Funny how the stroke that never seems to let him down is the one-hander. He's an odd duck, that Moose, but his backhand is much better than Dimitrov's.

Musetti was impressive on the clay this week and has demonstrated good pedigree on the surface in the past. He won the bronze medal on the surface at the Paris Olympics last season, defeated Novak Djokovic in Monte-Carlo in 2023 and lifted the title at the ATP 500 in Hamburg in 2022.

Now, the Italian is excited to tackle the rest of the European clay swing.

“Clay is my favourite surface. It's my natural habitat. This week gave me the confidence to be more ambitious even in bigger tournaments like this one or Roland Garros," Musetti said. "It's a massive point of the season. [It is] really important, I don't have so many points to defend. So hopefully I can be prepared to do some great things. I feel like I have the level to stay at the top on clay.”

Retired from Barcelona (thigh).

Bummer. Heal quickly, Lorenzo.

When was the last time two Italian men were ranked in the ATP Top 10 at the same time? As things stand, this rare occurrence is likely to happen again after the Masters Series 1000 tournament in Madrid, where Lorenzo Musetti reached the third round earlier on Saturday by beating the Argentine Tomas Martin Etcheverry 7-6(3), 6-2. Following his recent good form, Musetti is set to move up to no. 9 when the new ATP singles rankings are issued after the Madrid tournament. However, this will probably also depend on how well he and the players nearest him in the rankings do in Madrid in the coming days.

Seeded no. 10, Musetti will face Stefanos Tsitsipas, the no. 17 seed, for a place in the fourth round. The Greek player currently leads their head-to-head 5-1, but the Italian beat him for the first time in a memorable quarter-final in Monte Carlo a few weeks ago. Musetti pulled out of last week's tournament in Barcelona due to a thigh injury he suffered in the final in Monte Carlo, where he was beaten by Carlos Alcaraz.

An excellent performance from Lorenzo Musetti against Stefanos Tsitsipas in third-round action in Madrid on Tuesday afternoon. The Italian came from 0-3 and 3-5 down in the first set to win it 7-5, saving a set point at 4-5 along the way. In the second set Musetti had four break points at 4-all, including three in a row at 0-40, and another break point at 5-all, but could not convert any of them. However, in the tiebreak that ended the match he went ahead by 6 points to 0 before taking it by 7 points to 3 for a 7-5, 7-6(3) victory. On Wednesday Musetti will face Alex De Minaur for a place in the quarter-finals. The Italian leads their head-to-head 2-1, and beat the Australian in a memorable semi-final match in Monte Carlo earlier this month.

I hope Musetti is going to go deep here being a part of the ever elusive and shrinking pool of the 1 HBHs.

In a match that began late on Wednesday night and ended at half past midnight on Thursday morning Lorenzo Musetti beat Alex De Minaur 6-4, 6-2 to advance to the quarter-finals in Madrid. The Australian was out of form and made a total of 27 unforced errors during the course of the match. At the same time Musetti was both solid and forceful on the clay. He was also never threatened on serve while constantly putting De Minaur under pressure on his delivery. In the last eight Musetti will take on a lucky loser, the Canadian Gabriel Diallo, for the first time.

This is a huge, huge win for Musetti considering the scalps De Minaur has collected recently. He beat Shapo in straights and at MC he double-bageled Dimitrov.

So there is an obvious difference between Lorenzo and the other pretty 1HBH merchants at the top of the game.

Not only is it a huge scalp, it's a huge opportunity. He gets Diallo next....and if he wins that, the winner of Draper-Arnaldi.

He is really improving match by match and going from strength to strength. Mentally, he is much tougher now.

Perfectly said. It's always going to feel unsustainable because he's so mercurial on court, but what he's building is undeniable at this point. Starting to see more and more of him on Tennis Channel's linear network and his star power is waxing. And why not? He's one of the best looking dudes on tour, has an artistic but brutal game, and has a subdued manner that contrasts with all the cringey stuff young players are doing when they win a point.

That is one of the things I appreciate about him. I'm so sick of all the screaming and fist pumping. It's ruining the game for me. What do people think his chances are against Draper. I've never watched the latter.

Lorenzo got criticized quite a lot after his celebrating against young Nardi in quite a ridiculous fashion back in MC 2023. Thankfully, he has matured and is cussing himself a lot less.

On paper, Draper is the worst matchup so far. Great form and great 52-weeks stats. In the thin air of Madrid, his serve can be deadly, and Jack's heavy lefty forehand against the elegant oney has some shades of Nadal vs. Federer. His all-court craft could take advantage of the Tuscan's deep position.

Hopefully, for Lorenzo, his slices and drop shots also work out. Needs to get Draper moving - a lot. Heavy balls and variations of all sorts should help.

lol he has no weapons.

He has all of the weapons, it's his play style. He can clock serves over 130mph on clay. His forehand is heavy and a big weapon. His backhand is what he needs it to be. He can go big with it, or play it safe. He also has a very good return game, which many with a 1hbh often suffer from. He's also talented at net.

He reminds me of Borg where he can go from clay to grass and his worst surface is hard.

I don't think anyone is picking him over Jack D Raper. Jack just won a Masters and Lorenzo has yet to do that

I to the top 8 if he holds on vs. Diallo.

I'm delighted to score a new contribution related to live rankings in favor of this sympathetic artist of the game, whose only somewhat negative personal character trait as seen by some of the people dealing with him professionally on the tennis side seems to be his exaggerated modesty.

Yes, as charismatic as he is, this fellow does not seem to be or tend to be a Lorenzo di Medici, Il Magnifico redivivus yet (yes, if ever) or employ the means of “Il Principe” by Niccolo Machiavelli.

I hope you’re not having a seizure and seek some medical help

Yes, a comfortable 6-4, 6-3 win for Lorenzo Musetti against lucky loser Gabriel Diallo in the quarter-finals in Madrid on Thursday. On Friday evening the Italian will take on Jack Draper for a place in the final. The young Englishman has been in excellent form and currently leads his head-to-head with Musetti 3-0, so the Italian will have to come up with something special if he is to reach another final.

I think Musetti needs to be a little more aggressive in certain parts of his matches, he keeps looping the ball waiting for an opening, he needs to create the openings.

I agree, but I'm not sure attacking is in his nature. Maybe he'll surprise us.
