March Madness 2019

#1
Selection Sunday is 31 days away but the madness started last night with the twin comebacks (one on a missed call by the refs) by Duke and LSU. Crazy night!

I don’t think this is a cakewalk for the all-world freshmen from Durham. This tendency for slow starts may pin them to an upset. There’s also a nice pack of solid teams to make the road tough for them from the Sweet 16 onwards. Tennessee under Rick Barnes have very few flaws. Michigan plays tough. Out west, both Gonzaga and Nevada are marching through their soft opposition and will be fresh but relatively untested. Calipari quietly (LOL!) had Kentucky into top 5 before the hose job last night.

This last month will probably shake a few pretenders from the tree or give a few others time to gel.

Discuss or disgust

UVA to do a complete 180, going from out in Round 1 in 2018 to a 16 seed last year to cutting the nets down in 2019.

I'm pulling for my boys from the Commonwealth, anyway. UK isn't disciplined enough to win it all. Duke looks great but too easy a pick. UNC also up and down. Tennessee is long and athletic and Barnes is a great/underrated coach. They could def win it all.

Duke getting trashed at home by UNC, 63-48 in the second half. We’ll have a new #1 if this holds up. SB-level second market ticket prices for a blowout upset...smh!

Zion went out early on a blown shoe that resulted in an injured knee. The left shoe “exploded” and in his fall he suffered a game-ending injury to his opposite knee. Momma, don’t raise your Dookies up to wear Nike PG 2.5’s!

UNC completes the upset, 88-72. Maye finishes with 30/14. Cameron Johnson, a Pitt transfer, had 26/7. That countered the combined 60/16 from Barrett/Reddish.

Zion’s injury is described as a sprain with no structural damage. There is no MRI capacity equipment at Cameron and he did not leave the building during the game. I would expect he will undergo a test to confirm the initial diagnosis tomorrow. Stay tuned.

LSU HC Will Wade is on tape in a FBI wiretap released for public airing in the Sneakergate saga. LSU is tied for first in the SEC entering their tournament and probably will be a #2-#3 seed in the NCAA brackets.

Zion returns tonight against Syracuse in dukes first acc tournament game.

UCONN beats USF and plays Houston tomorrow. We almost beat them in the lone regular season meeting without jalen Adams and he’s back now. I can’t see us beating UCF in the semis tho they’re a bad matchup

Gonzaga went ice cold from the arc in their conference tourney loss. Live by the trey, die by the missed trey will trip them up in the big tourney. They’ll still get a #1 but they are ripe for being upset before the Final Four.

My Noles just beat a very good UVa team in the ACC tournament. That might be enough to guarantee a #3 seed or better if we can win the whole conference tournament. We were #12 going in.

Your Noles can match up with anyone on any given night, Tom. That’s a dangerous team in the next couple of weeks.

I’m glad Leonard Hamilton was able to reload so fast after Dwayne Bacon and one-and-done Jonathan Isaac and Malik Beasley. He’s a phenomenal coach!

Looking forward to the rematch. Noles had Duke beat but a defensive breakdown cost them the game at the horn. I like FSU's chances to pull the upset. Duke short rotation could gas them out. They've looked tired at junctures in the first two rounds.

Zion is something else though. Absolutely unreal he has zero rust.

He was also out vs FSU in the 2nd half so we'll see how the 2nd one turns out. Excited for that one.

We are 14-1 in our last 15 with the only loss to UNC. The Duke close loss was the first of a three-game skid before this hot streak started. Kudos to the veteran leadership and Coach Hamilton for rebounding from that bad patch.

That was the game of the year so far. Zion <3

If he doesn’t go to the Knicks I’ll probably bandwagon whichever team ends up with him.

And in other news my team UCONN got destroyed lol. Mets packers Knicks UCONN, did not have a good year

Looks like we're getting a Michigan State Michigan Round 3 like Duke and UNC did. I'm conflicted with that lol.

It kind of sucks because even a 3-0 of Michigan likely won't move us to the 1 line. So not much to play for other than a trophy and pride.

I already have the feeling of dread thinking we will be the 2 with Duke as the 1. They're the only 1 seed I want to avoid as long as possible given our history with them and Zion.

Yon Cassius, beware of him! Even though he does not have the hungry look.

Will Kentucky lose a #1 seed by losing to Tennessee today?
I honestly have no idea. I do not envy the committee at all. I think you have so many teams with a legitimate case for a #1 seed. I personally do think the ACC deserves 3 #1's but I think UNC might get booted off it, much to the chagrin of their fans. Gonzaga is #1 quality but playing high school teams for 3 months has to count for something. I respect Gonzaga for playing a cream of the crop OOC schedule to help balance it out but I'm not sure they did enough to warrant a 1. But they will get one I think. I think Duke/UVA/Gonzaga are locked in. Then you have gridlock for the 4th spot.

I think the Big Ten is too weak so even if MSU were to 3-0 Michigan and become tourney champions on top of being co-season champions I do not think it is enough. Only themselves to blame though, don't get swept by dumpster fire Indiana and maybe you have a 1.

Tennessee is right on the fringe too. They definitely have to win tomorrow too though to be seriously considered.

Personally my #1s would be Duke UVA UNC Tenn if Tenn won their conference tourney (also have a h2h win vs Gonzaga as well).

But I think the #1s will be UVA Duke Gonzaga and then one of UNC/Kentucky/MSU/Tenn (assuming the last 2 win their games tomorrow) will all be feeling like they have a case to make a claim to it.

I honestly don't see how you could put Kentucky over Tennessee on the one line at this point. Tennesee doesn't have a single bad loss all season and beat Kentucky 2 out of 3 times, beat Gonzaga, etc.

Kentucky has some bad losses, including that almost 40 point loss to Duke. While in the beginning of the season, do 1 seeds ever lose games that bad? It'd probably be hard to find one lol.

I think you have to have Duke UVA and Gonzaga as one seeds. Duke is easily the best team when Zion is healthy plus they just won the ACC tournament. UVA has no bad losses and Gonzaga has one that just happened. I'd take Tenn over UNC and Kentucky but I think Kentucky will get it. I can't see three ACC teams getting one seeds.

FSU has to feel a bit miffed when they got slotted at #4 after upsetting a #1. Should be a #3 before Purdue. We beat Purdue this year. If they had been bumped into Purdue’s slot they play ODU and a rematch with ‘Nova in Hartford and Sweet 16 projects Tennessee and an Elite Eight rematch with UVA in Louisville. Instead they play Vermont and Marquette in Hartford and will then go west to Anaheim for #1 Gonzaga. The loonies justify Michigan State vs harder path Duke with the empty “staying closer to home” excuse and then ship us 3K miles to Anaheim???

And unc Kansas would be in Kansas City. A home game for a 4 seed over a 1. Committee isn’t too bright

Also love the closer to home reason given for MSU. Washington DC is so close! Thanks for duke ! Although I do think Gonzaga’s region is sneakily stacked. Gonzaga will be sweating it’s potential acc gauntlet
If FSU gets to them I’m confident we can leave with the W. Then we need to brace for a letdown vs that sticky bottom section (Michigan, Texas Tech and Buffalo are all tough) survivor. First though, Vermont and probably Marquette in Hartford.
