NEW YORK (AP) — Former top-10 player Mardy Fish says the U.S. Open will be the last tennis tournament of his career.

The 33-year-old American has played just one competitive match since August 2013 as he’s dealt with anxiety issues. The U.S. Tennis Association said Wednesday that Fish was using a protected ranking to gain entry to the singles field for the year’s last Grand Slam event.

Fish tweeted: “I will finish my career at the US Open.”

He says he’ll play tournaments in Atlanta and Cincinnati before that.

Fish had announced last month that he would play doubles with retired pal Andy Roddick in Atlanta along with making his singles comeback there.

Fish’s health problems began in March 2012 when his heart started racing uncontrollably the night after he lost a match at Key Biscayne, Florida.

Congrats to him on a great career. 2011 was a nice year.

PS. I loved those Athens 04 head wreaths.

Shame, he reached his peak in 2011 and played great tennis and then quickly had health issues afterwards. Happy trails Mardy!

Excuse the pun but Mardy has shown heart to fight back against his anxiety issues when it comes to playing Tennis.

Always sad to see yet another familiar face leave the tennis scene although this one has been in the pipeline for a couple of years now.

Mardy was always a presence, especially on the North American hardcourts. He will be missed!

He could still be a top or even the best dubbs player. Hard to believe he couldn't beat the BB's.

His heart condition ruined his career.

A sad story considering he just reached his peak when it happened.

Sad news, it's not even like he's that old. I wish him all the best in his retirement.
Considering his playing style I don't think he's too old either..

Even just going by age he's still young enough to compete at the top of the game. Top 20 wouldn't be impossible.

Was Mardy Fish the one who also had depression? I remember a player that suddenly got very daunted by playing tennis and all the fame and he stepped away from the game for a while to deal with his personal problems. Who was that?

Heart condition? If it's a heart condition, why is he still playing tennis? We really have no idea what the condition is. Good luck to Mardy, but we don't know what's really happened.

Yes, we do know. In 2014 he had cardiac catheter ablation operation to correct misfiring electric pulses with his heart.
However, he has missed most of the last 2+ years due to an anxiety disorder.
