Marcos Baghdatis teaming up with Gil Reyes in Las Vegas

vive le beau jeu !

Talk Tennis Guru
i had thought about this possibility as marcors is sponsored by adidas... and it finally happened ! ;)
sorry if it has already been posted before...
Since bowing out to Paul-Henri Mathieu in the second round of the Sony Ericsson Open in Miami at the end of March, Marcos has been working with renowned fitness trainer Gil Reyes in Las Vegas. Reyes has been largely credited with the turnaround in Fernando Verdasco’s career this season and was instrumental in the phenomenal success of Andre Agassi.

“It was very good in Las Vegas,” enthused Marcos. “I worked on strength of body, specifically on areas of my body where I had injuries last year. I worked a lot and now I feel good and I feel confident. I would like to go again in the future, if possible. We’ll have to see.”

Finally, Marcos affirmed: “I am feeling very fit and am very happy to be back on Tour. I’m looking forward to getting back to winning matches again soon!”

marcos + intense fitness training could give something great ! :)

i like his quote about clay...
“It’s always tough on clay. This year obviously the main objective is to play good at Roland Garros. Then it gets easier on grass! You feel so bad on clay but it all gets easier afterwards,” Marcos joked. “I’m looking forward to fighting and finding a way to win.”
he'll be playing in ostrava challenger next week.

this is really good news for bagdhatis fans such as i, still h'll never reach the potential of his talent

This is a service available to top adidas sponsored players I believe it will therefore just be a short term thing in the way that Sven Groeneveld is available as a coaching consultant to the female Adidas players. Therefore expect a short term boost rather than a baggy revival to where his undoubted talent should really place him.

However all of this said it appears that he is finally addressing his biggest weakness - fitness so maybe he is finally getting serious before its too late

this is becoming a religious ritual for tennis players, traveling to sin city to meet the great buddha and power lifter reyes

I am very much a believer in skill & talent prevailing in sport. But it is obvious that the physical training component continues to become more & more important in the success of athletes in all sports. You look at Dwyane Wade in basketball hooking up with Michael Jordan's old trainer. You look at Verdasco with Gil Reyes. I don't think it's any coincidence that these trainers are capable of bringing out the best in great talents.

Baggy is ranked 92.

He will shoot up the rankings if he does well at the French Open.

He lost in the first round last year.

This is really good news. Murray has improved his stamina, Djokovic hires Muster old fitness coach, Baggy hires Reyes. Damn, everyone wants to beat The Rafa Nadal. The Rafa should win the calendar slam THIS YEAR. Next year might be too difficult.

Anyway, I don't think we've seen the best of Baghdatis yet. IF he can improve his physique, he will be a problem for everyone. His ball striking ability resembles that of Nalbandian IMO.

Good luck for the clay season sweetheart (p.s. plese grow your hair out-that "buzz cut" isn't working)

Awesome news. Baghdatis can do a lot of damage on tour if he is in shape.

I have heard talk of him trying to get fit before though and it never happened, so I wont get too happy until I see him winning matches.

go baggy. one of my favorite players and really fun to watch. here's hoping he stays healthy and makes it back to the Top 10.

He got wildcard for Belgrade tournament next week.
great ! :D
thx for the news, gj011. i was hoping for that as marcos and novak seem to appreciate each other... ;)

i hope he'll do better than in the challenger of this week, where he was ousted in the 1st round. :?

let's hope he makes good use of that WC and of Reyes because with clay season coming it only can get worse...:/

he unfortunately withdrew from zagreb but is already training in paris...
In preparation for the second Grand Slam championship of the year at Roland Garros, Marcos is working hard in Paris with two highly-skilled former professionals – Younes El Aynaoui and Franco Squillari.

Marcos has ended his alliance with Olivier Soules and, while he takes his time to find the right replacement, he will practice with El Aynaoui and Squillari to fine tune his game ready for Roland Garros – where he reached the fourth round in 2007 (l. to Andreev).

As Marcos continues to claw his way back up the South African Airways 2009 ATP Rankings from No. 86, having been ranked as high as No. 8 in August 2008, he will take the appropriate time to find the right person to help him rediscover the top-level form that has eluded him since suffering a succession of injuries in 2008.

While Marcos and his team are in discussion with a couple of prospective coaches, Marcos will benefit from the clay-court prowess of Moroccan El Aynaoui and Squillari of Argentina.

El Aynaoui reached a career-high South African Airways ATP Ranking of No. 14 in November 2003, a year that saw the right-hander reach the quarter-finals at the Australian Open – where he lost 21-19 in the fifth set of a memorable clash with Andy Roddick – and at the US Open. He was also a finalist on clay in Casablanca – one of 16 ATP World Tour finals that the Moroccan contested; he won five titles in his career, including four on clay.

