Losing to a girl

Yesterday a female friend of mine challenged me to one set of tennis. It was a hot, humid and windy day, horrible for tennis therefore, my stategy was to play deep, use a lot of top spin and force errors. I felt good, despite the conditions, and was expecting to beat her easily.

We get on the court and began to practice and notice how clean her strokes are and how fast and muscular she is (for a girl) and began to get nervous. I ask her how long she's been playing and she says 9 months, 3 months shorter than I. Luckily, she is off at the begining and I break her serve. However, from there on she plays just incredible. Every point she runs across the baseline in graceful intervals and never misses. Her serve is consistent and effective. Her volleying is superb and she took advantage of every second serve of mine.

She wins the set 6-2 and every game, save for one, went to duece and many of them lasted over 15 minutes. By the end of the set (it lasted one and a half hours) I'm beat, I'm barely able to walk. She, on the other hand, shows no sign of fatigue. She is barely sweating.

So should I be embarrased? Has anyone else ever loss to an attractive (very to be honest) girl? And furthermore, does her out lasting me say more about my physical condition or hers?

Damn man, you should have kept that to yourself, haha jk.

It depends on how much of an age difference between you guys, maybe she plays other sports and just has a higher endurance than you. I assume she wasn't overpowering you or anything.

Is this another one of your crazy acid stories? Is she the same girl you saw on the beach? And also, you just got straight whipped. She probably takes lessons from a pro who taught her how to Kick You A**!

Sounds like you are. Should you be? Well, given it's the 1920s and we know women are still clearly an inferior species and all :/

No, no-one else in history has ever been beaten by an attractive girl. You're the first, hang your head in shame. It'll no doubt be international news tomorrow....

And furthermore, does her out lasting me say more about my physical condition or hers?

Is she an international marathon runner? A world-famous cross-country skier? Nope and nope? Looks like it's you who needs to get your butt to the gym...

Seriously? Get over it. So you played a better tennis player, who happens to be fitter than you are too. You lost. Bound to happen.... Who gives a rats-butt if that person happens to be of the "pees sitting down" half of our species?

Now serious, it looks like you are playing against a better player. Make her one of your regular tennis buddies if I were you.

Meh I wouldn't think to much of it. At lower levels(9 months of playing) its easy for a girl to be better than a guy.

I've seen some of the D1 girls here at UB play and I bet they could kick my arse although it might be close.

yea but seriously dont play girls haha

you win... you just beat a girl, do you feel like man now?
you lose... you just got beat by a girl haha

Is it not widely understood that men are more competitive than women in tennis across similar levels??? I realize that in many athletic events there will be women who can compete evenly or perhaps even beat men, but tennis is not one of them. Do you think anyone in the top ten of women's tennis could regularly beat men in the lower 100's? I mean, I know this sounds sexist, but...

Our coach once had the worst men's player on our D3 team play the #1 singles of the girl's team (a very good team!). She got rolled 6-2 6-2. No competition.

Solution for living down your embarassing loss... well, SF had a good idea....

I don't see how someone who has been playing for 9 months can play the way you describe. But you should be embarassed. But today I lost to a 70 year old 6-1 6-1. I'm only a strong 3.0 in men's, but the only girls that can beat me have to be at least a top 3.5 to 4.0 player.

I have! And she appreciated it, though. She knew something wasn't right when I was serving 40 mph 1st serves and 15 mph 2nd serves.

She had no complains about using a 15 oz racquet, though. She earned my respect. And she was cute as hell.

Two years later, nothing happened with this girls. I barely get to talk to her anymore. she moved away :(

A few months ago I was playing this girl. She won the toss and served first, and I immediately broke her at love to take the lead 1-0.......
Two hours later, she won 6-2, 6-0. :-(
Every other game went to deuce, and I lost every one of them. I went home and immediately cut out the strings. ;-)

Yup. But here we were clearly talking about a girl that was at a different (better) level than the guy. Simple.

To be blunt, the red bit's crap. There are women who can beat men of a lesser standard, which is clearly what happened to the OP, he was beaten by a better player, the sex of that player didn't matter.

The blue bit has been discussed endlessly on these boards, and is irrelevant to this particular thread.

Both bits don't address my comment that you were replying to anyways - my comment focused on the 'embarrassment' that the OP felt, which I was pointing out was stupid.

to answer your question op, "should i be embarassed?"

the answer is you bet your ass you should be. in fact if i was you, i'd be hitting the practice court as soon as possible

Agreed. I didn't convey my thoughts properly, and misunderstood your original post. Nothing wrong with losing to a better player, regardless of their sex.

that girl must be in fantastic shape. I played with good women players before but they all had problem when I moved the ball from side to side.

Every player on the WTA is better than you are. Most of the female div 1 college players are probably better than you are too.

Feel better now?

Yes she is. She says she goes to the gym two hours a day and based on the size of her biceps I would say she is not lying.

A better sign of fitness would be someone who goes to the gym for 20-30 minutes.

