Mac and Borg at Laver Cup

Dhumzhur was playing Struff in St Petersburg so I clicked onto Laver Cup instead. Borg in particular looks bored out of his mind and disinterested sitting on the Captain's bench. Like he'd rather have a stack of his reputed comic books to read courtside. I knew the exo silly season was upon us but not necessarily this early.

But yet here is another thread on how the Laver Cup is not worth your time. If they didn’t want to be there, they wouldn’t be there. So you can go back watching whatever.

I noticed that Mac was hardly saying anything to the players during the changeovers.

Borg just seemed happy to be there, wearing the same smile throughout.

Clowns Isner and Querrey seemed to enjoy themselves in the background making volleyball spikes and basketball dunks to celebrate their team's winning points.

For the final day tomorrow I wish Borg and Johnny Mc would show up at their Captain benches wearing

What does it appear to you that they're thinking about as this thing goes on? Surely not tennis from what I've been seeing. "Should I have asked for more money for this thing?" "Some nice looking women here in Prague." "Could go for a few Urquell Pilsners right now"

This is by far the best and probably the most accurate observation from the event.

Mac looks quite into it. Borg looks like he always does, hard to tell how he's feeling just from looking at him.

That's always been Bjorn's personality. In 1983-84, NBC (American TV network) had Borg on as a commentator. He would just sit there for a three hour match and interject about 12 words. His stint as a tennis analyst was very short-lived. It makes me kind of sad to see this tennis legend viewed as just a nobody for the Laver Cup, but he never liked the limelight.

Mac loves tennis, and he loves the sound of his own voice, so he's a natural fit for this, and I think has come up with some good stuff. I don't think Borg likes either of those things in the same way that McEnroe does, so he's not. It's pretty sad to see, but he's being paid, so can't feel too bad for the guy :D Won't be at all surprised if and when they do this again to see Mac back on the world side, but someone like Becker taking Bjorn's spot.

Borg was clearly happy with Nadal after winning the doubles match with Federer. The most emotion out of Borg all event. Did anyone expect anything different from Borg? It was always hard to tell how he was feeling from looking at him, with McEnroe just the opposite. McEnroe is also fighting against the odds, as his players on paper are big underdogs, and then there's the past issues with Nick Kyrgios' attitude. In contrast, Borg's Europe team has two all-time greats, two solid experienced players (one of whom has won a major), and two of the great up and coming players who are already ranked high in the world rankings.

That would be a fun tie breaker we can live with.
I agree that it could be fun. but Current Borg had limps when walking. I saw him limping as he was walking down the hall on the way out to the court. so I don't think he is in any shape to play tennis right now. And with McEnroe in playing Champions tour form against guys like Roddick and Courier,,Would destroy Borg right now...

You're right, and yet I feel like if McEnroe were coaching a team with a 16 and 19 time major winner he'd still have plenty to say :D I haven't seen Thiem and Zverev in action, are they getting any more input from him?

They were also playing imaginary golf and football. Did anyone see that silly hat Tiafoe was wearing? It reminded me of the hat rappers wore with track suits in 80s music videos.

Haha, Yes, a bucket hat .... for some indoor tennis.
Run TFO.
LL Cool Frances.

Well, otoh, it is a red (team color) version of what the great rod laver used to wear for matches on sunny, hot days. At times, Laver wore a similar hat in white, lined with a cabbage leaf or two.

So, while it's not the greatest hat in the World,
issa decent tribute.
Well done, Frances. Looks good on you.

Even in this pic,, Borg just didn't look like he enjoyed tennis and looked like he had fear in his eyes. and Mac looked confident here. and he destroyed Borg that day.
Yes. Great photo. Totally different from the 1980 final.
I will never forget those two matches.

As a 12u/14u jr player, i had the same interpretation of the warmup ahead of the 1981 final.
Then (spoiler alert)
Mac d. Borg 46,76.76,64.
As tough as it must have been for Mac to finally close that match, the Scoreline sounds a lot closer than it was.

I am really excited to see the film, btw.

What do you mean by that ?

Haha, I knew his eldest played some college tennis here in the US. But this must be Borg's youngest...cool!
Rafael gear, head to hands. Nice Lacoste/babolat footwear combination.
A bit of a soft, rich kid look...but I'm sure he'll grow out of it.

Meaning, I interpreted the dynamic as you did.
I saw the lost look in Borg's eyes. Did not know if it was just nerves, or something more serious, like emptiness.
I definitely recognized Mac's confident, relaxed look, and surefooted walk. Johnny was in control?
Looked like Borg felt pressure. John felt focus.

Most of us American kids watching....
Just felt it was Johnny's time.

Utter nonsense i think this pic could even have been before 1980 final not 81 and if so Borg won that match in historic final.

Borg never feared Mcenroe but he respected him as a player and a person if you look at Borg's career he was clearly becoming more disinterested in tennis by time we hit 1980 as he cut his schedule dramatically that year compared to 78 and 79 and in 1980 he was still easily world No1.

At start of 1981 he wom CGP masters in New York beating Mcenroe,Lendl and Connors on the way and not long after he made it clear he was cutting back his schedule even more for that year.

He had lost that desire and competitive edge to keep 100% focussed on tennis and he knew he would lose his No1 ranking because of this and to Borg if you were not No1 you were nothing,I remember Mcenroe even quotes Borg saying that in John's autobiography

right,, I see so you are saying Borg gave that Wimbledon to Macenroe. Mac would have been destroyed if Borg was playing for real.
