is the S for wawrinka a special exempt (as he is playing the final at vienna) ?
i thought it was only possible if the tournament you're still playing is (at least) in the same category as the tournament of which you wanted to play the qualifications...

Looks like it will be a doozy. Karlovic vs. Safin, really looking forward to that one. Canas won't be able to run like he does on the other courts, so even he gets back on roll like he was on earlier this year, I don't think he will be much trouble for Fed.

Why is that NoDjoke has been on Nadal's side of the draw in most of the big tournaments? Is the third seed always on the second seed's half of the draw?
Man, I can't wait until Monday.

I might regret this later, but it looks like Federer will defend his title. All the young guns are on the other half of the draw, and I'll wait to see how Nadal's knee is holding up to make any predictions. He has Berdych in there, but one or the other might not even make it to the semis. I'd hate to see the kid go down early in his home tournament, and I don't expect any explosions between the two this time around.

That is a very technical question. I think they had 4 wildcards to give so they only gave 3 (Lopez,Del Potro,Montanes) and saved 1 spot for some player who could reach the final or semifinal this week and wasn´t able to play the qualies (I think that´s what they call "special exemption"). I don´t know the rules but I think that´s what they did.

ok so in fact they created a kinda WSE (wild special exempt), that's it ? ;)

I kind of skimmed the above so apologies if I missed it but what is the court surface and how fast/slow does it play?

No it's within the rules.

The rulebook says:

"A qualified Event for special exempt to a ATP Masters Series Tournament is the singles
event of another ATP Masters Series or International Series Gold Tournament."

Since Vienna is a ISG tournament and Wawrinka couldn't play the qualies for Madrid because of his deep run there, he's automatically granted a SE.

It´s played on greenset like many other tournaments but the height of Madrid makes it faster and the ball flies. These are probably the fastest conditions of all the Masters Series.

novak djokovic still suffers from his back injury, and obviously his serve not at his best in vienna. a lil hard for him to gain the victory. but my vote still goes to him

I wish Gasquet all the best, but my vote is with Federer in this one.

Gasquet has beaten Blake before, in straight sets in Montreal last year, so I hope he can make the semis. Anything after that will be a bonus. I'd like to see him do well enough to make it into the final eight for Shanghai. Moving deeper into the draw than Blake will be a key for that to happen.

He's got a really tough draw. He could face Matheiu in the second round. He'll probably have to beat:

Matheiu
Blake
Djokovic
Nadal/Berdych
Federer

He's probably got the toughest draw in the tournament out of all the ranked players. He has the ability to compete with anyone including Federer, we'll just have to see what he brings.

Appreciate it, have to favor Fed over Nadal but this may give some big server a hope too.

I would love to see Federer lay the smackdown on Canas, but Canas will probably lose to the winner of Calleri-Tursunov anyway. Either of those guys can just hit him off the court.

Baghdatis has a shot vs Nadal if Nadal is still not fully fit.

Ferrer could do well here with his draw.

Paris is faster. Probably the fastest court of the tour, along with Zagreb Indoors and Lyon ;)

The surface in Madrid is actually quite slow, I understand a good amount of sand is added. The ball, however, does indeed fly through the air very quickly (because of the elevation). So it's tricky conditions... the ball is flying, but it "checks up" a lot on the gritty surface.

Always a good idea for players to arrive in Madrid early to get used to it.

ah ok... so it's because of the gold ! ;)

i checked the rulebook... and if nobody can get the SE, what they do with the remaining spot is not so obvious !
it seems to go to the next player on the direct acceptance list (who withdraws from the qualifiying draw) or it's replaced by a WC (the myserious 4th WC zaragoza was talking about ?) given to an "almost special exempt" player (!)... depending on the time he plays his last match at the previous event !

Gasquetrules

Semi-Pro
Gasquet's draw

I glanced at the draw briefly and saw that it looked fairly tough, but didn't realize just how tough it will probably be for him to make it just to the semis.

Still, all these guys can play and are dangerous. Again, I just hope that Gasquet can beat Blake if they win their early round matches... or that Gasquet progresses a round or two further than Blake.

There are really only about two spots that are still up for grabs in the final eight for Shanghai. One is now held by Blake. Gasquet is very close at #10, but so are several other players just below him. The important thing for Gasquet is to pick up more points in Madrid than Blake does. If there is indeed some bite to the court, and especially if the balls sit up, I think Blake's run will be short. He may not make it to play Gasquet, and if he does a slower surface will be to Gasquet's advantage.

Although Gasquet plays well on fast surfaces, he can also play well on slower surfaces, too. In fact, a medium-slow hardcourt is ideal for his game. Blake is dangerous only on faster surfaces. A run to the quarters or semis is probably Gasquet's goal in Madrid. With Fed's easy draw, he should win it if he is in decent form.

With TTC showing practically every match, is it worth it to buy the Masters series. TV thru the website ?

Gulbis tanking in the Qualies has clearly opened the doors for others to win this title.

Djokovic should win this event without dropping a set ,If he doesn't then Nadal definitely would .These two are the clear favorites now !!

Other contenders would be Murray,Safin,Gasquet, Ferrer,Berdych,Stepanek,Monaco ,Ljubicic or Canas(if he can beat either Ljubicic or Ferrer in the Quarters after schooling federer as usual then he definitely has a chance)

For while, I thought Federer had withrawn or this was the fantasy tennis section, but I guess I was wrong.

Good luck to all the players, the ones that knows how to win. ;)

I was impressed with Murray today. He has definitely recovered from his injury. He hitted some great returns and was in control of the match from the baseline. He will be a really dangerous opponent for Nadal if they meet in 3rd round.

Do you know if Spanish tennis has made this surface a high bouncing slow Carpet like Rafa likes ?

Does anyone have a livestream for this tournament? Could you please post it if you have one? The one on channelsurfing isn't working for me.

The court looks quite slow to me from TV, but you can't judge it enough when you're not actually there to see it live. It's definitely not as fast as the USO. Looks similar to Vienna last week, in terms of speed and Vienna is probably one of the slowest indoor courts.
They want to speed it up about 20% next year, though (in Vienna that is).

Pics is on fire right, who cares about the surface!!

i'd rather see Ferrer-Federer over anyone other than Djokovic-Federer right now. Who wouldn't!?!?!

I just posted this in a diff thread...

Madrid Masters is being broadcast live on The Tennis Channel here in the US.

The indoor carpet seems wicked fast and Pavel & Baghdatis are treating everyone to some awesome tennis.

You have the usual stunning line-up of models doubling up as ball-girls; which poses a stupefying dilemma to the hardcore tennis fan: do I watch the amazing tennis on display or do I appreciate the beautiful female form in the background??? I have a love-hate relationship with the Madrid Masters...

-sigh-, what a predicament. Life is so tuff!

have TiVo running and focus on the match, but when you glimpse what look like potentially great shots of the ballgirls, sprint to the nearest rewind button

I believe the surface is not technically a carpet. It's just a hard court. Wouldn't shock me if the organizers added more grit in an effort to slow it down to benefit Rafa.

That's funny because during the Murray vs Stepanek match it didn't look that fast to me. Certainly not wicked...and it's not carpet.

Allez Bagy! Baghdatis vs. Pavel is tied at a set apiece. Are the matches as good as they look, and would it be worth it to get MS TV?

Baghdatis wins it in 3

i thought he'd win it in straights, I thought Pavel would pull it out if it went three. Good stuff from Bagman, and impressive that he actually pulled out a three-setter. Probably helps playing a 33-year-old.
