maria goes to #1?

I think Maria will be #1 during the clay court season. She wont do that well on clay, but better than last year, and Davenport wont defend her signficant clay court title of last year. Mauresmo certainly wont defend all her points from last year, though she might do better than both Maria and Lindsay on clay. Last year Lindsay did significantly better, this year it will be the same on clay as Maria; Amelie did enormously superior, this year she will do better but not by the same margin. The point will come out for her to be #1. It would be good if she did it before Wimbledon, so she didnt have the pressure to defend to have any shot of being #1.

She might get it for a few weeks in the dead middle of clay season, but that's it. After Amelia Island, Lindsay has nothing big to defend until the Wimbledon semis, which carried low quality points. Mauresmo will be out of the race once clay season begins, and Maria will lose the #1 ranking, if she even gets it, very quickly. Once grass season hits, it's over. Lindsay should then have it through at least Los Angeles, possibly longer.

Actually you are right. Maria took a generous draw to the French Open quarters last year, while Lindsay lost 4th round. Maria must get it around Amelia Island or she probably wont at all.

maria has year to date rankings #1 as of today. and maria trains in spain. don't count her out on the clay. i don't see lindsey doing well in europe. and its maria whose 17 not lindsey.

She would have to make some serious renovations to her game to do well on clay.
Right now she is a mad-basher. She has super power on all her shots, except the volley, but nothing else. She doesnt even move that well, pretty ok movement, but that is all. She also has great mental strength, although slightly diminished in my mind, for the slight revealed trouble of closing out matches while ahead, but still overall very high in the mental aspect. That is all her game is oriented around though. Lack of variety, strategy, direction, placements, feel, spins. Plus she cant volley.

remember were talking about the women, not the men. mad basher serena won the french a while back. marias precision groundies run her opponents not herself. clijsters is no doubt the favorite, at the french, right now. but, maria shouldn't lose much ground to lindsey there.

Anything Maria does, Lindsay does better. Lindsay hits harder, gets better angles, serves better, volleys better. Only questionable would be movement. And Lindsay's has greatly improved, and Maria's is nothing special.

Serena is much faster than Maria. Serena also is much better at the net.

andrew-were u a special child?

funny. at 17 maria is 2-1 against lindsey lifetime and 2-1 agatnst serena over the last year or 2. why would that be? lindsey does bomb in slam finals better.

Last meeting: DAVENPORT (USA) def. Sharapova 6-0 6-0. That was the worse loss ever suffered by a world number three. Ever.

Maria is so good.

Ranking aside, Cljisters seems to be No. 1 in the last 4 weeks. When Cljisters and JHH are completely back, they will give Sharapova more trouble than anyone else in top 10 right now. She likes to hit with the likes of Davenport, Williams, but she has always had trouble with someone who changes pace and spin. It was quite obvious in the final yesterday. Cljisters and JHH plays different style of tennis.

i think the blustery conditions gave maria a lot of trouble against kim. and kim is 100% back. jhh wont be back for awhile. unlike kim, she wasn't able to practice while out. maria had little trouble with jhh. maria looked llike she twisted her back in the second set, otherwise the match wasnt close against jhh.

I guess you are a fan of Sharapova, to find excuse for her when she isn't playing well. In windy condition, power hitter usually does better than other style since they can hit through the wind easier. How can you say that match wasn't close against JHH - it went to three sets? JHH was tired in the third set since she hasn't played much, otherwise it would be very close. JHH is playing at high level already for her first tournament back.

The belgians will be very tough.

wind is simply a wildcard, an eqaulizer. theres a lot more to playing in the wind than power hitting. maria made more errors in 3 games against kim than entire match against venus. maria's 6-0 6-0 debacle was also in windy conditions. i'm sure kim has more experience in the wind. and maria goes for lines, so i dont think her game is well suited for the wind. jhh's form is miles away from her old form, by her own admission. maria also called for the trainer at the end of the second set against jhh. and i'm just a fan of good tennis.

regardless, time will tell.

I'm very happy to see the women on top in the rankings now have some class and sportmanship. Maria, Lindsey, Kim, all know how to handle their losses. When they lose, they actually can acknowledge that their opponents outplayed them, not that they were tired, injured or some other lame excuse. Do you think the Williams will ever get past their obvious poor upbringing?
