Mains/Crosses tension differences: newb questions inside

I've searched and found a few conflicting answers.

Suppose I'd like 60 lbs.

What do I use for tension in the mains & crosses if I'm using:

1. 16g poly mains, 16g syn gut crosses
2. 17g poly mains, 16g syn gut crosses
3. 17g poly mains, 17g syn gut crosses
3. 16g syn gut mains, 17g syn gut crosses

And is there anything to know for the newer "multi" strings when using those with a cheaper (syn gut) cross string?

This question is difficult to answer in anything other than a really generic way. Strings in the same category, like poly, can be vastly different.

People have different preferences when it comes to poly/syngut hybrids. Some people string to match tension/tension loss between the two strings, some go for feel, some for durability. It really depends on what's important to you. I string my Cyberflash/Liberty hybrid at the same tension on both strings. On other combos I might string the poly a few pounds lower than the syn gut. This could explain why you see conflicting information. You may not be looking at the particular strings involved, and instead are focusing on categories.
