Losing her first slam final was good for haleps career

Many people said a new slam winner would bring some fresh air into the WTA and that certainly would be true.

however for her career I think that is a good thing. We have seen it countless times: a halfway cute girl wins some tournaments and all of a sudden she thinks she is a super model or fashion designer and concentrates more on glamour parties, getting your own fashion collection, going to talk shows and do commercials and modelling.

and all of a sudden she has made a lot of money but her tennis goes down the toilet.

examples:

ana ivanovic: won her first slam final at age 20 and then did nothing else

petra kvitova: won her first slam final and is still a solid player but seems to have lost some drive plus she is (was?) dating the worm:)

-wozniacki: did not win a slam but became a huge commercial star, almost married a top golfer and now is doing nothing.

sharapova also took some time to win more after her first slam and was of course the biggest commercial celeb ever but unlike the other girls she was able to get back to hard work and focus on tennis rather than being a wannabe model/fashion designer/actress/singer:).

By losing her first slam final halep got a great lesson that she has to work even harder and success is not coming easily. might help her career in the end. don't get me wrong, doing so´me commercials to make some extra money is good but they need to make tennis their first focus and not act like anyone would care for their modelling or fashion designing if they were not tennis players (yes they are cute, but there are 10.000s of eastern european semi-pro models who look better and make some very meager wages for their jobs).

Time will tell. I certainly agree that her losing is not the end of the world and that she has a bright future ahead of her.

The only caveat I’d put out there is that young players often don’t appreciate how potentially rare the opportunity to play in a slam final is.

So, while there are, as you point out, examples of young players who weren’t prepared for what came after winning that first slam, there are also young players who never made it back to a slam final after losing one.

Not if she never reaches another final.

She seems like a hard worker and I agree that in the long run it will probably make her hungrier and, when the time comes, more grateful.

Sad news for you, Kvitova and Stepanek broke up.

that's why I asked "was?".

of course there is a Chance that she never makes a final again but then she does not deserve it anyway. I think that loss will make her work harder and maybe prevent her from being a wannabe model/Fashion designer/celebrity and keeps her Focus on Tennis.

Meh, personally I think Halep is overrated. We will see what happens but there are other younger talents I am more excited about who I think may go further.

You can't really make these comparisons. One could say that winning your first slam final could give you confidence to win more straight away.

yeah halep, what about her one day winning a slam or two

Not sure. I think when she comes up against the bigger power hitters like Sharapova or Serena she has little chance. I think they would have to lose early in order for her to win a slam.

I dont think so. She will anyway earn money (it doesnt matter if she won the final or not). These player make more through sponsors , so i think she certainly missed an opportunity to win a slam.

No matter how positive you want to say about being a runner-up, but I personally would rather win a slam for the first time. Being a runner-up can be devastating too. Many players never reached the slam final again.

she certainly may become the "breath of fresh air" on the tennis court but the "supermodel" talk certainly should be left out of this discussion.

she's a much better tennis player than a looker and i do hope her career is grand, best of luck to her as the WTA is better for it.

Losing is never good.

And Halep is not that good looking. You can't really compare her in that department to Ivanovic, Sharapova or Wozniacki.

She is not good looking at all imo. Ivanovic and Sharapova are in a whole other class.
