Masters Cup played on a different surface every year would be fair

Masters Cup is the final event of the year played by the top 8 players of the year. The top 8 is determined by tournaments played on hardcourts, clay and a few on grass. Also, any Grand Slam winner during the year is automatically qualified for Masters Cup. So if the Masters Cup is supposed to be the final and global event of the year, the atp shouldn´t ignore how many tournaments on the tour are played on clay and grass.
The Masters Cup has been the Hardcourts Masters Cup.
I think a surface alternance based on a 3 years cycle would be fair: one year on hardcourts, one year on clay, one year on grass. Then the Masters Cup would represent the variety of surfaces on the tour.

I think the masters should be played on ice or some other neutral surface no one plays on, like hardwood or something new maybe.

Otherwise, this hardcourt stuff is fine.

maybe they should make an artificial grass court built on top of a hard court, and in the little areas between the artificial blades, fill it with red clay...oh also inside the service boxes instead of hardcourt it should be hardwood floor

now whoever won on that would be the real champion..:)

just kidding..it is an interesting point, but then many people would have something to say about how it was not a fair tournament because it was played on grass and that only makes good for federer and roddick, or if it was on a clay court its all for nadal...

most of the year is played on hardcourt, i think thats just the easiest to maintain in an indoor court, and the final tournament of the year...

also since the tournaments after the us open ,which is already a fast surface, are all indoors really, and all similar court speed to the us open...so like you cant just slow it down to clay....

The carpet is in between the hardcore and slow clay court.
it is not as fast as US open courts.

Why not this: grass court growing on clay? LOL.

It's played on the surface that is most consistent with the end of the season so that the players don't kvetch too much about having to adjust to yet another surface in a short time frame.

That´s right but if they play the Davis Cup final on clay or grass they adjust to the surface training the week before so it wouldn´t be a big deal to do the same in the Masters Cup.

Davis Cup isn't the top 8 players in the world, and the whole point of being the home team is picking a surface to your advantage. The two events cannot be compared (and yes, players routinely kvetch about playing Davis Cup because of the surface changes).

You just gave me a neat idea....

What if we made half of the court clay, and the other half grass.....

Jeez, I'm building a court like that, should be intresting.

carpet for the masters !!!

- this is the 5th biggest event of the year, the 4 others are played on grass, clay and hardcourt (all outdoor).
- we have fewer and fewer events played on indoor carpet.

so this would be fair to play this big tournament on that surface, like it often was played in the past. :)

viva la moquette !!! :p

It used to be like that in the late 60's and early 70's until it was moved to MSG in NY city, personally I think they should have stayed at MSG and stuck with the singles markings, cos to be honest who gives a rats tail about doubles? they exist out of charity.

this is not exactly what you said :p but this is kinda clay on synthetic grass... ;)

In reality the surface comprises a combination of synthetic grass fibers and graded mineral infill which has been dyed and furnace fired to produce the perfect French Clay colour and play characteristics with none of the maintenance problems generally experienced with a real clay court.

Then it's not fair to carpet. :)

Indoor carpet season used to be bigger. If Masters is not using carpet,
the carpet season is practically gone, considering many top players
skipping Paris Indoor.

I think they should rotate the surface. If they can put down an indoor hard court, then a clay court should be just as easy. If Australia would get the Masters, it's summer there and grass shouldn't be a problem. Grass, for a week long event, shouldn't be a problem anywhere.

Isn't masters on a carpet ? Not directly hard court ?
From TV, it "sounded" like some kind of carpet.
It definetely sounded different from indoor hard court of Madrid....

Eh.. choice of parquet, marble, futsal court, something like that.

Another thing would be the previous year's winner. He would have to defend his points, but he may be considerably weaker on a different surface. In my opinion, that would be unfair.

I think it should stay carpet, even though I've never been a big fan of it. The main reason that I think it should stay carpet, is because the other 4 surfaces each have a slam event attached to it. So the 5th surface of carpet should get something, since the slams have already been accounted for.

Why don't they draw the courts to play on too?

we are dealing with masters no?

To make a draw for the Round robin session?
Let's say hard is drawn so they all will play on hard then

when it's over make another draw for quarters so if carpet is drawn they will all play on carpet :)

then in the semis the same thing .... if clay is drawn they will all play on it

if clay is drawn again for the final so it will be played on clay

that will be so exciting !

the one that comes out of it is the master of masters:)
