"Mardy Fish makes a welcome return to action this week in Atlanta. The American is competing in just his second ATP World Tour event since the 2012 US Open, having battled illness concerns for the past 10 months. The American is making his return on a happy hunting ground, having lifted the Atlanta trophy in 2010 and 2011, defeating John Isner both times. He has a 9-1 event record and is seeded sixth."

Not sure why Fish hasn't retired yet. I assume he's getting decent medical advice, but there doesn't seem to be much point to his campaign to remain active. He's old enough to have retired by now even if he weren't ill. If he had a shoulder injury or the like, I could understand an attitude that, "Well, if I keep battling through this for another six to eight months, I might be able to get back into the top 20, and then spend another couple of years as a productive journeyman." But with a heart problem? Is it worth fighting that to play just two tournaments a year?

He's like an old salmon, it will be an uphill battle for him from now on.

Hope he doesn't get fried on court in the hot afternoon sun

i think he should ask for evening or late afternoon matches when the shadows have come over, hopefully.

maybe he likes to play tennis and compete? He's rich and probably bored just staying home all day. It's not like he has a second job or other things to fill up his time. Maybe this is what he enjoys doing. Guys like Hewitt and Haas have more than enough money to retire on. They just love being out there and competing.

My point is that Fish is not the same as Hewitt and Haas because he has a serious health problem. When you play a tournament, then take six months off because of your heart, then play another tournament, then take another six months off because of your heart, it's a lot harder to justify staying on tour just for the "fun" of it.

You peeps seen his wife? Another reason why I think Mardy just plays as he loves tennis and it's competitive nature.

Mardy probably knows the seriousness of his health condition a little better than you and wouldn't be out there unless the risk was minimal.

He was top 10 when he had to take his health break and he has the game to win BIG matches.

I wish him the best of luck hope to see him on TV soon.

Certainly correct.

and wouldn't be out there unless the risk was minimal.

We have no way of knowing that, and based on the tendency of top athletes to resist career-ending medical advice as long as possible, I'd say there's a decent chance that it's not correct. Remember that Fish has taken medical breaks, not just one such break. Maybe there was "minimal" risk at Indian Wells too, but odd that he didn't play again after that, until now, except for a Challenger event (in which he lasted one round).

salmon like to swim upstream soooooooo..............

lets make mr fish play uphill on a tilted tennis court.

oh yeah, lets do it maan.
