To me Delpo seems to be more dangerous due to his consistency of pounding groundstrokes( although he hasn't shown it today) and variety.

Great effort by Cilic though,he has truly shown he will be a player to watch out for in 2010,and has a great chance of breaking into the top 10. I can see him scaling the rankings and improving his performance in the Grand Slams.

However,its still too early to label him as a contender at Grand Slams just because he beat both Nadal and Murray last year. Being objective here,the Nadal last year obviously isn't the Nadal now,and Murray had a wrist injury back then. If Cilic plays either the current Nadal or Murray,I'm pretty sure he'll lose in straights or 4. And despite Delpo's loss today,I still regard Del Potro as a better player overall than Cilic,but Cilic's getting closer and closer day by day.

Cilic has already beaten roddick on hardcourt back in 2008 when he was about 30 in the world. Cilic is better now and has wins over murray, nadal, and delpo.

Well, Federer had two slams under his belt, twin babies, he wasn't playing tennis like he played the year before at the US open final. Again Nadal returning to the tour from injury was just average in the semi's.

He was quite lucky to play Federer and Nadal in that form, unlike Murray who had to play his best in the semi's and in the final, he faced a top form Federer in 2008 US open.

USO 2009 he was playing in the semifinals against JMDP with an unhealed abdominal tear.

If you're going to malign someone for "making excuses", at least have your facts straight, please.

I think there's a reason he didnt play any even exhibition matches in the month of January and didn't defend his Heineken Open title ....... think he's not quite 100% but do feel he gave all he had to give today, and that's really all any fan can expect, isn't it?

it crushes me to see him lose especially today it was abysmal. i mean the guy stopped moving. he even turned his back on one of the points. it was like he had long given up. i dread to think of a future marred with injuries for him. somebody talked of steroid addiction here. if he comes to the dubai open i'd save him

I don't think he played his best in either of them. I obviously think he played much worse in 2009 than in 2008, but again I feel that if you play and get beat you shouldn't be making excuses. I only did it to just show you how annoying it can be to put down another player who isn't your favorite. Also Federer was in great form heading into the US Open with his drubbing of Djokovic and Murray at Cincy and Djokovic again at the US Open.

As far as DP goes, I wasn't going at him for retiring. I was trying to get some other posters to have a go at him for retiring (hint: ramej, sakalam, regnarman).

But those other posters are fooled by Delpo's nice guy looks and they think he's infallible as a sportsman.

I think his on court personality varies tremendously compared to when he's off-court. On court he comes across as a bit of a Big Guy with an agressive looking face. BUT off court, in his interviews he's nothing more than a kitten.
