Marcelo Melo wasn't happy with Novak Djokovic's behavior during the mixed doubles clash

Former doubles world No. 1 Marcelo Melo wasn't happy with Novak Djokovic's behavior during the mixed doubles clash at the Tokyo Olympics. Brazil's Melo, who was playing alongside Luisa Stefani, couldn't beat Djokovic and Nina Stojanovic in their mixed doubles opener in Tokyo.
Djokovic and Stojanovic, who were playing together for the first time, handed a 6-3 6-4 loss to Melo and Stefani. "Novak surprised me but on a negative way. There was no need for that. Two days ago he filmed himself speaking about Brazil and Brazilians, our energy, and now he is behaving this way.
He had a smash directly in my back which he didn't have to play that way. But OK, this is tennis and everybody is trying to play it the way he wants. Me personally would never play that way," Melo said, as quoted on Sport Klub.

There's more to read in the link I posted. What do you think?

There was really no need for that? I'm Brazilian and I don't get Marcelo's point. What does Djokovic praising Brazil's vibe have to do with the way he plays against the Brazilian mixed doubles? Did he expect Djokovic to let them win? Maybe a sore loser?

With reference to the specific shot Nole hit at Melo's back, was there an alternative tactic as effective as hitting towards the Brazilian? Here's the video (1st one):

Not Djokovic's fault for simply following a tradition.

Feel like there has to be more to the story here, there’s no way an experienced doubles player like Melo is that upset about getting hit with a Smash at the net. I feel like it happens multiple times a match.

Melo is, and has been a drama queen for many years. Can't remember the year and venue but he was rolling on the ground, eyes closed and gritted teeth as if he was about to die after getting hit....................only to make a miraculous recovery to carry on playing not long after

he prolly expected a gold medal being a double specialist only to lose to a part time doubles players who is focused on singles and didn't really plan to play doubles only deciding to play at the last minute

Quite similar as in his previous singles match against Fokina:
1:08

Bro Djokovic is so bad at overheads he was probably aiming for the baseline player there. If he was TRYING to hit the guy the ball would have nailed the net or flew long.

Also: “I don’t recall inviting him to the net”

just part of doubles

It’s a long standing Brazilian tradition mostly used in football but has applications in other sports as well. Neymar is the role model for all Brazilian athletes. He’s the undisputed goat of rolling on the ground.

That is usual djoker stuff shouting and animatic expressions between points. May be this is the first time melo played with him...For Fedal it is a common thing to counter while playing djoker

I was going to say the same thing. Is he a soccer player? Must have mixed up the sports! What a sissy!

1) it was clearly inadvertent, 2) it was undoubtedly a legitimate shot 3) Novak has had a ball drilled at his head by Rafa. Rafa has had a ball drilled at his chest by Kyrgios. This seems rather tame compared to that.

Sadly that’s the only way he gets publicity. He pulls that out from Kyrgios’ playbook.

Perfectly legitimate shot. Mello needs to stop whining.
How embarrassing for an experienced Doubles player, a former Doubles #1, to lose to a singles player playing with a brand new partner. Sad.

Or Mello could be disgruntled about Djoker's PTPA activities.

Apparently Melo double faulted on break point to lose the first set.

That is a hilarious choke a) because in mixed doubles, the male server almost never ever gets broken, for obvious reasons, b) Melo is 6'8" and should have a huge serve.

So I think he must be hurting very much inside.

He’s a shill against PTPA and desperate for publicity.

For someone named Melo, he sure is high strung.
Melo is a ball magnet. Part of doubles is targeting the net man. I got hit the other day and told them it was a nice shot.
Still, Sock got the best of Melo to date with that huge forehand in 2018:

No doubt Nole fans gonna try and make Melo feel bad for saying what's on his mind.

Even if Novak was a doubles specialist, with epic net and volley control, Melo's criticism would be odd. It's not like he's hammering the ball.
Spiking the ball is something that singles players seems to be unable to do btw. Not even Fed is at the level of the best net players in doubles when it comes to double specific technique, even with fast net reflexes.

What is a "spike"? Where was Djoker supposed to hit that ball. It looked like either a high volley or low overhead.

6 foot 8 giant clown whining about a soft hit to the back. Unbeluevable wimpiness.