2 hours isn't going to do much for you in terms of tennis conditioning (well, weights maybe.)

I would gladly play anybody who can beat me male or female. I just haven't come across very high level females at the clubs I go to. I have played some 4.5 rated females and think they would lose to average 4.0 males. 5.0+ females are either highly ranked juniors or college players it seems.

tsk tsk. there are two main apparent reasons why you lost. it's common courtesy to always ask an attractive muscular hitting accomplice A) how much she bench presses, & B) her cell phone number, before you start playing. unsufficient knowledge of these crucial facts led to your subconsciousness bombarding your mind with overexaggerations of her muscularity and attractiveness. these subtle messages blocked out information the rest of your body was sending you on how tired and thirsty you were, and that led to your inevitable defeat. she indirectly used her sex appeal and gained a huge psychological advantage. she was a worthy opponent. and would you mind giving me her name, perhaps?

I do not contribue my loss to my subconscious lust for her. My ego, unfortunately at times, is large and I do anything in my power to prove my superiority even when dealing with attractive girls. The reason I lost the match, the set, is a balance between my subpar athletism and her above par athletism. If a guy with similar attributes were to play me the result would be the same.

As for your last sentence, why do you want to know her name? Save for the little bits I disclose on this fourm, you know little about me. Making it an odd request. But if you must know her name is Mary.

I don't see why you should be complaining. So you lost to an attractive female. Just consider that she plays tennis with you. She could play with many other people. I just go with what SF suggested, tackle football. And if she's stronger than you, even better. Ever got tackled by an attractive female? Now that's something worth bragging!

I lost to a nice looking girl in high school & it had a pretty profound effect on me. decades later it still enters my consciousness. better get some good therapy now (like the caveman kid in the GEICO commercial).

I would definitely be embarassed :p. I played with a 14-15 top player in the school holidays. Had a long warm up and she was a lot more consistent than me and often outpowered some of my shots. Then we played a set and I won 6-0. I had no idea it was going to be like that, but in a match it seemed as if she had lost all that warm up power against my game..

Losing to this girl doesn't sound like a problem to me. It sounds like the beginning of a beautiful relationship. . .Beating you probably gave her a good ego boost. Ask her to play again and she will, since playing with you makes her feel good about herself. Maybe she'll even start thinking, "Hey, if I, Mary the tennis hottie, am better than this guy at tennis, what else am I better than him at?" . . .and we all know there's only one way to find out the answer to that question. . .(cue cheesy loud jazz music)

Should you be embarrassed. Uh, YEAH! You didn't just "lose" to her, she kicked you butt royally! Plus, sounds like she could easily have played a couple more sets and you're pooped after just 8 games!

Not only did you embarrass yourself, you embarrassed ALL men. You didn't even have the common decensy to fall down and fake a cramp or groin pull at 2-5 love-30.

Buck up pal, don't let that happen again.

Get her to play Mixed Doubles with you. Assuming you're not too bad you should get a few easy games while your opponents mistakenly attack her as the "weaker player" before they adjust.

While I was at the Newcombe tennis ranch as a junior I lossed matches to maybe 4 or 5 girls.

I hit briefly again, when I was a junior with one of the local college tennis players (girl), she beat me as well.

You have too look at the situation as practice, it should not be embarrassing to lose to a girl, she is simply better that you. I would say hit with her more often...

You should've at least challenged her by saying that whoever loses pays for dinner. Since you lost, it would've been a win win situation.

Hey, back in my senior year in high school my coach told me to play against our #1 girl, and I lost 6-2 (I was #8 for the guys). I think it's only embarrassing if you make it that way, coz I didn't really care about the loss, and none of my friends really did. Then in my 1st year of college I lost to another girl 6-2, but I didn't care either... then in my 2nd year I lost to yet another girl but I forgot the score. I didn't care about that either. So... I've lost to three different girls in my life, but it never bothered me :S

You'd probably have to be in the top 250, or maybe a top college player before you could likely beat any female on the planet. Since you are not even close to that level of play (neither am I, nor is most anyone else here I assume), there is always a chance of running into a female that can beat you. You were simply unfortunate enough to have it happen.

don't be ashamed. in my early tennis days, i would lose regularly to a D1 female player who later went on to play the pro circuit. however by the end of the summer i started taking sets so i learned a few valuable competitive lessons from her. it's all good.

Most guys posting here could lose to a woman that's been playing serioulsy. Even a not so hot woman that's been taking regular lessons for many years with a top pro could beat a male newcomer to the sport. Tennis is a skill sport - it's not just about athleticism.

Truthfully around here the vast majority of guys I see play poor tennis. They are just scratching on the surface of their potential. I see bad serves - lousy forehand - horrible looking volleys and no footwork. Of course a fundamentally sound woman who is maximizing her ability can beat a guy like that.

I am not sure I buy your story since this girl has been only playing 9 months? Did she play every day during those 9 months?

Pete
