Losses of Big 4 that still shock you even today

Personally I'd prefer to win Wimbledon, be RU at both Montreal and Cinci and then win the USO but maybe that's just me. ;)

He was busted up after the heavy clay schedule. Can't blame him for needing a rest. You can't always get what you want/prefer. So he settled for something else.

I undestand that RG has always been his priority, but why would he tank when leading 5-2 and serving for the match? Hard to digest.
Anyway, he played Rome next week and went all the way if I am correct. Tanking there would make at least equal sense, if not more than tanking in Madrid.

Well, Rome >>> Madrid. I guess both him (and Novak) had enough of the blue clay, lol!

Nadal's loss to Fognini at the USO this year was probably the biggest shock of the year, especially from that position.

Forgotten about Seppi-gate? That was much more surprising.

The betting people were encouraging backing Fognini in this match.

Yep, now THAT was indeed a genuine shocker.
I well remember the tournament director already yapping about having Nadal's name on the board of the stadium before there was even one ball being hit - much to the annoyance of several other players.

And no, I do not believe in any a top player "tanking" matches. Most usually it's an excuse used by fans of said "tanker" who are trying to deal with their disbelief about the surprising loss of their fav.
It's about equivalent to the much-heard comment by Fed fans a couple of years ago, that he'd from now on "only care for the big tournaments"...

Djokovic's loss to Wawrinka at RG2015 ranks second on my list.

Honestly, I personally felt that match was a coin flip going in, after he got up 2 sets on Murray and had to go to 5 to finish him off I wasn't all that confident.

I see someone mentioned Seppi over Fed this year. What about Stakhovsky over Fed at Wimbledon and Karlovic over Hewitt Wimbledon round 1 as defending champion?

The loss to Querrey shoked me even more, Robredo is known as tough mentally, the loss to Querrey is impossible to understand other than 'tanking' in order to be fresh for the WTF, Djokovic was destroying Querrey, 6-0 in the first (maybe a break up in the second set but not sure about that)
Yes, he was served for the match, ended up losing that set in TB.
That loss maybe looked shocking to many , but it wasn't actually. Gasquet said later that he didn't showed up for practice that morning which was booked earlier with him , Novaks team told him that he vomited during the night. His father/so respected here btw:oops:/ at that time was literally on his deathbed in Munich hospital and he rushed there just in our after match.Even if he managed to win that match in 2sets, I think he would have lost the next one whomever he had to play.
Apart from obvious- Meltzer RG10 disaster, for me it's Haas Miami 2013 match.

For Federer- losses to Volandri and Canas is his mythical prime.
For Nadal the first one was Rosol W12 ,that was the opening gate for many..
For Andy hmm, he use to have some really bad losses, maybe to Young... [/QUOTE]

I agree that Djokos loss in RG final wasn't totally shocking given his history there and the trouble Stan has given him plus the 5 set 2 day Murray match, however losing after being a set up was really shocking to me.

Pretty much the same scenario as last year. Loses RG final after winning 1st set then poor Federer suffers at Wimbledon.
Well as Andy said once, same can be said for Djoko: "I am getting closer" :)

Djokovic's losses to Murray at USO2012, W2013 and Olympics2012 were very shocking to me.

Federer's losses to Murray at AO2013 and Olympics2012 were equally shocking.

Nadal's loss to Murray at USO2008 was pretty shocking too, given that Nadal had comfortably crushed Murray at Wimbledon that year.

Nadal to Rosol 2012. He had made it to 5 consecutive slam finals, and had made it to the Wimbledon final in his last 5 appearances! Still a shock, even with the ones to follow.

Federer to Safin 05 Australian Open. He turned into Monfils on match point...going for the between-the-legs-headline-winner. He lost the point and eventually the match. Shocking stupidity.

Djokovic to Safin 08 Wimbledon. He had made it to 5 consecutive SFs at the slams, making the US Open final and winning the AO. The 2nd round loss to #75 ranked Safin a huge shock.

Although it doesn't seem as that much of a shock in hindsight, Djokovic's defeat of Fed at AO 2008 was also highly shocking at the time, and Fed was expected to just collect that title.
Similarly, Nadal's loss to Tsonga that year was also surprising, although not to the same extent.

Those are definitely 2 losses that not only shook me (and still shake me) but also disappointed me massively! I had tickets to 2008 AO Final and was desperately hoping to see a Fed v Nadal final, which at that point seemed a fairly reasonable expectation. I remember flying to Melbourne incredibly disappointed and my girlfriend at the time being seriously unimpressed with my mood (especially seeing she had purchased the tickets for us as a Christmas present)!!!