Former World No. 11 (September 2000) Squillari also enjoyed his greatest success on clay courts. The Buenos Aires native captured three ATP World Tour titles, all on clay, and was a semi-finalist at Roland Garros in 2000 (l. to No. 3 Norman).

after his unfortunate knee injury right before wimbledon, marcos is back on the court this week-end, for the davis cup tie cyprus vs ireland.
for the first time in a while, he lost a set (even 2) in a DC single match, but he still won in 5 in front of his home crowd ! :)

R1 - M.BAGHDATIS (CYP) def. L.SORENSEN (IRL) 6-7(5) 6-4 3-6 7-5 6-4
R2 - C.NILAND (IRL) def. P.KALLIAS (CYP) 5-7 6-3 5-0 - Retired
(stomach cramps ?... according to the greek report that i babelfished, he should be able to play the double on saturday despite his retirement)
R3 - M.BAGHDATIS / P.KALLIAS (CYP) v. J.MCGEE / C.O'BRIEN (IRL)
R4 - M.BAGHDATIS (CYP) v. C.NILAND (IRL)
R5 - P.KALLIAS (CYP) v. L.SORENSEN (IRL)
by the way, after the previous tie of cyprus vs portugal, i read somewhere that he had the 3rd longest winning streak in single DC matches... can anybody confirm that ? (a little link, maybe ?...)

pame marcos !!! :D
and then you have to (rapidly) earn some precious ATP points in order to make it to the main draw of the US open...

MARCOS BAGHDATIS D. CONOR NILAND 4-6, 6-3, 6-2, 6-3
(3-1 for cyprus)
in the next round, cyprus will play finland or monaco (monaco leads 2-1 at the moment) in september, for a place in the group I.

about the story of the davis cup (single) winning streak, i have marcos between borg and becker (he tied and then passed becker during this tie), but maybe i'm missing some other players...
i know borg and becker have played many ties in the world group, unlike marcos, but that's still a big achievement ! :)
1. borg 33
2. baghdatis 23
3. becker 22
(obviously it helps to have a name starting with B...)
marcos is now scheduled play indianapolis and los angeles... time to earn ATP points !

In most peoples eyes Reyes is questionable.....maybe he will get them on the same stuff Agassi was on.......I guess you can call this keeping up with the Nadal's!

KL + pekin !

WC in kuala lumpur and beijing for marcos. :)

"Wild cards are provided at the Tournament Director's discretion and I am delighted to say that former Australian Open finalist Marcos Baghdatis, always a crowd favourite, along with Taylor Dent will receive singles Wild Cards into the main draw of the Proton Malaysian Open, Kuala Lumpur 2009."

Baghdatis was a finalist at the 2006 Australian Open and reached a career high ranking of eight that year. He has also been a semi finalist at Wimbledon and has enjoyed career wins over Andy Roddick, Lleyton Hewitt, Nikolay Davydenko, Tommy Robredo and David Nalbandian.

Baghdatis has struggled with various injuries that have included a stress fracture in his right wrist as well as back problems. The 24 year old is now fit and recently said he is determined to make a full return to the tour and his aim is to work his way back into the top ten and strive to be number one. He has already won two ATP Challenger events this year.

"I want to thank the Tournament Director for this opportunity and I look forward to coming to Kuala Lumpur, a place I know is famous for food, warm people like in my home country and of course the famous towers, which I look forward to seeing each morning from my hotel room at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel," Baghdatis said.

Marcos will contest the China Open in Beijing after being awarded a wild card into the ATP World Tour 500 tennis tournament.

Marcos has great memories of the tournament in Beijing, having captured his first ATP World Tour title there in 2006 with victory over Mario Ancic in the final. On his second and most recent visit in 2007 he reached the quarter-finals, losing out to Ivan Ljubicic in a third-set tie-break.

This year the event will be played at the Beijing Olympic Green Tennis Center, which was purpose-built for the 2008 Olympic Games. In the 10-court venue there are three main courts built to represent lotus flowers – an emblem of the Beijing Olympics.

It is a star-studded field in the Chinese capital this year with World No. 2 Rafael Nadal, No. 4 Novak Djokovic, defending champion/No. 6 Andy Roddick, No. 8 Nikolay Davydenko and No. 9 Fernando Gonzalez all set to appear. Former World No. 1 and two-time Grand Slam champion Marat Safin has also received a wild card.

I sure hope Marcos can find his groove next year. He's still pretty "young". I also hope Amelie M can as well (I still think she should move into doubles play)

it really disappointed me when he essentially dropped out of contention. i will be following him more now that i know he's working on finding a way back.
