Mac hugs Federer

i'd prefer to see Federer cry.
i mean, we've seen him cry before, but that's because they were tears of joy. but that was early in his career.
now, he's got an ego the size of Uranus. seeing him cry would make him seem more human.
and i'd feel satisfied.

agreed. even though i have a strong dislike for federer, i find i like him just a slight bit better after today, as he did take the loss with class and had his ego-balloon punctured.

McEnroe was cheering for Federer the entire match. Everytime he hit a forehand winner he was orgasmic. . He was more disappointed in the loss than Federer. After all Federer has held that trophy over his head 5 times.

In the interview he was well-composed is his nerdy sweater. He knew he was defeated by the better player. It was McEnroe who was about to bawl. He needed the hug more than Federer. The entire display was totally unprofessional.

Yeah Federer did look like he had to split before he started crying, but hey it's hard to blame him.

hmmm... as much as i think john mcenroe (and patrick, for that matter) are blowhards who talk WAY TOO MUCH about themselves (j-mac must have brought up his insignificant hitting session with nadal at least 25 times) and talk too much in general, after re-watching the video it does kinda look like j-mac was trying to cover for federer, seemed like he was doing him a favor by bailing him out of that interview and saving him face.

or it could just be that j-mac is an attention wh0re haha

i guess SINCE THIS IS SUCH A DEFINING ISSUE OF THE MATCH LETS TALK ABOUT IT A LOT AND ASSUME MAC TAKES IT UP THE ARSE ON A DAILY BASIS NOW

lol at all these opinions

it was just a hug. lol
Lmao. Yeah not much more than a hug after a bitter end for Fed.

To me it looked like Roger got a bit annoyed/put off after McEnroe tried to pull of that noble gesture, since he didn't want to come off looking like a crybaby..
This will only make Roger more hungry..
Was starting to wonder when his Wimbledon run would end..
If he had won i would have said there is no way he can win next year...
Rafa must be over Jupiter...

It is probably only immature and young ppl who think guys giving guys hugs is a gay exclusivity. Many parents from many countrys hug their kids.

Just because it don't look cool to the pop culture don't make it wrong.

it was not awkward and unprofessional. Mcenroe, the champion he is sensed how federer was feeling and it was fitting. the guy won 5 straight and he prizes wimbledon as the biggest tournament of the year. it was supposed to be his day but nadal snatched it.

btw, awesome link, thanks

How ironic it is that these immature teenagers don't know or understand the value of a hug.
We're all part of a society thats slowly alienating us all from each other it seems. Lets hope these retards grow up and learn some real values before they have children. Can you imagine a childhood without love?
I'm sure many kids on here are already living this reality, causing this major glitch in social and moral values.

Wow, that hug was so awkward and uncalled-for. I had heard about this video since yesterday and a lot of people said Roger was about to cry. Which wans't the case at all. Roger was really composed during the interview. That hug made Roger leave. I have a feeling that Mac is the one who needed a hug !

hey, i needed an effing hug after that. that match was so emotionally draining. it's really only now that i realize how much i like both players. everyone around knows i've been pulling for nadal to get his first in forever, but i really can't help but feel for Fed a lot right now. what john said was right, more than anything, these guys deserve a thank you for presenting imo the greatest tennis match in the history of the sport.

Rog was totally shaken and about to cry every second. He was not composed at all. But that's just normal and good after such a loss

Yes, it was awkward. Kinda funny too. Potential to be mis-understood too. But well I know McEnroe. He is kinda on the emotional side....

Yes, that's why MacEnroe's voice cracked at the end of the Fed interview. I think it was also a very emotional moment for him.

That was actually HILARIOUS. I loved it.

I think what it was though, was that Mac asked some tough questions to really get some emotion out of Federer. He wanted him to cry just a bit. It makes for good tv and, really, he wanted to show that Fed's human.

The hug itself was genuine though, I think. It also goes to show just how much this match meant to Mac, that he would get so emotional and give Fed a hug.... lol

All of you hug cynics, get some emotion into your lives...it's part of being a real person. I guess you may realize that when you grow up . Or not, which would be really pitiful.

Federer is a very emotional person, especially when he wins, I saw him a few times cry after a win and he was very touching, that's why he's such a genuine and human champion.
I would have hugged him if I felt he needed comfort but that wasn't the case when Mac interviewed him. Just Mac did was causing him an embarassment, that's why he left.

Interesting, I didn't get that take on the interview at all. I'll have to look at it again.

Yeah i agree with the other poster who said Mac did a favor for Fed by cutting it short. Fed was absolutely about to bust out in tears any moment and that would have been somewhat of an embarrasment but Mac has to much respect for Fed to let that happen. Nothing wrong with that hug at all. You guys need to lighten up.