Fed vs Delpo USO 09. I still think Fed is winning it
The reaction of Fed fans on this forum to this loss has always surprised me. Sure, he lost from a winning position but he's had his fair share of close shaves. After playing so many important matches, you are bound to lose some. And it's not like he lost to a nobody. That was GOATING Delpotro, who by the way had just spanked Nadal 2,2,2, which is unthinkable regardless of the surface.
To this day, Fed fans seem pretty upset about this loss. Look, I am not criticising or making fun of anyone here and I honeslty dont have any problem with anyone lamenting over any loss. But, why specifically this one?

Wawrinka is capable of losing to anyone. This year alone he's lost to Stakhovsky, Haase, Mannarino, and Delbonis
Considering of how Stan plays, it does not surprise me when he loses in early rounds (mentally off) or retires from the match.

Lol...so you get shocked every time one of these guys loses to Murray? Such disrespect!!!

Djokovic vs Nishikori last year in the USO semifinal and the Melzer match.

I still don't understand how he lost these matches.

federer vs nadal matches in French Open finals,

federer lost to nadal in 3 and 4 sets, could never extend the match to 5th set,

while nadal won 5 sets matches vs federer at Wimbledon 2008 and AO 2009 and he lost one 4 set and one 5th set match at Wimbledon 2006 and 2007 respectively

Off the top of my head:

Federer:

Canas TWICE in a row in 2007, Del Potro at 2009 USO, Hewitt at 2010 Halle, Stakhovsky at 2013 Wimbledon and Seppi at this year's AO.

Nadal:

Soderling at 2009 RG, Rosol at 2012 Wimbledon, Darcis at 2013 Wimbledon, Kyrgios at 2014 Wimbledon, Murray at this year's Madrid (never lost to him on clay before), Brown at this year's Wimbledon and Fognini at this year's USO (from being 2 sets up)!

Djokovic:

Safin at 2008 Wimbledon, Roddick at 2009 AO, Melzer at 2010 Wimbledon, Federer at 2011 RG (after being unbeaten that year), Robredo at 2014 Cincinnati.

Murray:

Young at 2011 IW, Bogomolov at 2011 Miami, Anderson at 2011 Montreal, Djokovic at 2012 Shanghai (after holding 5 championship points), Raonic at 2012 Tokyo (after holding match point), Raonic at 2014 IW (after being up a set and a break), Simon at this year's Rotterdam, Coric at this year's Dubai.

2 sets to love up... Crazy. Reminds me of Fed losing to Djokovic at the US Open 2011 or Tsonga at Wimbledon 2011 having won the first two sets in each of those matches. I mean you should don't expect a player of his caliber to lose with a commanding lead like that.

Nole had to play semi and final in 3 consecutive days. If they delayed the final till Monday things would have been much different.

Stan this, Stan that... he beat an exhausted opponent. LMAO at the so-called God Mode of Stan.

Watch the match once more. You'll see Nole wasn't able to chase down the ball in the last 2 sets and I can't remember how many times he chose to lob i/o hitting a passing shot - his favorite shot, just because he's too tired and his body couldn't stretch anymore.

Of course Stan deserves winning as he played better, but better than a 70% Nole.

Sounds like a Djokovic fan making excuses.

Can we all stop classifying Murray as part of the "big 4". Really? Please? The whole "big 4" thing was a stupid moniker to begin with tbh.

Loot at it this way. By including Murray as part of this elite group, Federer's record against the other 3 will not look as laughable as his against just Djokovic and Nadal. So, it's Fed fans' interest to include Murray in the "big 4" too.

Going by the del Potro progression, he won 3 250's HC in a row the previous year in 2008 and made the QF, and then lost embarrassingly double-bageled on AO QF, dragged to 5th set at FO, it was not at all a big shock as one would like to project it :)

I don't care to be honest. Murray has beenin the latter stages of slams alongside Federer,Nadal and Djokovic for many years now, so he deserves some mention.

At the end of 2012 Fed had a great record against Djokovic. This record was expected to get worse as long as Fed decided to keep playing while Djokovic was still in his peak/prime. Nothing surprising. You can't expect the older player to dominate the prime/peak younger player.

Federer only has a laughable record against Nadal, not Djokovic.

Nadal's loss against Ferrer at MC 2014 was a bit of a shock too. Hadn't lost to Ferrer on clay in 10 years at that point.
