Marco Cecchinato: 'Novak Djokovic is the real world number one'

Well he isn't exactly wrong seeing as to how Novak is the only multiple slam champion of the season and how the other two big guys lately performed (especially mr.Goat himself...)
Of course he is, he won W and USO.

(Rafa can pick up every post-USO event and Djokovic is still #1 for 2018. And I don't have the authority to open the case. :()

No, Djokovic is not the number one, nor will he be unless he achieves more points than Nadal. The Year Ending #1 is awarded to the player who achieves more points in ALL tournaments overall (not only Grand Slams).

The ATP number one is awarded to the player who achieves more points, not the one who performs better at the Grand Slams. There are more tournaments than Grand Slams. Subsequently, Nadal is by definition the real number one, since he has more points than Djokovic.

Sorry guys, but you can't create your own subjective definition of number one. Only the ATP can officially define what "number one" is.

Yes, I can and I did. And it’s not a subjective measure: if you win W and USO you are the #1 player that year (and certainly when the other two majors split).

The ATP ranking system has a number of purposes one of which is to incentivize participation in the entire tour and get the top players to care about the post-USO tournaments and not only high paying Exo’s. ;)

None of this changes the fact that If you win W and USO — which have become much more important since the advent of the ranking system — you can sit out the rest of the year if #1 is your only concern because you are #1 for the year.

Even after the ATP ranking system came into being certain tennis publications would publish their own year end rankings. I’m following in that tradition.

Fed and VAMOS and R. Harrison can try again next year.

(it’s not exclusively a tennis website is what I meant, but I was worried this was the response I’d get :D)

Cecchinato recently broke his hardcourt duck, I don't believe he ever won a hardcourt match until this week.

Though Marco vs Djokovic at the French Open was one of the best matches of the year, especially that 4th set tiebreak. One thing for sure Djokovic brings is epic matches.

To those who said he isn't well let me tell you that you are such a bunch of Sherlocks i swear! Lol by winning two grand slams of the year you are simply best player of the world even without achieving top ranking and thats what i meant and everyone else, who claim that Djokovic is world number one! As if moral world number one, not actual! Now you are bunch of literate dummies, aren't you? Lmao

Novak devotee, it is somewhat ironic of you to insult the intelligence of other fans by calling them "literate dummies".
And no, Rafael Nadal is the moral number one and the moral victor of all his matches.

They won the same amount of matches this year at grand slams! Lol The only difference is that Nadal was able to reach at least quarter-finals of each four, while Novak stumbled once atbthe start of the year, when he wasn't quite himself yet! They both won 21 matches and are tied in that regard, but its the overall grand slam victories, that makes the real difference and in that department Novak outperformed Rafa! Oh and i didn't mean to offend anyone, just in case, my appology! I am just getting triggered, when some people take literally everything anyone says on the internet without realizing there is also metaphor...

I bet If Marco didn't defeat Novak at RG, he would NEVER say this.
He praised Djokovic, but between the lines he praised himself.

Granted there is something more to it, like when you scream into everyone's ear "hey, look! I beat the player that is now multiple slam season...take that!", but outside of that he isn't all that wrong, no other player in the tour performed better at grand slams, than Djokovic this season! Rafa won one grand slam tournament and reached semis of the last two and quarters at AO, that is 21 match! Djokovic won the last two and reached quarters of RG and 4th round of AO, aside from the fact, that he almost tanked entire first half of the season, it is still also 21 matches won across all four grand slams, but the difference is while he and Nadal are tied at matches won at all four grand slams this year, Novak has two trophies, while Rafa - only one! If i had to pick who is the best player between the two according to just that, even if both had the same matches won, I would pick Djokovic, thus the claims!

If you win two grandslams I think you should be number 1, but not on the ATP tour I guess . . . Whatever. It is what is. Djokovic would much rather have two grand slams than be number one.

No, I'm sorry but it's not an automatism. Djokovic has a good chance of being the number one at the end of the year but the number one is only ATP.
If at 31 December the number one ATP is Nadal, the number one 2018 is Nadal.
Djokovic will be "only" the best player 2018.

Number one is only designated by ATP. It is a dictatorship but it is not my fault.

Nadal did a great job to get to number one. He won Rome and Monte Carlo.
And also Rogers Cup!...Well tbh...Novak isn't bad either i mean he did snatched those Cinci title so...besides they are only two titles apart this season and if Novak wins Shanghai, Paris and WTF until the end of the year, there should be no more questions as to who is the world best player, but doing so he will guaranteed to recapture numero uno anyway...
