A WHOPPING bet on Nick Kyrgios to win this month’s Australian Open has left bookmakers stunned, with one ambitious punter facing a near-million dollar payout if the Aussie young gun does the unthinkable.

While Kyrgios can beat anyone in the world on his day, he’s yet to show the kind of consistency required to win a slam and didn’t make it past the second round last year.

That hasn’t stopped one punter unloading on the 22-year-old in a stunning show of faith, outlaying a whopping $40,000 on his to win the title at with sportsbet.com.au at odds of $21.

The punter will be paid out $840,000 if Kyrgios can became the first Australian champion at Melbourne Park since Mark Edmondson in 1976 — a tidy 800k profit.

“This bet totally took us by surprise. Kyrgios has the weapons to win a Grand Slam, but that’s about it really. Best of luck to the punter…..I think they’ll need it,” saidsportsbet.com.au’s Christian Jantzen.

Roger Federer ($3.25) is a firming favourite to win this year’s tournament ahead of world No.1 Rafael Nadal ($4.50), Novak Djokovic ($6) and young gun Alexander Zverev ($10).

:eek:o_O:rolleyes:

The conditions for the bet are actually really good. Health for Nadal, Djoker, Murray, Wawrinka is all in doubt. Of course Nick actually seems to relish playing the big names.....

If Nick somehow has found motivation in the last two months, it's a great bet. It goes without saying that it's a huge if.

Believe may be the operative word, but I still do. Better odds than there are on any of the gods some pray to materialising. I'm not gonna drop $40k on it, but I'll be putting something out there on Kyrgios, almost as a blessing. Watching him go through the motions Vs Ebden in Brisbane, I still can't believe that he hasn't sorted his body out yet though.

Best odds you’ll ever get is Federer 16/1 last year.

I lumped a substantial amount on him because 1. I assumed he’d return to 2014-2016AO level and 2. That level would easily be enough to win if Djokovic wasn’t in top form (which he wasn’t since 2016 RG)

I’m still annoyed I didn’t lump hundreds on him at Wimbledon though. Think he was about 5/2 so a £500 bet would’ve scored a nice £1750 return (I think?)

Kyrios just called his trainer for his left thigh...lol. Boom...there goes 40k$ :D
LOL I was in the stadium and the trainer had to attend Kyrgios 3 times.... First just one little brown tape on the back of the knee, then next one the trainer added another brown little tape on the same spot, then the next one big white tape all around the top of the knee and below the knee.... Gah such drama.

Hang on, I’m very confused. If the fully functional Optimus Prime mega robot were built in a factory, would its parents be the machines who put it together, or the people working the assembly line? If it’s the machine, would it’s grandparents be the machines that put the Parent machine together? But what if that machine were made my a human? Then Optimus Primes grandpappy is a human, meaning that by looking at his Ancestry, you might be able to trace his lineage back to yourself, making you V E R Y distant cousins or something.

what can I say? either he is very brave or a millionaire who has too much money anyway

or its a desperate last gamble with all the money he has left and the Russian mafia demanding their $1m back by Jan 29th latest. Cilic might have been a better bet and longer odds.

Wouldn't put it past him.

If you air drop him into the finals, sure. Getting there surviving week 1 against the grunts/grinders without getting bored, I will say it's not happening (just yet)

If I had like millions and millions to bet, and I was looking to bet like $40K on about 10-20 different long shot odds hoping that alteast 1 actually won the bet - then in this scenario, I think the bet makes some sense.

However, in a scenario where it was my only $40K it seems crazy.

Davis Goffin's odds are the same as Nick Kyrgios, I would definitely bet on the latter if I had so much money to spend.
