MASTERS CUP: DOWN TO THE LAST TWO
There are two spots left for this year's Tennis Masters Cup in Shanghai. Juan Martin Del Potro (7th) and Gilles Simon (8th) are currently in pole position but they cannot win any more points. To overtake them, James Blake and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga need to make the final while David Nalbandian will have to go all the way and win the tournament.

The commentators said it was Tsonga's win over Roddick that meant Simon could no longer make it.

Don't you just love this time of the season? :)

I'm not suggesting any reasons why Federer withdrew, but I think he would rather see Blake or Tsonga at the Master's Cup than Simon. Most people find the former two more exciting players, Federer respects Blake's classy attitude, and they both are much more guaranteed victories for Federer than Simon will be.

I really hope Tsonga gets past Blake, I'd like to see him in the Master's Cup to make things interesting. He really impressed me today with being able to win "ugly"; up until today I was convinced that he was one of those guys who has to rely on playing his very best to win.

Damn you Roger giving you the overhyped Blake a shot at the Masters Cup, and taking away Simon's well earned spot. I hope Tsonga owns Blake tommorow.

I do think he will have problems in the future with winning many matches because his game is so based on his own strength. If he has a good day, he can beat anyone but if he isn't on, I think he will become a Safin II. The match you talk about may be a bit of a fluke as he was struggling even to hold service throughout large parts of it.

I guess you don't like Simon. Me neither, just a retriever, nothing special.

I don't really have a strong opinion of him, he seems nice enough but yeah.. his game isn't particularly exciting.

What I was getting at was the fact the French were all going crazy for Tsonga, yet his win resulted in Simon, another home favourite, being eliminated from the race!

They won't be happy if Tsonga knocked Simon out but doesn't take his chance.

Tsonga is indeed another breed of player than Simon. It is interesting to see how the French approach has created very different playing styles: Gasquet, Monfils, Tsonga, Simon,...

To me the only one of those guys who has a truly different 'style' is Simon.

The other three...I mean what I see from them, this "French approach" is mostly just see-ball, hit-ball with some subtle differences between what "hit-ball" means. In other words, I'd argue that Gasquet, Monfils and Tsonga are not at all playing "very different" styles; rather they're all playing the exact same style, that style being "try to execute the flashiest tennis you're capable of". They just have different interpretations of that style.

Bummer. I was hoping Simon would get in. I love watching him play. At times he looks like he isn't doing very much, and then he explodes. Hopefully next year he'll do it via direct entry!

Since DelPotro, Nadal and Nalbandian all talked about possibility of skipping the TMC, Simon could still make it.

Then you have Mahut and Llodra who are completely different than any of above as well.

It's a shame. Simon has proven himself many times this year, and being one of only 3 players to beat the top 3 this year. Two of those wins against the top 3 were in MS series as well. He had a great hardcourt stretch, and shocked everyone.

Everyone says he's a pusher, but you could see he can packing the power, just doesn't always wanna use it. He gives the little guys a chance (what is he like 143 lbs!!!), and he obviously sets up points well.

It's also sad that Del Potro might pull out. Hopefully both can make it next year.

I like Blake, both as a person and a player, but it's no doubt that he doesn't deserve his spot this year compared to Simon.

although his year wasn't anything spectacular, i'm impressed that blake can get into the TMC.

if del potro pulls out, who will replace him? simon?

Why does everyone assumes that Federer lied about being injured, does everybody thinks he' s that manipulative and dishonest?

Everyone? No,rather a couple of posters here who always question anything Fed does or says anyway.Given the fact that this is the ONLY time in his whole career he gave another player a walkover and given that he's one of the few players who never retired from a match I think most people believe him and think he's sincere about having a legitimate reason to pull out from Paris.

It's funny that he's facing so much criticism in this forum for giving a walkover ONCE in his whole career, should those harsh standards be applied to every player?

Well, I'd say Monfils, a power server with a rather counterpunching baseline game; Gasquet, an all courter with off course a marvellous backhand; and Tsonga, an almost SV very attacking player have considerably different tactics not to mention technique. Llodra and Mahut, are virtually the only people on tour who consistently serve and volley. Santoro and Simon are tireless retrievers with tricks in their hat.

French tennis seems creative in bringing different styles on tour.

So if it's a Nalbandian Tsonga final, they both are guaranteed a spot in the final 8, regardless of who wins the title?
