Interviewed by Der Bund, the 25-time Grand Slam champion had something strong to say about the 24-year-old "bad boy".

'He should go to work in a factory. Then he would see how it can be. I am happy when I see one like Frances Tiafoe, who played against Roger. I know his story, got to know him at the World Team Tennis at the Washington Kastles,' Hingis said.

'He grew up in the tennis club, where his father worked, wanted to play. It is fun to watch one who has so much pleasure in this sport.'

She retired at age 23 the first time... and then her comeback ended due to testing positive to coccaine

She sounds like she's grown up a lot since then. Tomic needs that type of maturing as well, because she's right.

I'm impressed by Hingis. A great singles player, but the singles game passed her by when power players took over. So she reinvented herself as one of the great doubles players of all time. It's a great story.

Hingis' first husband also called her a serial cheater, so 'first stone' applies.

What does your personal life have to do with being hardworking and professional at your job? Which Hingis is, and Tomic isn't.

And Tiafoe will make it too, I am sure.

She's being a tad naive here. Tomic couldn't possibly go to work in a factory. They don't pay enough for him to afford $50,000 parties! ;)

She is making a personal attack on him. And she is talking about something that is not her business.

Two can play at that game, so I wouldn't advise her to go down that route.

Of course the problem is he would have had to have worked a ham & egger job in his teens to appreciate what he has. Doing it now would be pointless, especially as he has millions in the bank &it would stop somebody who actually needs the money doing it. The real tragedy is being born a man & even worse an average looking man means his earning potential from modelling/sponsorships is limited-a decade or more on the tour & Bouchard has now surpassed him on career earnings alone & no doubt has made a hell of a lot more on her shilling roles for Colgate etc.

It's not a personal attack. Tomic is a public figure that represents their sport. She has every right to publically comment on his attitude and behavior as it pertains to the sport.

Thankfully he doesn't represent the sport-if you asked the average person to name tennis players you would get Fed, Nadal, Novak, Murray, Williams Sisters & Sharapova. You might get the likes of Mugu & Stan. Nobody really knows this dweeb outside of real tennis fans & nobody thinks he is doing it for anything other than money & because of his upbringing. As for the comment she would be wiser to say if he says he only does it for the money then why when he doesn't need money if he as he claims have 10 million in the bank doesn't he just retire? Why would somebody worth millions work a 9-5 job?

Just sayin' what? The first time she stopped enjoying tennis, so she stopped playing it. I'm sure she could have carried on showing up to tournaments and collecting first round prize money. She's got more right than most to call him out, because she's been there.

    Tomic could sensibly reply -

"I already have a job, it pays better than a factory job and they can't fire me

"Like a lot of people, I don't like my job and don't give it a 100% or respect it"

I'm impressed by her too - always was

    But this isn't the story

She was always a great doubles player, she won Wimby at 15 years old!

it seems to me she copped out from playing singles

She's clearly been physically fit enough to play singles for many a year... I can only assume she hasn't because she doesn't think she'd do too well

Put it another way: If she felt she could win majors in singles or be a top 5 er, she would be playing

    ---

I personally don't have a problem with her choice... but yes, if we see her as a singles cop out rather than in the terms you suggested (transforming into a great doubles player and putting her full focus there)... I can see where some would say it weakens her moral position to be giving Tomic unsolicited advice

Everything she said is absolutely correct but I wish it came from someone who didn't retire from tennis at 23 and has had a cocaine problem.

She is a Hall of Famer but she was also a coward. She couldn't handle the fact that the Williams sisters and Henin were better than her and quit. She easily could have won more slams even with those players still going at it, heck I bet if she played singles today she could probably make the top 20.

Martina is going out of her way to say something like this.

I get it, everybody is pissed at Tomic at the moment, but tennis has a lot more serious problems and almost noone is focusing on them.

From money distribution through problems with imposing the rules of the game to the lurking doping problem.

Tomic is behaving like an entitled brat, but his actions hurt mostly himself.

Guess I can't. LJust stories of her partying days and such.

Worked with some guys that grew up in Spanish juniors that have told me stories of Verdasco and Feli. Also grew up with Rafa but nothing juicy. He's actually a good nice boy. One of the stories about Feli and Dasco was them going to the club and everyone in the hallway moving out of the way like Kings were making way. They go to the exclusive parts of the club and simultaneously take shots of orange juice while using the hands and tongues of 3+ each on them. Thought they were BS'ing until we went to Miami Open and went to each player's practice court and they called Feli, Nando, and Rafa by their nicknames from Spain and they looked up and laughed and walked over to shoot the ****.

Also have heard some legendary things about Genie. But this is a thread about Hingis so nvm.

He probably still wouldn't be successful, even at this stupid profession. They would call him and ask him to star in a 20 million dollar big budget movie and he would probably still say no.

When they ask why he doesn't want to do it he'd probably laugh and say "Would you do it if you were 23 and worth 10 million?" This guy drives me crazy with his garbage.

Nothing to see here. Hingis, tries to stay relevant.....portrays herself as an elder statesperson with a past.
She is learning from Cashy, Wilander, Boris, and Mac.

Back when Hingis toured the factory manufacturing her clothing line, toNic, she had tremendous work ethic, and appreciation for the work. Then she never toured it again.

Poor Tomic will have to learn Chinese if he wants to work in a factory and that would require a lot of work by itself.

Anyone remember when she had a huge, high profile deal with sergio tacchini? And she got plantar fasciitis? So she sued sergio tacchini? She did not just get out of the contract, or ask for custom shoes. Or a tape jobbed shoe from another brand. She sued the company.

    Well......
So convenient, lazy and easy to attack Bernard Tomic.
With Frances Tiafoe...What is there to defend? That he come from a blue collar background?

If she wanted to be novel, she would help Bernie.
And expose the tiafoe false dawn.
    Kidding.
    Allez Frances!
And as for Bernie...a hardhat, a lunchpail and a berlitz course in the language of the factory.

Tomic is also from a working class back ground btw, he's not some sheltered prep school kid.

Tomic basically never had a real childhood, he's pretty much been a full time touring pro since he was 12

He's probably had far tougher days developing his game under his maniac father when he was a child than most people have had in their lives

No idea why she brought tiafoe into this conversation. tomic isn't some rich kid like Gulbis who doesn't need the prize money to play tennis. Lets be honest here even if tomic started "trying" at best he would get maybe 4th round in the majors? maybe in the quarters if he got a lucky draw. He isn't that good. The guy has found a base level where he can make money on the atp while playing at 50-75% of his so called talent. I don't bother watching his matches but telling the guy to go work at some factory is idiotic.