Simple gesture

Nothing at all wrong with a hug. They've known each other for a long time - Mac was just reaching out - wouldn't see this kind of thing in any other sport, that's for sure.

Cry like the arrogant spoiled brat you are, Federer!
You cannot beat Nadal! live with it!
Federer lost by the narrowest of margins to a great player; perhaps
the greatest of all-time. Federer is a class act and anyone who
is a tennis fan should appreciate the amazing display that he and
Nadal put on yesterday. The match easily could have gone either
way.

If Bud Collins stopped an interview and gave Federer a hug 95% of the posters would roast him. But since the same percentage are marks for McEnroe he get a pass.

. . . not from me! The 'hug' was unprofessional and totally out line. McEnroe need to be called on the carpet fot it.

Thats because he has never played the game and wouldnt understand the emotion. Mac has been there done that.

this thread is asolutely pointless.
WHO CARES?!

Federer just got done losing a match that he tried his very best to win. he did have chances, but couldnt capitalize. Nadal won yesterday because that was how it turned out.

J-Mac gave federer a hug because he wanted fed to know that he still has fans, and even though he lost, we're still all grateful that we were allowed to watch.

and while federer looked composed for MOST of the interview, you could visibily see his eyes begin to water just before jmac hugged him, and he was definitely tearing up just after, because the emotion of the loss was definitely getting to him.

and the fact that people now are saying that he's number 2 in the world, he now has something to prove, big time. he now has to try to prove that wimbledo is HIS. personally, even though he will be nearly 28 next year, i consider next year's season to be knocking at spectacular, for both nadal and federer (maybe djokovic, but he's been humbled now)

Yeah, it's really not a big deal like everyone is taking it to be, it was just a kind gesture because Federer was in such an emotional state.

Yeah, I think was unnecessary. Roger obviously was feeling the emotion but I don't think he was on the verge of breaking into tears, he was unhappy that's all and couldn't hide his sadness. But don't think he was about to start sobbing. If anything, Mac's hug would have caused him to start sobbing, which is why he walked away after the hug. I think Mac did it with good intentions, but I think the hug actually made Fed sadder.

I'm all for the hug. I'm all for any type of emotional display after such a great match. We will all be old grandparents and people will still talk about the 2008 Wimbledon final. I almost cried myself with no clear reason: I suspect the fair beauty of the moment.

I mean, I don't think it was a bad gesture to what J Mac did, I mean he's done worse in his life. I think more than anyone he knows how it is to lose a match that was there for the taking!!

Who would have thought the Macenroe of old who I saw on court so often - the tough guy we learned to love here would be so touchingly tactile and understanding of anothers sadness. I bet he is a great father

a big hug from Bud Collins LOL sure, you don't want to lose another final after that. hope Duke of Kent and all the centenarians from royal box hugged the Fed.

Male tennis hall of famers (current and future) should not hug one another after one of them has just played a memorable match and lost. What they should do is give each other the equivalent of the pat of the buttocks. In this case, Mac should have reach around to the back, and pull down just a pinch Fed's tiddy whitey. Fed should have reciprocated.

In the case of Nadal, another future Hall of Famers. Nadal should have said "uh..I can do it myself so let's do male bonding and we will 'adjust" our undies in synchrony".

What JMac did was too GAY.

too gay? are you a mormon? or a child? sorry for the questions, no offense, but it's so weird. my apologies if it's a joke. if not, I'm scared. it was Wimbledon 2008 not 1908.

It was really inappropriate. I have nothing against hugs, but there is a time & place. Fed was obviously trying to hold it together and be professional after the loss. With a camera & mic shoved in his face the last thing you expect is for the interviewer (Mac) to come and hug you.

guys do you have a problem with your masculinity? or is it puritanism? or what? what's the right time/place for hugs? in a park in the middle night? we're talking about a hug after a devasting loss. do you need to hide to hug a friend????? hope you don't feel you have to.

Jane, in Western society men don't go around hugging eachother. Now we can sit here and write a phd dissertation on why this is like beardy tw@ts or we can just accept it as fact. I prefer the latter approach.

Really? I see men hugging after the SuperBowl and that's accepted in Western society. Men might not hug each other as a greeting like a handshake, but it certainly happens during big events, of which yesterday was one.

Ok granted in certain situations like at the end of sporting events it is common place. But it was the timing of the hug which made it strange - it was given as an emotional consolation in the middle of a conversation. Kind of like a parent would do to a child. I just felt sorry for Roger - as if losing Wimby wasn't bad enough.

think there's a big difference between US and Europe about hug. My friends hug, only a few are gay. I'm happy they don't feel uncomfortable. poor american tv if they embarrassed about that. can't say more. just can't understand. move on

Yes, and a lot of men kiss on the cheek in Italy. Doesn't mean they are gay.
