I don't think Tomic has the firepower to trouble Cilic.. but if Tomic keeps his slice low and down, it may help him a little because Cilic is soo tall!

Wow is it just me or is Tomic hitting the ball with so little pace?

On a side note: Where is Dimitrov?

Unfortunately, Dimitrov did not qualify. I hope he doesn't become like DY with all the "next Federer" hype around him.
he's still very young.LOOOOOONG way to go until he reaches DY status. Also DY's mockery also came from all those wasted WCs he received.Dimitrov unfortunately can't benefit from such, him coming from Bulgaria.Unless of course Kazakhstan takes notice and buys him.

Yup, there should be no panic around Dimitrov not suddenly breaking through. He's still at the top end of his generation and shifting up the rankings gradually.

Tomic's movement is pretty poor huh

That would be horrible. There's no need for another Bulgarian player being bought off. They've already lost one with Karatancheva. He's the Bulgarian hope.

I find Tomic's forehand strange to watch at times :s but i can't quite put my finger on what it is, i'm sure he hits alot harder than me but it seems as tho he 'pushes' it sometimes, that might be because if the short backswing? :S

I'm just comparing him with Tomic. He's 1 year younger, yet he's on the second round of the Aussie Open. Dimitrov could not even qualify. :(

so what?I am not sure Federer was able to qualify in slams at his age either.:)

also Tomic was great to come so far.Let's see what the future holds.

Isn't he a follower of Oscar Wegners technique on the forehand where you "find the ball" before accelerating, it's why it looks so disjointed. The theory is that it'll correct itself and look more fluid later.

You'll see the word pusher bandied around with Tomic a lot I think, though he can generate pace with his sort of slapped fh

lost to kendrick in the first round of qualifying
That's a shame :-(

Well, he's still young so no worries.

Tomic's a pretty decent player. He'll get better as he matures. Interesting game...

2-3 down a break

He's got a nice transition game as well... knows when to approach the net

That's a bit of a mean comparison though =p

Tomic got a wildcard into the event and then played Rufin in the first round. Rufin being another new pro, who's best surface is clay, and who was playing his first HC slam. He's also ranked a fair way behind Kendrick (who dimitrov lost to in the qualies).

Good point. I hope Grigor can make an impression in the Slams this year.

Not forgetting that Kendrick is also an alright player-and not just because of his 5 setter against Nadal at wimbledon a few years ago.

His paceless shots are so annoying to watch though.

Aye, Robby is a very capable player (I just went for the ranking mention since it seemed less subjective, and more concise).

Anyway back to the match hehe, Cilic is sadly making this competitive. If he'd stop missing the set would have been over by now >_<

ESPN in their infinite wisdom is currently showing a taped replay of the Roddick-Bellucci match that ended like 6 hours ago instead of showing the live Cilic-Tomic match! :-?

I really wanted to see this kid Tomic play too since I've never seen him play but have heard a lot about him. :(

Wow, Cilic must not fall for Tomic baiting him into playing his style.
Tomic's going to be a force to be reckoned with in a couple years. He's a natural ball striker and does everything really well. He's also developed a nice defensive game at such an early age.

This is possibly it, definitely looks a bit disjointed. I have to say that's a really crap theory of Wegner's also

Tomic will be a force very soon, great potential but as his current match He is likely going to lose in straight or in four with a tight set.

I dunno, if Cilic weren't missing all these damn forehands it'd be in the 2nd set right now. I don't see him as anything special. He's got a Murray type game but not Murray movement. And if he grows any taller then this style just isn't gonna work for him.

He's going toe to toe with Cilic and is even outhitting him on points. He can mix up the pace nicely as well. He's going from deep loopy forehands... to hard flat FH's with nice angles.

I think he's confusing Cilic

Bulgarian commentator made a good point about popular players being put on Rod Laver because they attract crowds, even though their matches are mostly pre determined,

yes I just opened the stream and now i am watching this match but its just the start , likely Cilic will be up a gear in the last sets at least He should on papers.

I'm really impressed so far :)

Wowee... really amazing play from the 17 YO Tomic

5-4... what a beautiful slice BH!

I wonder where Tomic is ranked in 2 years...
If this is how he normally plays... I predict within the top 100

5-5

He plays alot like Steffi Graf did when she bust on to the scene in the mid to late 80's. Goes from TS BH to deep slice... back to TS, etc.

Very interesting player

My lordee... this is just amazing play from a 17 YO!

6-5 Tomic

He has a better slice BH than any other male player, IMO. He switches flawlessly from TS to slice then back.

It's starting to rain :(
