I just received a pair of New Balance 1001s from TW. Man I love these shoes! Great cushioning and support. How simmilar are the 1002s in terms of sizing, cushioning, support and performance?

I'm loving mine as well! I was playing exclusively with the Nike Breathe Free II's for the past couple of years, but knee pain (patella) was making me want a little more cushion. The 1001's definitely fit the bill. It's just a more substantial-feeling shoe with better cusion and a great fit.

Just ordered a pair of 1002's without trying them - hopefully they work out as well as the 1001. Will let you know how they fit respective to 1001.

I just got my new pair of 1002's. The fit is noticably roomier vertically and just ever-so-slightly wider. I went EE on both the 1001 and 1002 and the 1002 has me thinking the regular (D) width might be better. Cushioning, weight, and stability seem very similar - but I won't know for sure until I get them on the court. Right now, I'm thinking I like the fit of the 1001 a little better.

As a side note, I also received a pair of KSwiss Defier RS. (I've been looking for a shoe that fits as well as the Nike Breath Free II but with better cushioning). This is an excellent-feeling shoe. It has the same cushioning volume as the NB, but more cushioning feel as the rubber compound used in the soles seems softer. For a 'one-size-fits-all', these are on the wider side and fit great.

Yes, more CT1001 users!!

My trusty CT1001 also help my heel problem. Now, I am looking for a different pair of shoes, mainly want to find something cheaper but with at least the same cushioning. I see the Reebok Match Day Pump is on sale here. What do you guys think?

Or I should stick to my 1001? I don't mind stock up on the 1001, afterall, it is on sale here too.

tarkowski, is the 1002 wider? I am concern because the 1001 fit my feet perfectly (and I do mean perfectly), it is like a glove except put on my feet. The feeling is like wear ice hockey skate minus the pain. Perfect fit. Did I mention prefect fit?

Hey Mucat,

I haven't yet tried the 1002 on court, but my initial assessment is yes, the 1002 is a bit wider and roomier all-the-way around. The 1001 fits more glove-like where the 1002 seems a bit airier throughout - especially the vertical volume through the toe box. It is definitely the same family of shoe, but where subtlties make all the difference, I think you'll continue to like your 1001 more given they fit so well for you.

My feet measure between 8.5-9, E - 1.5E and I've purchased the 9 EE in both 1001 and 1002. The 1002 model might just be too big - and I fear the D will be too narrow. Experience has taught me that going to 8.5 only bruises my toes.

Given that the 1001 have helped with your heel issue, fit like a glove, and can be had at close-out prices, it might be a good move to get a few pair. :D

Since you're also looking at alternatives, my initial impressions of the KSwiss Defier RS are that it will be great on court. It fits glove-like, has great cushioning, and is a little less $$ than the 1002. It doesn't have any mesh and I think will play a bit hotter than the NB and BFII. I reccommend at least trying a pair on if you have access to them. Like the NB 1001 and 1002, they have more substantial cushioning and sole than my Nike BFII, yet don't seem like they'd be cush enough to worry about rolling an ankle. I'm excited to give them a go.

did you give them a try yet? If so, how are they compared to the 1001's?

I just ordered some of the ct 1001's and they'll arrive on thursday. I'm thinking of getting another pair...but if the 1002's are better then I'll hold off.

Also, know any places to get these at closeout prices? TW doesn't seem to carry my size.

Hey shwayguy,

Unfortunately, not yet. I've been taking some time off to give my patella a break. I'm going to head out in another week or so.

The 1002 seems like a different-fitting 1001. Also, it seems that out-of-the-box, the 1002 sole is a tad stiffer.

While walking the house, there isn't a seamless ground contact from heel to forefoot. Whereas the 1001 and KSwiss Defier bend and transition nicely, the 1002 forefoot 'slaps' the ground - leading me to believe it is a bit stiffer and needs some wear. 1002 also has a very high toe-box. My wife commented that I'm now wearing 'clown shoes'. I think they feel pretty good, but the without yet taking them to the court, I'm preferring the 1001.

KSwiss seems cushier than both NB, and much more glove-like than NB 1002. No mesh though - so sweat might lead to blisters. Don't know...

I have used the 1001's since they first came out. I ordered the last two 4EEEE

pair. I have one more 1001 pair to go. I hope the 1002 will be a little wider

though.

Mucat, I also am a great fan of NB 1001's; the only downside for me was the lack of toe drag protection, leading me to wear through them pretty quickly. If you can still find a pair, I have found the Reebok Upset DMX to be a close competitor; they are a wide shoe already and fit similarly to a 1001 2e. Well cushioned with great ventilation and toe drag protection.

The 1001 and 1002 are both very comfortable but not durable. Both only last me 2 months before the top starts falling apart of holes in the bottom. I am not buying New Balance again and looking for another shoe. I am considering KSWISS.

Width is one of my concern, I wear 1001 in D, so if reebok shoes in general are wider than 1001, than I might have to stay with NB 1001. Thank you, backcourt.

No worries. Let us know how it goes....

I just got my order in today. They actually look better than they do online. The fit is outstanding and are surpisingly light. I'm looking forward to giving them a try.

That can't be good. I'm probably going to buy another pair of the 1001's since they are discontinued and are pretty hard to find for a decent price already.

Hi shwayguy,

Finally got a chance to put some court time on both shoes.

The KSwiss Defier RS is an outstanding shoe. It fits my foot the best and no question - has a more cushioned ride than both NB models. Regarding the NB models, the NB 1001 has seems a bit more cushioned than the 1002. The 1002 sole feels stiffer - maybe a little lower to the ground - more high performance if you will.

This is all personal of course. Comfort and fit-wise, I'd rank them like this:

KSwiss Defier RS
NB 1001
NB 1002

Getting the 1002 in a standard 'D' width might make it a better fit for me, as it is wider and roomier than the 1001. The 4E 1002 must be a monster shoe!

Both the KSwiss and NB have wide soles on the forefoot, which makes them both very stable and spread the impact over a wider area than my Nike BFII. The KSwiss, however, has softer, more shock-absorbing rubber - which makes it easier on the joints. It's a D width, but very close to the NB 1001 EE I have.

Take care,
Tony

Thanks for the info, tarkowski.

I guess the NB 1002 and Swiss Defier RS might be a bit wide for me. I need to stock up on the NB 1001 soon.
