Relax, guys. I just meant it was the highest quality match in that tournament, much like the Nadal/Verdasco Semifinal was the true Final in the 2009 AO.
Everyone knows your agenda, dude. Don't bother trying to sound impartial. Just for future reference, when people here talk about 'true finals' they mean the match that won the tournament for the victor. An example would be the RG semifinal between Djokovic and Nadal. Everyone knew the winner of that match would go all the way, it was the true test, hence true final.

You can't use 'true final' when the player who won it didn't win the tournament. You can say best match of the tournament.

Fedal AO is by far the most overrated match in history.

Dimitrov Nadal it is.
"Match of the year" can mean different things. It doesn't say "best".

The final had a lot more ingredients to it, a more complex prospect in every way.

You could make a film about that final.

The film about the SF would be a turkey :D

I should have specified quality. In terms of importance and drama AO final is well ahead of the rest but it took a while for both players to really start clicking.

I don't follow Fed's matches like that tbh, I really didn't know. Nadal still looked gassed to me regardless. IW/Miami Fed smoked him though so it's not like I think it was a fluke, but I do think Nadal would have stayed ahead with more energy.
Ha! Ha! Admit it,You thought that Nadal was going to win based on the past and Nadal being up 3-1.

I do still have the Australian Open final on my virgin box. Watched it twice so that kind of explains it all. I don't normally go back and watch the full thing again. It was just a real good time, won money, the fifth set comeback etc. The only lame thing about it was the lag here. lolz Hell of a spectacle that holds its own against the greats like Hogan vs Andre.

Thought it was another breakthrough for Kyrgios against Federer.

No idea why you say Nadal was gassed in the 5th set. He played very well, saving all those BPs.
It's Federer who started swinging freely and everything went in.

Might be better quality matches this year but for the whole package this.
Yeah, this. You might say there were higher quality matches, but nothing beats when the final of a slam delivers in such dramatic fashion. It had its ups and down in level and both guys never found their best at the same time until the 5th, but calling any other match the "match of the year" is a huge misjudgement IMHO. It would be like saying the Wimbledon 2008 Final wasn't the match of 2008 when everybody knows it was and any other answer is just flat out stupid.

Fed fans can be so frantically fussy. What the f...?

The Dimitrov SF was the best match of the tournament by far, and the only reason Rafa didn't slay Fed in the final.

Nadal was being very lazy in some nuetral rallies he could have taken control of, hardly any pace on his shots, when I feel up to it i'll post timestamps. Prepare to agree :p

The AO final will be long be remembered as the match where Federer cemented himself as the one true 100% indisputable GOAT (even if Nadal wins 10 more dirtball championships). Went out there in his walker and took down the only opponent who ever troubled him.

Grigor and Rafa. I think most of the best stuff this year was first week/very early second week stuff between lower ranked guys.

It's not fussiness, it's just simple fact. You can't say it and expect anyone the slightest bit neutral to agree with you. I guess Djokovic won the true final in the 2015 French open because the Murray semifinal was tiring? Jog on.

I suppose Federer is lucky that he's so much younger than Nadal to have the energy to fight through so many five setters. Oh wait. He's not.

A lot more neutral than a hater like you would be. Keep telling us about how Dimi-Nadal was the real final despite the fact that Nadal got ravaged 5 straight games to end the match in the very next match against an old man with one leg.

I accept your apology. Even you can't have missed the fact that the only person here who agrees with your assessment that Nadal should have/deserved to/would have won the Australian Open is a guy whose user name is MichaelNadal.
And that guy is another absolute weapon. A strange type of hater. If it makes them feel better to say that a 30 year old Nadal was gassed more than the grandpa, then that's great. Whatever helps them sleep at night.

And did it in supreme fashion, taking the last 5 games of the match while playing some of the best tennis we've seen for quite a while. He was swinging freely in that final set and some of those backhands and half volleys were drool-worthy. Incredible match. Incredible mental strength by the old man, especially as his leg was bothering him at that point.

To come back in the 5th at his age, having 9layes two 5 setters in the previous rounds, and most importantly while having a damaged leg, was a display of sheer mental strength that rivals anything i've seen in tennis in a while.

I never said Nadal deserved to win or would have won the Final. I said he made a huge expenditure of effort in the SF, which was the real Final (and by this I don't mean nothing else than it was the best match of the tournament by a large margin).

Oh, Federer was injured in the Final? I am sorry, I didn't realize that.

No wonder u picked the final :p
It's not even bc Nadal won, bc you know with stuff like that, I'll always just admit the truth. It was a badass match, Nadal was slaying Grigor for a while, but in the 5th set it REALLY looked like he was going to lose.
I just have to ask...you use the word slay a lot. I've always taken it to mean 'crushing' or 'demolishing' or something similar. Am I wrong? Because the score in the Dimitrov semi was 6-3 5-7 7-6 6-7 before the final set.

Where was the slaying in that? Was it immediately following the first set? Because after that there was nothing to separate them, as far as I can recall.

Right, right, I must have misinterpreted your words when you said..

...as you saying that Nadal would have won the Final. I'm sure you can understand my confusion.

Nadal vs Dimitrov AO semifinal for best of 5, Djokovic vs Murray Doha final for best of 3. Didn't see a huge amount of women's matches but that Venus/Kvitova US Open quarterfinal really stands out as a high quality one, especially the 3rd set.

I disagree, Nadal was kinda gassed from the 5 setter with Zverev and then Dimitrov. The level of play was higher in the semi, and it was just as dramatic. The final meant more, understandably, and fits into a bigger narrative, but it wasn't a better match.
That final was the most frustrating match I've watched all year. I actually felt ill afterwards because I started watching it after staying up all night. Very stupid idea...

You're pretty much right, it was just the first match where I felt Nadal was walking around the court with a confident swagger between points and that stayed with me more than the score. Probably the best I've ever seen Grigor play, it was a crazy high quality match.

It really was, it was just too early in the Rafa comeback I think. Federer was oh-so ready and really had a plan for once. Nadal thought he could loop forehands.

I agree, but this is always the case when talking about the current Nadal on HC, especially when his opponent is on fire.

That is why I think he shouldn't be allowed to win HC titles at all.

you need a poll with some options - these 2 are def. candidates
Dimitrov vs Nadal Australian Open SF
Federer vs Nadal Australian Open Final
Mueller vs. Nadal, W 4. round

I remember a time, where you claimed to like Fedal equally well Gary. No fan who likes Fed just a tiny bit would find that match frustrating to watch
Nadal/Dimitrov AO SF
Federer/Kyrgios Miami SF
Federer/Nadal AO F
Del Potro/Thiem UO 4th
